My whole life we cruised between the mainland ( Marina Del Rey,Long Beach and San Pedro) to Avalon, the Isthmus and San Diego (Mission Bay). So many trips with other friends on their boats over 45 years! So many great memories. Great times also in college with a buddy's boat that we re-powered our selves and made so many trips. Diving, fishing, and running around in the dingy. Thanks for taking us along memory lane.
PDGearhead - we’ve got memories there going back a long time too. Great place to get away. We took our first “real boat” - and old single screw 32 foot Tollycraft to the Ithamus from San Diego when we were just out of college. One of my friends pitched a camping tent on the upper deck to get away from the rest of the crowd.
My father started with his first power cruiser in 1965. We had a total of 4 boats from 1965 until 2008 (43 years) with no interruption. The third one, a 37 foot sedan we had for 30 years and 1 month. Got to know that one well. I even lived on board during college (Loyola Marymount) in Marina Del Rey, just down the hill from school. The fourth boat, dad and I jointly bought a 1988 30 ft Tollycraft Sport model with twin Crusaders. It was a bit smaller, but extremely well made and a great way for my dad to close out his boating career.
What kind of fishing boat did your friend have? It looks like an excellent boat to learn on. I have absolutely zero boating experience and I'm looking for something to go fishing, crabbing and shrimping in. I liked the enclosed area the cooking area and the hardtop so you have a little protection from the weather. Thanks for the time you guys put into educating people. I've been wanting to look into trawlers and I came across your Podcast. I guess once in a while you get shown the light In the strangest of places if you look at it right. Best wishes on the journey forward. May you get back on the water soon.
Looked like good times. What great families! We were at Avalon during the Santa Anas, and had to leave the mooring early. Ate at the restaurant at the end of the pier and were not impressed, but had dinner and drinks at Bluewater Avalon several times and loved the place. You have to really watch tying up at the dock because everyone seems to tie really close. You're supposed to have around 8-10 foot for your painter, but that rule doesn't seem to be enforced. We normally anchor at Cat Harbor then sail to Little Harbor to lobster fish, but Avalon is fun about once every three years or so. I don't think there is a bad place or any bad times to be had at Catalina Island.
Please share your music selection for this video. It is wonderful. (especially the climbing on the rocks). FYI: I lived on my 44' DeFever at MV Gate 11 for 8 years.
Sea Travel - most likely a slightly larger Nordhavn. There are a few specific boats that we are really interested in. Will have to see how timing works with the sale of this boat...

Bill Bolton - we've recently been getting royalty free music from Epidemic Sound. It's kind of overwhelming how much there is to select from and I'm no expert video editor so it takes a little trial and error to find the right music that fits. I don't have our editing software open right now so can't tell you specific titles but we can definitely share. Ask me again if I forget to post!
Shelley McCarthy - we haven’t published any expense data yet but we will definitely do that routinely in the future. We are in the process of selling our 40 so we will likely publish expense information once we get onto a different boat - which will hopefully be soon!
Michael Jackson - we haven’t really talked about selling it in any of the videos yet but mentioned it in the notes. Will definitely discuss the process of deciding to look for a new bit at some point in the near future.
In the listing for Cassidy it stares that the boat had sank at some time, well before you guys owned it I believe. Do you know the story of what happened to it?
Corey Garrison - we don’t know the details and she’s had 2 owners since then I believe. It was a concern when we first looked to buy - but after seeing the boat in person and spending two full days with a surveyor and mechanical technicians looking over every detail of the boat, it wasn’t a concern and there was no evidence of long term damage. We’ve put over 1,000 hours and 5,000 nautical miles on her since we bought her and no issues other than normal maintenance things. She’s been a super solid boat.
@@CassidysSailingTrawler good deal! Although I've never owned a large trawler like Cassidy, I've never bought a boat that didn't need major work, as long as it's done right even something big can be taken care of.
Don Johnston - any suggestions? I’ve read about at least one but it was expensive, the camera didn’t seem great, and functionality not as good as the DJI drones. That said, being safe in a malfunction when flying over water would be a really nice plus.
Don Johnston - I just got a chance too look at the specs for that swellpro drone. It looks really impressive - especially for the price. I'd be curious to see a review from someone that has used one in the real world. The DJI drones are really nice as far as the flight controls and cameras but unfortunately they don't make anything waterproof. I the one we recovered from the bottom of Avalon Harbor into DJI for evaluations but my expectations for repair or replacement are low.
Michael C. - that is the current plan. But an appropriate line that I’ve often heard and may be applicable is “our plans our written in the sand at low tide”. No matter what we will continue to cruise.

It’s a Parker 2320. Made in North Carolina but they are very popular in Southern California.
