  • The Bash Guard Sport is one of the most iconic bikes in early Mid School BMX history. Before getting started on the restoration, we take a closer look at the history of this iconic model from Haro Bikes, and explore why I think it is one of the most influential BMX bikes from the early 1990's.
We touch on how the Haro Sport came to be part of the line in the early 80's, its development as a progressive ramp, park, and street bike, and look at how the emergence of mid school freestyle lead to the launch of the iconic "Bash Guard" models we know and love from the early 90's.
This is the first episode in a 4 part series that will cover the restoration of a survivor condition 1991 Haro "Bash Guard" Sport BMX bike.
    Chapters:
    0:00 Intro
1:18 Origins of the Haro Sport BMX
2:45 The birth of Mid School BMX
    3:15 The bash guard era
3:45 The first “bash guard” Haro Sport
4:34 The bash guard Sport officially launches
5:36 Matt Hoffman and the Haro Sport
6:30 The end of the Haro Sport era

Nicely done Jonathan! Looking forward to this. After meeting Matt Sully and his Haros, I came away with new found fondness for these early midschool Haros.

Thanks Matt! Haro is one of those brands that people tend to drift away from as they get deeper into BMX, but their history is unrivalled and they have played a huge part in all eras of BMX. Glad you enjoyed it!

If you rode a Sport or a Master in my opinion I think the master & especially the Team Master was the bike that you wanted , it was the over all bike for vert , street & flatland & haro,s back then were heavy , some maxing out at 44 pounds & people would shave weight by losing parts off of them , I had a FSX , Sport , Team Master , Air Master & Master , all were very heavy all with front & back breaks & all four pegs .

Back in the days of mid-school Haro,s in my opinion the Team Master was the top ranking Haro , you couldn’t get better than that when it came to Haro bicycles . The FST & the FSX were entry level Haro,s , then came the Sport , The Team Sport mid level Haro,s , then the Air Master entry-level pro bicycle , then the Master & Team Master , top of the top pro level , not including any group one bicycles just because they were strictly racing . The Team Master any of them were the best of Haro bicycles , you couldn’t get a better bike than that . Over the years back when I rode my first Haro was the 1987 Team Sport , the 1988 FSX , the 1989 Team Master with the bash guard in black , the 1990 Master with the flat bottom bash guard / grey with purple specks & mother of pearl over spray , & the 1992 Air Master / neon red . I to this day still own all of these bikes , they are from my childhood & over the years I have put the same parts on every one of them , the only thing that’s different with them is the frame & fork every part on each bike is the same down to the cranks , grips , seat , headset , rims everything & don’t get me wrong all of them are different beast & ride differently , just because they have the same parts on them don’t make them the same bike when it comes down to it , the frame & forks play a big part & difference in each bike & how they ride , hell you can blindfold me & let me ride each bike & by the way that they ride I can tell you which bike I’m on , I know the feel of each bike by how they ride .

Awesome that you still own all of your old bikes. I wish I could track down some of my old ones.

My 1989 sport was stolen too. "it's just a bike" he said. "a 1000 bike my mom said. it's almost grand theft auto."

I had a haro master, too heavy. had a hairline crack on the down-tube...bought a 89 sport...added my own bashguard
I did a no-handed wall fakie on that thing at the skate park in Rockville, IL in 1990.
my favor ride ever. i had peregrins, bashguard, pitbull front/rear, odyssey gyro, GT four-piece bars, GT meat mallet neck.
evert week, i completely dissembled it and detailed i.
    then someone stole it.
    i am still heartbroken.
yeah i'm only 5-8 that thing was long.

I used it all day, every day. How do you not want structural reinforcement?
