Twenty One Pilots - Car Radio - Old Guy Reaction

  • Guys, this song is incredible. I cannot wait to crank this in my car. Such an awesome video. We loved it. There was really a lot more meaning than just a car radio for sure. It brought out some moments of discussion as the other old guy reactioner lived through some stuff at a younger age. He has felt what Blurry Face was talking about. He literally said, "I feel like reaching out to this guy and helping him". That did not come from a shallow spot in the old guys personality....believe me!

I’m 42 yrs old. I took my daughter and the family to their concert a few years ago. I liked what I had heard on the radio but didn’t really know much about them. I was mostly doing it for my teenager. Lol. I was blown away. The best concert you’ll ever go to. I’ve been an old fan girl since then. We plan our vacations around their concerts now. They work their butts off to put on a show for you. There’s all ages there from 5 to 85.
Don’t stop reacting to TØP! You’ll love their whole catalogue. Tyler doesn’t write a bad song. How many times nowadays do you hear about a solitary writer pumping out hits like Tyler does? He’s so insanely talented and genuine. I mean...to write, sing, rap, play multi instruments, create their own beats.....it’s insanity!

SAMMMMMEEEEE!! I am 49 and we went to three Bandito shows and traveled a lot. LOVE THEM!! Best shows I have ever been too. I even started taking drum lessons last year...lol!

Completely agree! My middle son, for his 15th bday this past summer wanted to see them, so my wife and I got tix for us 3. Her and I knew their radio hits, etc., but no deep dive (until after). It was one of the best shows I've ever seen (and given the amount of concerts my lady and I have attended, that's saying a lot!!) Also, the general vibe of the crowd was VERY positive. Lots of families. Teens and even younger. No rowdiness, just a great, energetic concert vibe.
After it was done, I told my wife that that show just made my top 5 all time (so in the company of Tool, Rush, Muse...good company to be in!).
      Blown away was an understatement!

The song is actually inspired bc someone did steal Tyler's Car Radio but he takes it to a much deeper level of how they took the thing that distracts him from his problems and thoughts - so now he has nothing to block out those images and thoughts and he's trapped with his thoughts- but the Car Radio can also be taken as a metaphor for anything - someone's Car Radio could be reading, movies, working out, etc
Also if you notice at the end his hair is back - thats intentional - I think it shows how the next morning he wakes up and he has to fight the same battles again
Some other good ones to introduce you to them:
    Ode to Sleep
    Lane Boy
    Migraine
    Ride

Its basically, when you place yourself in a room without any distractions your mind will run away with itself. The places it can go can be pretty terrifying. It might force you to face realities of your life when all you wanna do is turn on some music and escape. Thats something distractions numb us to. This is something tyler (the singer) came up with because somebody literally stole his radio out of his car and he didnt replace it right away.

I resonate with the "It's not so much that I don't wanna live" but for me it was always "It's not so much that I don't wanna *live* so much as I'm tired, and I wouldn't be angry if I simply stopped."
I'm in a much better place now, but - Twenty One Pilots music has kept me *on the edge* instead of letting go of the edge on more than one occasion. ♥
Neon Gravestones would be another good one. Very deep, quite heavy - but very good. ♥

    • @oldguyreactions
      @oldguyreactions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thank you for this comment! I love it!
Mankind was designed by God to naturally be ok with the end of life. Take it from an old guy...As we live our lives we become increasingly more "Tired" as you mentioned above. This tired experience prepares us to embrace death in the end. So it is always interesting that whenever you hear of someone who died, you ask: "How Old Were They?". When you hear that they were older, you feel less stress because we assume that they had lived a long life and were more prepared for the end.
Even though no-one really wants to die at any age, there is that preparedness that comes no matter what. It is almost like driving your car over 100,000 miles. You start to naturally prepare your mind that your car is going to breakdown and die at some point.
Having said all this, your comment (my opinion) shows that technology and the world (through communication devices) has put undue stress on the younger generation. There is so much pressure on everyone's shoulders that should not be. The younger generation should be thinking about career, having fun, goals, relationships, seeing the world and not caring about the end. Unfortunately, this pressure is making the younger generation increasingly more "Tired" as you mentioned and therefore the preparedness of death comes to early. I hope all of this makes sense. It is a tragic state in our world and It is because of technology.
The only way for us to navigate this complex state as normal as we can, is to focus on relationships. Who are the most important people of your life? Don't argue with each other about trivial stuff in life. When I say trivial....I mean all of the politic propaganda thrown in our faces by politicians designed to make us argue. Let's choose to love the people we have relationships with. Let us cultivate those relationships with meaningful purpose. We absolutely have things in common. Let's talk, let's get together, let's eat together, let's go places, let's ignore technology for a time and most of all, let's say (and mean) that we appreciate each other.
Then, the absolute most important thing is to cultivate a relationship with something way bigger than humanity....That is your Creator. We cannot do anything ourselves. We need guidance, purpose, knowledge and peace. Thank you for the awesome comment. You got me to spend over an hour thinking about it. Many feel it, but we hardly ever discuss. It deserves discussion. Thank you Twenty One Pilots for getting the discussion going!

I just gotta say the part where the beat dropped, I loved the different reactions the both of you had. Your face had the pure joy and excitement of the energy in the room, and your buddy's face showed so much emotion. (Both are totally appropriate for this song.) Every time I hear the beat drop, I get full body chills. You can just hear Tyler's emotional release at that point. The gradual build of the song, I think, also helps you go through his stages of his mind. The beginning with him all alone, then being surrounded and literally lifted up by his fans, the dance-like beat at the end almost helps you forget the pain you felt at the start (I think lots of people miss the "I could pull the steering wheel" part, to me it's a reference to him saying he could end his life), and then finally at the end he is back alone on stage, and can take off his mask that he puts on so people can't see what he's really feeling. Well that ended up longer than I expected to write haha. Glad you guys enjoyed, and hope to see you do more!

@@oldguyreactions the song about how music is a escape for him thinking about suicide or being depress etc. (Like many people) and how someone actually stole his radio in college and how his mind wonder into these deep thought cause he didn't have music to escape to and the mask on his face is a thing he does so people will pay attention to the lyrics more enstead of paying attention to him in a way
And kinda like a safety blanket
Entell he rips it off on stage to say this makes me feel safe (also the drummer Josh does it in the music video "gun for hands" once he get behind his drum set )

@Michelle Edwards great comment, but what stands out for me is what you mentioned about this line "I could pull the steering wheel". I like the way how it was put inside the song like something small, something forgettable, something that you mention casually and just go on, but in fact is something very important and it shows that noticing small things, some small changes can actually be of a lot of help to someone who's struggling. I know you can interpret this in many ways, but my point was intended to emphasize how this song is well written and that Tyler was paying attention to even a smallest details to deliver an important message. Maybe I have written more than I intended to, but all in all, great comment from you and great song, of course 💪

Being at the concert is like you said, it's a whole room "of these mutant kids," people who struggle with life, depression, self harm, low self esteem, etc, and you are all there together, as one unit, absorbing music from a group who has been through a lot and shares it with you and they get you. It's hard to describe. But just as much as they give in their lives shows, they get back from the audience, and vice versa. You know that you are not alone when you're at the shows. It's amazing. And Trees, live at the Fox Theater is the best way to see what the experience is like. Any of the videos at the Fox Theater are good. Great reaction! Keep going!

Hi guys great reaction So they understand Tyler (vocalist of the band) suffers from depression and Josh (drummer) suffers from anxiety, the songs are based on the fact that they and their audience, the fans (clique or banditos) overcome those things together and that their music is what helps Tyler suffers from depression and he represents those fears and insecurities in black necks and hands and he called these fears, insecurities and depression as Blurryface (Blurryface represents his greatest fears and insecurities and he constantly has an internal fight with Blurry) he fights it through music because it is an escape and distraction from his mind and in this way he tells his audience that instead of being overcome by depression and resorting to suicide, they fight it as they can and that we are not alone, they saved my life. life and they mean a lot I would like to explain more about this band and for you to understand it as its music it is necessary to follow in linear order His music are like seasons of a series and his albums are the seasons and the chapters are the videos and the music so I give them to you in order so that you understand them Frontline: Vessel Album 1 ode to sleep (Video Official) 2 Car Radio (Official Videos) 3 Holding onto you video Official 4 Guns for hands official video 5 Migraine 6 Fake You Out lyrics 7 Trees (concert at fox theater) Here ends the first line Second line: Blurryface album 1 Stressed out 2 Fairly Local 3 Ride 4 Hometown 5 Lane Boy 6 Tear in My heart 7 Not Today 8 message man 9 Goner 10 Heathens 11 Heavydirtysoul (Official video it is very important that you leave this last in this line because it connects with the last line of the last album) Third line: Trench 1 Jumpsuit (connected to Heavydirtysoul, is the story that happens after this video) 2 Nico and the niners (continues with Jumpsuit story) 3 Levitate (end of a triology of history) 4 Chlorine 5 The hype (both versions) 6 My blood 7 Pet cheetah (lyrics) 8 Morph (letter because it explains the connection of the stories) 9 Neon gravestones 10 Bandito 11 Leave the city (end of the trench era) I hope you can continue reacting to Twenty, I already subscribed and I expect more from them, I send you greetings and much support from Argentina !!

I was so glad that I was able to take my entire family to see them in concert. It was a fantastic show and you nailed it when you were talking about concerts. You are all going through those feelings together. I really identified with the guy on the left for more than one reason (hair haha) with your thoughts on the song. It is an anthem/dance song but the lyrics are so much deeper than that. Keep exploring their songs like several others have suggested and you won't be disappointed.

As someone with a really bad anxiety disorder, this song hit me in the most literal sense. When I had a car that didn't have a radio, I had to buy one as soon as possible because my mind would literally go to these things. Bad thoughts, negative self image, everything wrong in life, and sometimes how I could just.. well pull the wheel and end it. Music can be anthems, but it can also be such an ultimate and passive distraction for the mind.. and some people need that so bad.
Car Radio and Migraine by Twenty One Pilots are songs I have always loved the most from them because they express so well how I feel in a very literal sense at times.

My dad is around the same age as you guys and this is one of his favorite songs. He's liked them for quite a while which is kind of funny because he doesn't listen to a lot of mainstream music. He told me that years ago he introduced one of his colleagues to TØP and his colleague proceeded to show it to his daughters who-just like a lot of people my age-got super into them.

I think that this is one of the best songs ever written, and I'm an old man like ya. I get exactly what he is saying. Sitting with no distraction, your mind wonders, sometimes for good, but man when it wonders into troubled area, and can leave you in despair. We need that distraction; it helps get us through tough times.

I'm sure someone else mentioned, but it's pretty literal. Without the distraction of the radio, if you're not in a great place, your mind will wander to uncomfortable places. It can be scary, but it's also important to understand they are just thoughts and it's OK to feel them and important try to process and cope with them.

The radio is what you listen to to escape the voices in your head. The worry, the anxiety, the depression, the reality. Take away that car radio. When you drive its just you left with your thoughts, being forced to face that reality, the worry creeps in, you overthink, you panic. Sometimes quiet is violent. I liked it better when my car had sound.

  • @ddoggphx

I love that both of you nodded when he said we are all battling fear. Yup. We are. Our fear is individual. And owned by us individually because we don't ever share that true fear that we hear when the car radio is gone or the airpods/earbuds disconnect.

  • @selene2387
    @selene2387 2 ปีที่แล้ว

i think this is really about battling depression and overthinking and anxiety. nowadays, we listen to so much music because it calms us or it allows us let out this anger and without it we are just in so much silence that at that point the silence is so loud, you hear voices and its you overthinking about every detail (like his hair!)

I think (Skeleton Crew will correct me) Twenty One Pilots name is based off an Arthur Miller play Tyler did in high school about a scientist/engineer something and he sold out to the company he worked for a big payment knowing what he made possibly may malfunction. There were Twenty One Pilots that tested it out and they all died. The inventor couldn’t handle it and ended up committing suicide.

Twenty One Pilots got their name from an Arthur Miller play called All My Sons. All My Sons is about a family dealing with the fact that the factory the father worked out sent defective parts to the military during (I believe) WW2, and 21 pilots died due to the defective parts.

Their concerts are filled with babies to oldies who just appreciate the talent and the vibe. Enjoy! Holding Onto You, the Trench trilogy, Neon Gravestones, Pet Cheetah, so many great tunes..

TøP is great and many people with anxiety and depression have said they can't drive without music or some kind of white noise to drown out the road. I'm one of those people and while it annoys the hell out of my dad I have to turn on the radio while I'm in a car, as the driver or the passenger. Even if it's so low you can't hear it, I have to have some noise that isn't the car or road.

Not sure if your aware of this yet...but you've stumble upon one of THE GREATEST ARTIST of this time. TØP is a group like know other. Alot of people have a hard time defining their genre because it is so diverse.
To fully understand their music you really must go BACK and listen to their other stuff. Their music takes their followers on a journey with deep lyrics powerful music.
If TØP ever comes your town see them with out hesitation. They put on one of the best concerts I've ever seen. And that's a big statement coming from another Old guy that's seen artists from Kool Moe Dee and Salt N Pepa to RUSH and Kiss. My daughter introduced me to TØP a few years back been enjoying their music ever since.
By the way check out "Level of Concern" they created thru the pandemic...very real glimpse into these guys.😊✌

I just realized, at the end when he looks to the camera with his audience behind him, he’s saying that everyone in the room is telling us they are now “just sitting in silence”….he’s wanting the elders to know our kids are looking at us saying “give us some good answers, we are confused and depressed at what you’ve given us”.

  • @GrayShadowOfNight

The car Radio can be seen quite literally. When I go about my day, I almost always have some noise around. Music, podcasts etcetc.
Its at some points that I make the conscious decision to not put anything on and to actually face my thoughts.
Tyler in here, is forced to do so when the radio got stolen. He has no other option but to listen to his thoughts.
He has to think about who he killed in his dream (suicidal thoughts) and even while driving he has the urge to pull the steering wheel (another suicidal though)
But as the song progresses he keeps mentioning that he "should replace the slot with what he once bought"
But that makes you wonder, why doesn't he? Has he already bought a replacement but keeps the slot empty?
In one of the rap parts he talks to us, the audience, that he tries with every rhyme to make us think. That it's important to face your thoughts and not avoid them.
The music kicks off more and more and it shows how the "silence" is filled with sound. Which comes from his head.
I like to think that he didn't replace his car radio because he comes to realize that he needs that time to think.
The last sentence is "and now I just sit" without the "in silence", and I think that's intentional.

Fun Fact: The band name is a reference to the Arthur Miller play "All My Sons" where the main character Joe Keller knowingly sells aircraft engines with cracked cylinder heads to the US Airforce during WWII in order to save his business. These faulty engines went on to kill 21 pilots which ultimately leads to Joe committing suicide over the guilt and letdown from his family. Tyler studied the play in school and the moral complexity struck a chord and stuck.
