Kila Mr Bawer ba to? I was there in Kalinga in 2004 and stayed in Tinglayan... I was part of the UP Anthropology Field Schoolers... I usually went to Lubuagan to visit my classmates there, and I got to meet Mr Bawer and another Kalinga Dance/Cultural Arts instructor, but I forgot his name... SIla ung nagtuturo sa STS...
@ 2500 B.C Kalinga was a state, present southern part of Indian state Bihar. Great emperor become saint seeing bloodshed while he conquered. Kalinga language & culture in Philippines seemed to have come via Bhutuan King of province of Philippines. this dance almost as Indian & neighboring areas' dances.
Hawaiilocos Pride I thought to myself man she looks Polynesian. Do you know that Filipinos are an ancient cross between Proto-Polynesian(ancestors of Polynesians before they mixed with Melanesians from East Indonesia) people from Taiwan who mixed with several waves of Austronesians from Taiwan? Genetics, cultural practices and linguistics prove it.
These are members of the former dance troupe Tong-nga-Tong, which was created by Betty Ordono with the help of Mr. Bawer for a special performance in Claveria, Cagayan province in February 2004, at the request of Thelma Buchholdt. Photos and full story are at her website, at the link to Guinaang.
Epic sauce. :) Oh the sounds of the bamboo-made instruments.... So nice. And the dance... It's very simple, but it perfectly blends with the simple music.... Simplicity is beauty!
love the instrumentation and the dance. such a unique combination. love it!! when i went to the philippines a few years ago i went to Banaue and really enjoyed the ancient marvel of the terraces and really valued the moment when i ran into and talked to some elders in their tradition wears. it was like traveling through time. what is a good time to go back to the region when there is a lot of celebrations; dancing & singing like the ancestors use to do?

I think this dance is the 'Sagli'... and the sagli imitates the 'sakpaya' birds? Is that the reason why they are used interchangeably?
