    Hardest single 1 day MTB race in America is Marji Gesick in Michigan. 105 miles and 12k ft of climbing and 90% singletrack in the UP of Michigan. Their modo is doing hard things, pushing limits and Finish what you start. Marji hsa 60% DNF rate and most pro's that complete Leadville in 6 hrs, takes them 10hrs for Marji. Leadville is tough race as well due to the elevation, weather, and length. I am attempting the Marji in September this year for the first time. Good Luck on the race!! Friend on mine racing Leadville for the 9th year in a row.

    Getting under 9 hours from the back at Leadville is dam near impossible. Your only chance is to absolutely hammer the first 3 miles out of town to where the single track starts otherwise you will be pinned behind hundreds of people on that first climb. It sounds crazy to start a 100 mile race with a 3 mile sprint but it's the only way to get out in front. I'll be rooting for you!

      They have wave starts nowadays. Do not take the advice of going out hard. If you go into the red at that altitude, you will not finish. Steady at YOUR all day pace is the only way to go. That way, you will spend the day passing all the riders that went out hard and blew up.

    So, what sport does this guy play?

  • @ilanpi
    @ilanpi ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Crossfit incorrectly states that their championship are "world's fittest." That is obviously false if you consider endurance as fitness, because that is evaluated with relative VO2 Max. Given their weight, which is comparable with Olympic rowers who have a relative VO2 Max of about 60, I would estimate it to be in the 60's (Olympic rowers have the highest absolute VO2 Max, but weigh 100+kg). The top male endurance athletes are in the 90's (cross country skiers) with cyclists just behind in the low 90's and 80's. Any male professional cyclist has a higher VO2 Max than these Crossfit athletes, not to mention the top women cyclists and runners. I also did a comparison of top Crossfit athlete published mile times with the 1500m times of Olympic decathletes. When adjusted for the 109m difference, the fastest Crossfit athlete is about 30 seconds slower than the slowest 1500m Decathlete in the Olympic games.

    • @CFProjectMayhem
      @CFProjectMayhem  ปีที่แล้ว

      This argument has only taken into account endurance. The reason CrossFit claims the champion as the world's fittest is because in theory that athlete can be better at endurance tests than a weightlifter or gymnast, but better at weightlifting and gymnastics than an endurance athlete. The point is to be really good at everything, but not to specialize in anything. Hopefully that clears things up.

    • @ilanpi
      @ilanpi ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CFProjectMayhem No it does not clear things up. Endurance is a very important aspect of fitness and it is evaluated across different disciplines by relative VO2 Max. The fact that Crossfit champions have low VO2 Max as compared to amateur cyclists, runners and cross country skiers implies that their endurance is subpar and thus cannot in any way be considered "The fittest on Earth." VO2 Max has been used for decades as an objectively verifiable comparison among different sports, but now Crossfit claims that they are fitter than all other athletes without giving any objective measure for comparison. Crossfit should provide an objective measure for comparison to back up their claim of "fittest on Earth."

    • @thejohnhend
      @thejohnhend 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      With that rationalization Eliud Kipchoge should be the worlds fittest but a crossfitter would be able to lift 2-3 times what Eliud could but Eliud can’t run a marathon 2-3 times faster than a crossfitter. Plus marathon runners tend to age faster so the muscle benefit is more than just aesthetics. Just my humble opinion

    I've been a cyclist for 20 years, several 100's under my belt. Based on this video, he may finish, but his emotions and body are going to be taxed heavily. Cycling is not crossfit, it's pain management for 9+ consistent hours, mechanical failures, injuries and less muscle and more lungs. He has a lot of muscle to carry up and down that mountain. He needs to drop some weights and spend a lot more time in the saddle. Has anyone ever noticed how skinny cyclists are? Squatting 405 pounds is very different than turning the granny gears on a steep climb. 😢

    • @ilanpi
      @ilanpi ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a Leadville training website that states that if your FTP/(weight in kg) is 3.0, then you can go under 12 hours on a good day. Since he weighs about 90kg, that would mean an FTP of 270W, which is certainly what he has now. It also says sub 9 hours on a perfect day with 4.0, which would be 360W for him. Unclear whether he is at that level. Search for "Leadville FTP."

    • @HonorableRepSantana
      @HonorableRepSantana ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@ilanpi like I said I wish him all the luck in the world and I hope he finishes the race. Endurance racing at that level is very different that sudden bursts of power like crossfit. Doing the Murph challenge is nothing like a high altitude race. 45 minutes versus 9 hours of non stop physical activity at a high heart rate is no joke. Intense suffering for a prolonged period of time is very different than squatting, deadlifting and jumping rope. Not to mention the altitude, exhaustion and the breakdown of motor skills when oxygen isn't flowing through your system, meal program to restore calories is or is not correct, emotional and mental breakdowns, bike mechanical breakdowns. great analysis on your part.

    • @markwolfgang7407
      @markwolfgang7407 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      100% 2.5 hours is not a long ride. We do 6+ hour rides as long rides in preparation for Leadville. I’m talking at altitude with over 7k feet on the ride

    • @ilanpi
      @ilanpi ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I just realized that the endurance of Crossfit athletes can be quantified by their performance on the Concept 2 rowing machine. In the 2018 Crossfit games, the winner of the half marathon had a pace of 1:53 per 500m. According to the Concept 2 website, that translates to 242 Watts. This took 1 hour 27 minutes, so the FTP is actually higher but certainly under 300W. Rich Froning was second in that half marathon. Note that they regularly train on the rowing machine and are therefore familiar with its technical demands. Assuming an FTP of 300 and bodyweight 90kg, that gives a ratio of 3.3. Standard tables show that this corresponds to Category 4 US amateur male bike racers. There are 5 categories with 5 the beginners, 3 the average and 1 a US elite, still generally below Tour de France participants. Froning therefore likely has less long term power to weight ratio than average amateur male bike racers. Power/weight is crucial for events with a lot of climbing, as is the case for the Leadville 100. The power/weight estimates for Leadville indicate that finishing in under 12 hours is already problematic for a value of 3.3. It would be interesting to test Froning for FTP and VO2 Max to find out the actual values.
