a hammock CAN be hung just a few inches off of the ground (with you in it) . Debris can be kicked under the hammock to stop air flow if it's cold, A tarp can be tossed over a ridgelline and staked out, so as to enclose you and the hammock. Then you dont need a sleeping pad or sleeping bag, just a reflective tyvek bivy and its black plastic "envelope". You're off the cold, hard ground, out of the bugs, snakes, thorns, roots, stones, mud, snow, brush and seep slopes have no effect on you. A hammock CAN be hung as a "slingchair' and you sleep in the reclining position. Sedatives, sleep mask, earplugs, folks. Set up a sentry rotation and get your rest. If you dont, you wont be waf in a very short period of time. Exhaustion causes you to make mistakes, be slow, inaccurate with your rifle, careless. Can't have that crud.
Thank you, closely matches what I do already. I don't use bungees but a ridge line. I think I should give bungees a try. But a question- using a poncho only as a tarp does seem wastefull to me. The Army issues an actual tarp now that's a bit bigger. I just wanted to show this basic method. I'm also a tarp lover. Bungees are also great for high winds, as they absorb the dynamic forces. A static line will put all that force into your grommets, possibly ripping it.
