    My MIRV Torpedo's intent is to have a standard torpedo that has near the penetration potential of a quantum without the need to modify the launcher for quantum.
    The setup of the modified torpedo involves a pod that is attached to a torpedo that contains 6 micro torpedoes arrayed around a control/sensor module and a proximity detector. When the enhanced torpedo gets to within three meters of a detectable shield it fires off the salvo of micro torps with the intended effect of over-taxing the shields in that grid area so that the rest of the following torpedo might be able to sail on through. These enhanced torpedoes may also be useful against armored ships once their shields are down.
    Yes, without modification a starship would be firing one less torpedo in a spread, but if the enhanced penetrative & destructive potential of said spread is elevated then the tradeoff should be worth firing one less torpedo. As for the potential for missing, that's going to stand a chance of happening no matter what you're shooting.

      These torps replaced atomic bombs, can the subsequent charges survive the explosion of the first?

    • @randybentley2633
      @randybentley2633 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@matheuscerqueira7952 the pod that the Micro torps are fired from is still attached to the front of the standard photon torp, thus providing a bit of a material buffer before it impacts. I figured 3 meters would be enough, and if not, the follow-on distance can always be increased.

    • @arbhall7572
      @arbhall7572 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the goal is over taxxing the grid, why does your strategy to overwhelm them depend on materials you must carry with you into battle and then on the warhead itself?
      Yeah the ripple of explosions created by micro torpedoes sounds cool, but its not practical. You should be thinking more about incorporating the deflector array, tractor beam technology and especially transporter technology. To reduce the physical load at every corner. So particle streams guided by the tractor beams, say for example utilizing sand. Firing a constant stream of replicated sand particles like a beam, to literally, physically overwhelm and grind down, whatever its being aimed at.
      A relay of warheads that follow along in formation, to just wait for an opportunity to penetrate, for a microsecond flicker in the shield grid. Then boom. Anti matter payloads getting transported directly onto the target. or even just chemical warheads. To dissolve the superstructure, make it brittle or reactive to radiation wavelengths. Perhaps warheads that simply paint the target, literally. To deal with cloaked ships. A radioactive paint that just makes it easy for the sensors to never lose lock. A reactive material that damps energy reactions or depolarizes vital infrastructure. Or eats the hull. You get the idea. Less brute force.

      These augmented torps are intended to serve as a stand-in for quantum torpedoes. Given that not every ship in the fleet is going to receive those OP torps, then why not have the option for a standard photon torpedo that can mimic, to a close degree, the shield-breaking capability of a QT, but not give the reading that would come from carrying them.

      A technique known as "phaser dimpling" creates a similar effect with no modifications or special ordnance required. Basically the torpedoes are fired and right before they hit several phaser shots (at least three separate impacts are ideal but it can work with one or two) are fired at the expected impact point if the torpedoes. These phaser hits weaken the target shield bubble for the fraction of a second it takes for the torpedoes to hit. The torpedoes ideally fly through this weak point. Because of the way shields work the subsequent blast is actually compressed between the shield and the target hull. This technique has never been seen in the films but shows up in many rpg, combat sim and even some video games.

    The akira is an exception. She was built to do one thing, put out a sustained, multi frequency torpedo barrage on a borg cube. Literally nothing else. The luna is a far more balanced design, the Akira is a warship.

      No. The Akira is more battle oriented but it has a huge flight deck for fighter craft as well as a huge torpedo load out. The phaser arrays are more than adequate as well. The Akira is still a very large ship with the mass in the saucer although less than the Luna class still can be used as an explorer though less capable in that role. The Luna is a multi task vessel as a more traditional Star Fleet vessel thus the need for a larger size to accommodate the extra equipment and departments.

What do you think about the redesigned Shakir class in Star Trek Online? 10:35 funny you put the Japanese flag behind the Akira as the Akira( and the Alita and Armitage) are named after Japanese anime / manga from the 90's. The Akira after the manga and anime movie of the same name, Alita after the main character from the manga Battle Angel Alita and Armitage named after the OVA Armitage the Third. The TNG production teams were anime fans and hid references everywhere.

    "On the original (Andor), aesthetically it's a bit of a disaster." Agreed, but if it works... Eight rapid-fire torpedo launchers have a beauty all their own. For anti-starfighter, I like the concept from the ancient game Star Fleet Battles of phaser gatlings. They are essentially a phaser emplacement with multiple emitters that fire rapid bursts at lower power levels to hit fighters and drones.

    An idea about the application of MIRV torpedoes: ship shields are often subdivided into different quadrants which can operate independently. You can focus shield power in one quadrant over the others, or if one section is depleted you can angle your ship so a healthier shield is facing your enemy.
    A MIRV torpedo volley could be used to attack simultaneously from multiple vectors and exploit weakened areas of the shield. Think Prometheus’s multi vector attack mode, but more economical. Mix a few full sized torpedoes into a volley to keep the enemy on their toes and I think this could be fairly effective.

    • @matthewpicchu8232
      @matthewpicchu8232 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Akira fits as a heavy cruiser being largest anti-Borg ship after the Sovereign. The Luna is like the Sovereign's Miranda/Nebula.
    Cluster torpedoes are an interesting thing in Star Trek. There's actually quite a few of them in STO for all that's worth.

    @nekophht 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like to think that the Federation doesn't do capital ships because it doesn't want a "battle fleet" as Starfleet is primarily for peaceful exploration. What Starfleet did do early on is call everything one "size" smaller. So frigates and destroyers are frigates, light cruisers are destroyers, etc. And also it calls its "capital ships" large cruisers because they are largely supersized heavy cruisers. Also like to think that large cruisers are modular (swap in more weapon/shield/sensor systems during wartime, swap out for science/diplo/etc system in peacetime) and take after German battlecruisers, emphasizing defensive capability over firepower even in peacetime configuration. Of course, Starfleet probably never bothered to swap in the war modules at any point and possibly stopped bothering with the modular aspect by the time of the Galaxy-class.
    Personally, I think Akira started as a shuttle carrier concept during the war with the Cardassians, ran into flight deck height issues in testing, was going to be converted into a regular cruiser, Wolf 359 happened, and Akira instead tilted hard into anti-Borg capabilities (say, paired with a pack of Defiants?). (I want to think that the Akira was originally named something else as a carrier, and as it went anti-Borg, it got named for a member of the quantum torp design team that died at Wolf 359.) Then down the line modular parts were done so an Akira could trade the pod or port/starboard launchers for other things like sensors, shields, etc. A sensor Akira would be a good replacement for things like the Antares-type Miranda (survivability) or a sensor pod Nebula (manpower reqs, build cost).
    On the torpedoes, I feel like the quantum torpedoes are larger than photon torpedoes, hence a need for a launcher specifically capable of handling them compared to the standard launcher design. Otherwise, why specifically designate launchers one way or the other?

Just because something is written there it doesn't mean its true - it just means that the in-universe writer of these words wrote those words - either believing in them or purposefully lying.
    I kinda agree it's sad that people forget about DDs and Cruisers in WW I and II. I for one love what Japanesee could do with their destroyer torpedo strikes under the cover of the night.

    See, I'd always assumed that the whole Galaxy class "full spread" torpedoes were in fact MERV'd. I think it sort of fits the TNG era idea of "we still want to be competent but also look less aggressive". So for the Galaxy the compromise for the designers becomes "okay so we put in only a few torpedo tubes to tone down the warship look, but we made them fire MERVs so a single shot spews out like ten torpedoes", and with the great size of the ship they can make their torpedoes larger and with respectable sized warheads.
    I do like Drach's idea of MERV'd torpedoes as an anti-cloak tech though from the TOS-Lost Era. Hedgehog in SPAAAAACE!

    I Always found it hard to believe that the Akira can adequately perform the duties of a torpedo boat (15 launchers and enough ordinance to make them useful), a carrier (with room for a squadron of Peregrine class figthers-not small themselves, their crews, their ordinance, their spares, and fuel), and exploration cruiser (based on Starfleet's overall mission with science and diplomatic suites) at the same time in a single hull. In my headcanon I have split the Akira up into three variants. One for reach role, the 15-launcher torpedo boat, the carrier, and the exploration cruiser. Based on the overall design of the Akira these are also not modular. The vessel is built with only a single role in mind.

That was the best peace of propaganda ever sold.and of coarse that little old phase cloaking device we destroyed ir right away because that would totally not be fair play.how dou you think the quantum torpedo works so well from.but I can tell you we sire did destroy that phase cloak or may it was a fake that hot destroyed and the orginal one end up in a federation black pops yard in a very violent nebula we re no ships can hope to surve or could thay I wounder.this thing may or may not exist.and no im not talking thoughs pin heads over in article 31 ether.though guy are amatures but thsy make a good smoke screen for the real black opps group .who operate from a base most call wounder land but we knew as the dragons lair. But what do I know im just a old retired combat officers set out to pasturer. Like I said boys just use your imagination and the tec avaliable in your day and age now advance 300 years and a little splash of wickedness and malice into the mix and you would be really surprized were your brain well take you but again nothing to worry about were the federation the good guys we would never? Right ? We would never?
    Just remember at the end of the day there a high price to pay to be the biggest rock superstar .and the universe is all about only the strongest smarts well surve and that my friends well never change.

    See my problem with Star Trek is, the federation isn’t properly militarized. They’ve shown the capabilities early on…they have an infantry mortar that erases an entire hill…yet they make stupid ships, that are insanely weak…and they don’t even make enough to try to keep things stable….they have all the tools, but suck instead.

      Sisko was competent though, Macarthur was not, Sisko saw the dominio0n attack on DS9 coming, prepared a defense of his command area including denying the key strategic objective to the enemy and evacuated his force largely intact, Macarthur did none of those things
