I’ve loved your Ren reactions and I’m so glad you are checking out TØP! They both tackle deep topics but offer hope and use music to channel their experiences in a very positive way.
Someone actually did steal Tyler’s car radio when he was in college and he couldn’t afford to replace it. So he was trapped in silence alone with his thoughts, which was a dangerous place for him to be. And yes, the line “I could pull the steering wheel” is a reference to suicidal thoughts. Tyler struggled with severe mental health issues and has used music to battle against the dark thoughts.
They have continued to use the car as a metaphor. And this song is a central part of their live shows. Their concerts are incredible!
One of the themes that comes up a lot are cycles, so I think when he takes off the mask he is back to where he was at the beginning, alone with his thoughts and his insecurities. When battling mental health struggles, it can feel like a non-stop loop that is hard to break. So I’ve interpreted it almost like a Groundhog Day phenomenon. But there are a lot of ways to interpret their music and videos.
Next I would check out Migraine.

Hello Stuart I really love that you have joined the band that saved my life on several occasions and that I love You can be sure that you have a new subscriber for the channel if there are more than twenty around here Tell you that the singer is called Tyler and the drummer is called Josh Tyler created a world and characters that through that represent mental states and their insecurities such as Blurryfaces physically represented with Tyler's hands and neck black and red eyes and the color that Blurryface is also reprimanded is red blurryface is a set of insecurities and fears of tyler made up of 9 bishops called nico and the niners where they live in a city where "Vialismo" (suicide) is practiced called the municipality of Dema At the same time, there is the counterpart of Blurryface, what are the bandits, they are the representation of the positive and what is friendship and love of family and friends and the color that represents them is yellow, they have their own city or camp called "Trench" located very outside of Dema I hope you delve further into this world, since their albums are like chapters of this story and it all starts with Car Radio, the incredible songs of this beautiful Band I know you are going to love If more to say, much love and support for your channel from my dear Argentina!! I'm right there w/you: if I'm not listening to a podcast, music, a lecture/speech, or an audio book, I'm likely watching some movie or an interesting series, but I'm almost NEVER in complete silence, I even have ear buds in when I'm out in public. If I don't have some sort of audible distraction, my thoughts tend to veer towards feeling depressed, anxious, worried about the future, regretting the past, or replaying any # of various thoughts that prevent me from being clear-headed & stress-free. And, sadly, I can't afford the disruption, as I have rare health disorders wherein the symptoms tend to worsen when I'm in a state of heightened stress.

At the end his hair does come back - I think that's just a reminder to everyone that even though he puts his mask on to hide what's really going on - when it comes back off he's still the same nervous person from the beginning - I think it also shows the cycles people can go through

I've always seen it as the beginning where he shaved his head and then went out on stage was all in his head, and at the end, there was no crowd, he was stuck with his thoughts and his hair was still there because he only shaved it in his head. The idea that the beginning is in his thoughts is that there are sections that are all blurry and distorted, which would be similar to the way humans think.

@@TherapistReactsOfficial I know this video is old and you probably won't read this but I really hope that you do. I would love to hear your response to this analysis. I've always related to it as though, and perhaps this is the dark place I'm in emotionally speaking, but to me it's saying at the beginning he did, in fact pull the steering wheel, as the tempo of the song picks up and becomes more chaotic, it's symbolizing his car tumbling, also his realization that he's made a terrible, irrevocable mistake. As he is in the crowd, I see that as either he is unconscious, perhaps even dead, conversing with the spirits of those he loves and has lost, or perhaps his life flashing before his eyes, and could Even symbolize the trauma team working on him, trying to bring him back. Then, at the end, when he pulls his mask off and his hair has regrown, symbolizes that he was, in fact, actually only dreaming or was given a redo on that decision, now that he's gone through the experience and realized that the shit he was going through, that he thought was so heavy and unbearable and permanent, in fact, was miniscule in relation to the finality of making the choice to pull the steering wheel. Again, this could be me projecting my own issues on today's situation that's not there lol. I love this video. You did a good job.

That second verse. I have to sing with it but I always end up crying a little. It's such a powerful verse for me anyways. Did you catch it all?
I ponder of something terrifying cuz this time there's no sound to hide behind. I find over the course of our human existence one thing consists of consistence and it's that we're all battling fear, oh dear, I don't know if we know why we're here. Oh my, too deep, please stop thinking, I liked it better when my car had sound.
There are things we can do but from the things that work there are only 2 and from the 2 that we choose to do, peace will win and fear will lose. There's faith and there's sleep, we need to pick one please because faith is to be awake and to be awake is for us to think and for us to think is to be alive and I will try with every rhyme to come across like I am dying to let you know you need to try to think.
I found this song around 2015 or so which I see as a pivotal point in US history so that got tied into this song for me as well as previous mental health struggles. I've had the car with no radio when all I've needed was a distraction. Well, all I could find or reach for at the time was distraction. Still is I suppose. Maybe that's why it still hits so hard for me. Thanks again, for giving your perspective ✌️

I've been to two of their concerts and it's very clear that all they want is to perform for people. I think for them that connection to people, creating "The Few, The Proud, The Emotional" community, for all of us that felt misunderstood and alone in life, this is the moment when we're not alone. And they are not alone too. On the shows, when they perform "Car radio", Tyler usually climbs up a pole in the middle of the crowd, couple of meters above our heads, and he stands at tiny platform with no security, and he screams to us. On "Holding onto you", Josh plays his drums on a platform that is held by people in the crowd, literally holding onto them. And their fans stay still, knowing that Josh's safety depends on them. On the first concert I saw, Tyler was running on the crowd in a giant hamster ball, and peoples hands made a surface for him to run on.
I am 37, and Twenty One Pilots dragged me through the darkest times in my life, I basically owe my life to them. "Car radio" was the first one I heard, and I was listening to it non stop for weeks, while starting my first therapy, dealing with alcoholism, seeing psychiatrists. I was alone, but thanks to them, I wasn't. Now I am a mom, a wife, I have a career and I am the happiest I have ever been. And I believe I owe it to them.

The way they both consistently look out to the crowd in AWE and appreciation. It’s in the lyrics too how much they care about us “And I will try with every rhyme, To come across like I am dying, To let you know you need to try to think“ Like UGHHHH. And now with Clancy!?!? ATROFD has me SOBBING.
When I went, Josh did a backflip off of Tyler’s piano during Holding On To You instead but it’s probably just a difference in venue.

Tyler is the singer of 21 pilots. This song relates to me very much because it shows the "loudness" of anxiety, panic attacks and PTSD all of which I have. The distraction of sound is a life numb er. Just keeping out the past, the current and creating a safe zone. If that is removed the depression gets louder and louder. I love 21 pilots because they have had many songs dealing with mental health awareness and illness which is at a record post covid as the world had to stay home and deal more with out the social integration that help so many as we are a social being and that being cut off for many in many ways was a shock even harder than during "normal" times like post covid.

This sits with me because a couple times I’ve had my car stereo ripped. It’s not just the fact that someone has entered your personal space, (car) but has pulled the stereo in a total disreguard for decency. Meaning they grab wires and pull them hard so they’re ripped and yanked out, the bolts are not unthreaded but cut or bent back and forth until they break. Windows are broken and they leave DAMAGE. I usually had custom exhaust pipes on my vehicles and they rumbled along, a stereo was always part of this American car culture years ago.

21 Pilots hair growing back is showing us that even after enough time has passed for his hair to grow, and even after experiencing the euphoria of a crowd with music replacing the sounds he lost when his radio was nicked, which is louder than the silence in his head; he’s still thinking about ‘falling’ and he’s still alone. We have to ask why! Is it because no one in his circle has noticed or tried to help? The fact that he’s circling around his problem as the video circles almost back to the beginning, suggests he’s not really made much progress in finding possible solutions to the problem, which obviously is not the fact he has no radio. In order to break the cycle, we have to let our close circle (or someone else) in. As they cross the threshold and we begin to discuss or confide, that circle of entrapment either releases altogether or widens to give us more manoeuvrability. It is not just his car steering wheel that turns round, his thoughts spin like the wheels of his car and like the cogs of his mind. His thoughts regenerate in the same style and fashion, just like his hair.

The hair being back and by himself along with the change in musical tone indicates the somewhat cyclical nature of coping with mental illness. It can't be defeated, but you can learn skills for dealing with it, and each day starts anew where you'll likely need to put them to use.

This song, along with a lot of other twenty one pilot songs has helped me through a lot of though times. I believe I owe them my life. "Migrane", "Holding on to you", "guns for hands", "friend please" and "trapdoor" are some of their songs that speak the truth about mental health and how it can feel, or how it can be seen and misunderstood from the outside.
It is funny you mentioned NF, as Twenty one pilots is one of few that inspired NF and his music. Or so I've heard. =)
Good to get a professional point of view (that meaning you are a theriapist who knows a lot about anxiety and depresion) on their songs. =)

Thanks for listening to TØP! They touch on some really deep topics, and in 2015 their album Blurryface got me through a really dark time. Tyler is very honest about his emotions and his experience with mental health, and that hopeful honesty helped keep me afloat when I started having mental illness symptoms. Their song The Judge was very impactful for me, and later the song Neon Gravestones helped me to remember what I was fighting for. I hope you react to more of their songs!!

I would love to see you react to a band called Icon for Hire. They're criminally underrated. Most of their songs deal with issues of mental health. Their lyrics are always very meaningful, and their sound is both exceptionally good (consistently so) and explores a great diversity (hard rock, electro, pop, rap...). All of their songs are worth listening to, but here are a few that are good starting points I think: Hollow, Brittle, Under the Knife, Panic Attacks, I think I'm Sick, You Can't Kill Us, Get Well II, Up in Flames, Only be a Story, Supposed to Be, Enemies.
I think I overdid it... it's really hard to make a small list, they truly have made so many amazing songs.

I think that the Lore whith Dema starts here, Tyler is left alone with his toughts, so he sinks into his depression, thats how he ended up in Dema and under control the bishops, that would explain why blurryface was taking him to Dema in a car that was falling appart at heavy dirty soul.

“I don’t know why but I feel connected to him for some reason”
EXACTLY!!! That’s precisely why they have one of the most dedicated, loyal and long term fan bases of all time imo!
Also…this is a band that you will probably NEVER find yourself “overreaching &/or over analyzing pretty much everything that they do…music videos, song lyrics or even the order in which the songs are arranged on an album ffs!😅
Welcome to the most.ridiculously intricate and expansive lore that absolutely makes most music artists(even NF), bands, game or movie lore appear to be meager in comparison🤦‍♀️😳but imo it’s absolutely worth it my dude! 😉👍
So if you are intent on truly “understanding” T0P and go down the rabbit hole………you better buckle up and got ready to go down the freaking mother of all rabbit holes my friend!😅
….oh and btw, you brought up NF at one point and that’s awesome for me (as a new sub of yours, or I will be subbing to your channel immediately after I type this comment at least😉)
cause just like T0P…I’m a HUGE fan of NF aswell, have been since all the way back a few months after he released the “Mansion” album ffs!😁👍 As for T0P I’ve been a fan since shortly after they released the “BlurryFace” album!
And it is not a coincidence that you will often hear that people whom are fans of one are also fans of the other too. As imo(and plenty of others) even tho on the surface they might not seem similar…in truth they are actually quite alike in many ways…but considering that this comment has either crossed or is skirting along the border and close to crossing into “stupid or ridiculously and unnecessarily long” territory already so for now I’ll just give a few examples of things that imo make them somewhat alike when talking about their music and perhaps even their philosophy/beliefs………
    (to my knowledge)
Neither put swears / curse words in their music whatsoever.
Both consider themselves “Christians” of one sort or another.
Tho neither consider themselves “Christian Artists/Rappers”
Both of them make music that most often deals with “Mental Health” issues in one way or another.
But anyways……I’m happy that I just sorta stumbled upon this reaction and I thoroughly enjoyed what you had to say…and even tho yours is far from the first time that I’ve come across, I still found your demeanor and ideas on the topic very interesting and really and truly enjoyable! So I’m stoked to check out the channel and it’s content both old and new!

This song is good to show music as distraction for your depression
Early Song: Talks about being silent. No radio. Silent is violent. Force to think of fear. Depression.
Middle song: Give audience a taste of car radio sound like. Dope music come in. (To show the music is a good distraction of overthinking). Everyone fell in this trap because dope concert thingy and dope music edm-my beats.
Finishing: Remind again abt the fear, the silent, and thinking. But everybody seem forgot it because of the car radio music distraction before. So at the end everybody choose "sleep" over "faith".

I think with the Car Radio theming of the song is that it represents how when a song is no longer popular, it usually is taken off the radio. I think the car radio taken from HIS Car represents how his bands music was no longer getting played in the radio (well that’s my take on it)

That you knew nothing about the band and picked up on that part of what Tyler struggles with is self-criticism and insecurity (it becomes a whole Thing, he even personifies it as a character in later albums) is impressive!
As far as the thinking equals being alive and the lyric "I will try with every rhyme to come across that I am dying to let you know you need to try to think" - the band covers a lot of deep feelings and darkness, but their kinda tagline or sign off was/is "stay alive". A few of their other songs talk about turning your focus from these extensional questions to music and to find purpose and meaning there.
And the hair: cycles are a big theme for them, that everything happens repeatedly with no real defined start or end.
I'm so glad this popped up in my suggested videos, you've got a new subscriber and welcome to the twenty one pilots fandom! You'll never run out of content from them, the lore goes deeper than we know and once you've gone down the rabbit hole you'll be down there for awhile!

For me, it speaks to parts of me that I have always thought were broken...a monster inside. I recently have been diagnosed as AuDHD...a little late in life. With all of the pain and sadness without anything but the voices in my head, the intrusive though comes in that I could just pull the steering wheel. The fact I don't proves to those voices that I am stronger than they are and if I keep going I will work it out, so sometimes now I just sit in silence.

This is my first exposure to your content and honestly I have so much to say that it could be a whole video on its own. I believe that there's a symbolism of him being on the brink, shaving his head, then he puts on the mask, performs for people who are just like him, then he feels alright knowing that he's not alone. I think it would be fascinating for you to listen to their discography. You can definitely see the points where Tyler actually got help because there is a dramatic shift in the music. Their most recent album is much lighter and more poppy. Where a lot of the first two major label releases were much darker. The song Migraine from the same album has a line that says, "It's all about my forehead and how it is a door that holds back contents that make Pandora's box contents look nonviolent." So throughout their discography you can really track Tyler Joseph's growth and coping mechanisms as he ages and navigates his musical career.

When I was a teenager I grew my hair out because it was the grunge thing to do and a sign of rebellion. This is the mid 90s so times were a bit different back then. I went through some breakups, trouble at school, "friends" abandoning you, depression, anxiety, trouble at home, etc.
Me and my mom weren't getting along. I was a blooming teenager and my mom was going through menapause. Bad combo.
After months of bickering over little things, I asked her one day to cut my hair. I didn't go full bald but it was much much shorter than it was. We talked for about an hour while she was cutting my hair. I cried. She cried. We kinda forgave each other for bickering and things were good after that.
It's surprising what a haircut can achieve if you hadn't had one for about two years. It feels like the weight of the world was lifted. I felt happier, more outgoing and did better in school and my friends.
CUtting your hair or shaving your beard can give yo a different perspective on life because the face you see in the mirror is different and you feel different. It's like a reset button.

Please react to Migraine and Friend Please by Twenty One Pilots. I think there's something to be said about the crowd surfing. Maybe being with the crowd...together with the crowd...they helped him fet back to the stage...safe. maybe the hair grown back is an indication that he is whole again, at least for the moment. I also thought that pulling the steering wheel was not to drive it off the road but just an indication of the level of frustration he is feeling. But that's the beauty of music. We can interpret it in our own way.

Ima say the thing with the hair at the end is because (from my experience) when your upset it feels good to make drastic changes such as bangs or shaving bald because when your upset and existential crisising you feel like you are taking control and when he does that he is in control but then at the end he no longer is in control
