I used to ride that trail at least twenty times a year during the 1990's for about ten straight years. The sound of riding on the decompose granite is unlike anywhere else. From watching this video, some changes have occurred, but so much is the same. Thanks for sharing.
That would be an awesome memory…thanks for sharing! I am also trying to build these kinds of memories with my daughter! I rode Captain Ahab and Porcupine Rim with her last March.
I have a small bag full of square nails gathered while riding the Flume Trail in the 80’s. The sketchiest sections from then have been very much smoothed out.
@@ronsanderson99 It wasn’t a railway, it was originally a wooden box flume that supplied water from Marlette Lake to Virginia City. Quite the engineering feat. The wooden flume was later replaced with an aluminum pipe, both of which have been removed now. Back in the mid 80’s when the trail was first opened there was wood and nails and pipe along most of the length. Tunnel Creek is so named because of the tunnel dug from the end of the flume to the eastern side of the ridge where the water was then piped down then across Washoe Valley and up to Virginia City. All gravity fed since Marlette Lake is higher than VC. There’s also an Incline Flume Trail continuing north from the end of the trail you rode. LOTS of history up there.
Wow! Thanks so much for this very cool history! I wish I had that background when I rode the trail! Maybe for next time when I come back to ride more around Truckee!
@@ronsanderson99 The entire Tahoe Basin has some of the best trails I’ve ridden anywhere. Incredible scenery and everything from flowy jump lines to jaw clenching rocky tech. Let me know when you’re here and I can give you a bunch of options
Rode this trail southbound a couple weeks back (I had only ridden it northbound prior to that) and I must say I prefer southbound. What a great ride. that was part of an epic 50miler I did that left me immobile for a couple days, lol.
"A LITTLE ledgy"? Lol. Too ledgy for me. Thanks for video! Maybe I'll hike that on an 'off' day. Way too much scenery to try to bike that precarious sliver. Also, thanks for not paying that music the whole time.
It's definitely a scenic hike - the whole way! I understand that trails like this aren't for all cyclists. But even though I think it's an intermediate trail, Trailforks actually ranks this as a beginner trail...thanks for watching!
Thanks! and yes the scenery is outstanding...I am thinking I need to return to the Lake Tahoe/Truckee region of California again next year to ride more of these calibre trails. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful, but that freaking cliff on the left side of the trail would totally freak me out these days, in my 70s. I still ride regularly on roads and some trails, but balance is an issue these days. Wish I was 20-30 years younger, so I could check these kinds of trails out. Well done.
My balance isn’t what it used to be but I work on it constantly so it’s not too bad. I’m hoping to ride these trails into my 70’s too! Thanks for watching!
I would not classify this as. Green and some of the sections ate more of a black be cause one small accidents adds up to deadly consequence . The scenery is problematic because ot pulls your eyes away from the trail
Trailforks ranks it as a green mostly because of the wide, smooth trail tread. I classify it as a blue because of the ledgy nature of the trails and that you’ve got to be careful not to enjoy the scenery while riding too much. The segments that are washed out with the landslide are probably black if you attempt to ride them but I’m thinking most riders will dismount and walk these sections. Like all trails, make sure to pay attention! And thanks for watching!

Lucky you to have such close access to this awesome trail! Thanks for watching!
Love how you show the Google Map at the beginning of the video. Found you doing researching trails to ride this summer.
Excellent, welcome aboard! Where are you planning to ride, and what kind of trails do you like?
Memories of going up there as a 11 year old with my dad, thanks for sharing

Agreed! My wife and I rode it back in July. It was so good.
So good…next time I will pack my bathing suit for a dip in the lake at the southern end.

Very cool! So were the nails from the old, since removed rail ties from the railway?

Wow! A 50 mile ride! Must have been awesome, I had wondered if that could be done as a bike pack! Thanks for watching!
Awesome vid. I usually ride intermediate trails so I like this one. Most riders only want to show off their rides on black diamond trails lol.
Thanks for the compliment! I frequently find that some of the most scenic trails are also intermediate…cross country type trails. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful, what a great ride, thanks for taking us with you.
Glad to have you along for this awesome ride!

Yup, and a very rare scene down into the Lake Tahoe crater!

Thanks for the detailed map and guide! Love this
Glad it’s of help! And thanks for watching!
I went off the edge there 2 tear ago.
Wow, that must have been scary…even though the trail surface is very flat and smooth, it really drops away!
that's awesome!
Yes it’s a pretty unique trail!
Are you headed north other trail?
Yes, it rode this trail in the North direction. But it can be ridden either way. Thanks for watching!
Wow!!
Yup it’s a pretty scenic trail…and there are a couple more trails like that in the region…around the Tahoe Rim…
