Ikr, I mean, I don't like animes in general (I really don't, never watched one besides the old Pokemon when I was a little kid), but I gave Death Note a chance, and I didn't regret it.
There is something so depressing about this song; it just sounds so empty to me. Fits well with its title of L's Friends. This song is so underrated in my opinion- it only plays twice through the entire anime, and most death note viewers won't even remember this song, and to me, it's the most empty-feeling song in the OST, even more so than Solitude.
Death Note has a lot of depressing soundtracks. I actually think this one is more on the mild side, as I can see it as relaxing music as long as I don't think about L's death.
I agree. This soundtrack to me is like the epitome of isolation and alienation. It seems so artificial and out of touch with this world that makes me feel really weird and mesmerized.
I never thought someone else would understand it like this too. I one hundred percent agree. I just watched this series and I noticed when the music played. Indeed it's even more descriptive of loneliness than the Kodoku (loneliness) one, it's pure emptiness... I am glad something like this exists for when I am feeling completely down, and there are other people commenting on it so that I don't feel so crushed by this feeling. Cheers

I watched Deathnote pretty late, in 2015. I met my girlfriend at Uni that October, this music for me is very reminiscent of that time, because it was my part of my 'Study soundtrack' and I think of all the times we had together then. I think as John Doe said, it's nostalgia.

He was a LOT like Light in the sense that his brain worked like a machine more than a person. Even his persona in some cases was a cover designed to expose Light. But contrary to Light, L had a friend in Watari and his choice of life landed him on the right side of things, he wasn't cruel and cold and knew right from wrong. The only moment L deviates from his routine is on his last day. When he confronts Light rather directly about what they both know is going on and when Light lies to him even then, he understands that Light is a lot like him but has been corrupted by the power of the Death Note. I think he takes pity on him in that moment, understanding that Kira is to Light Yagami what L is to L Lawliet. A meaning and purpose. Staving off boredom is a recurring theme in the show. Even Ryuk, who is said to have been intelligent enough to have fooled the Shinigami King, is driven to throw a Death Note to the human world out of boredom. L eventually understands that the completely amoral Kira has taken over and sort of drives on trying to solve the case, knowing that he likely wouldn't be the one there to see Light finally accosted.

I'm always amazed at how excellent some Japanese writers are at creating deep characters with many layers to their personality, where so many other works of fiction create cardboards.

I can't get enough of Death Note's soundtrack. Both the orchestral arrangements by Yoshihisa Hirano and the incidental tracks by Hideki Taniuchi are so damn good. Some of the best-fitting music for any media franchise, period.
