  • Laos and Thailand - same same, but different. They're neighbours, but as you'll see in this video they're not as same same as you might think.

It’s was hours of watching useless videos trying to figure out some of the differences between the two countries that I was looking for until I saw your video. Heather, you kept it straight to the point, interesting and funny. Thank you sorry to say you have a new fan and possibly stocker. 🥰🥰

My personal views: The main difference between Laos and Thailand is what's the right word in English -political and economic basis/infrastructure, while their social and cultural substance is similar in most aspects..

Agree. Lao was in the Soviet block until the Soviet Union ended in 1991. Thailand is/ was in the American/capitalist block. That had consequences for the cultural development of Lao people on both side of the borders and for Lao and Thai people in general.

good observation but I would like to point one thing. economy of Thailand depend on exported manufactured goods (vehicle, machinery and equipment, processed food) it's account for 70% of GDP while tourism contribute only 9-12% of GDP in 2019 at peak of tourism before covid (it's huge but not majority of GDP)

Of course The Tiew was quite a midget. I am half American, Laotian. Number 1 Lao people pay attention to work.Rule 2 Lao people usually say hello when they meet. Whether we've met or never met Number 3 in Laos, the weather is very fresh if you come. Today will be the best because there will be fog too.

DaSoggyWaffle, Major difference real Thai food is no where near spicy. Lao food is notoriously HOT, hottest cuisine in all of Southeast Asia as a whole. The popularity of Thai food receiving the “distinction” of being spicy 🌶 is due to Lao food (Isan) being hidden under the Thai umbrella term. Also, pay attention to the two languages and it’s very noticeable how different they can be. Lao can understand Thai without too much difficulty, but most native Thai speakers struggle. Some say it’s because Thai is better exposed and this is true to some extent, but the real truth is because Lao is actually an older language. Thai is a creole mixed language, just like Vietnamese is. The root basis of modern Standard Central Thai is Lao-Tai (all Tai people’s in ancient times used to all call themselves Lao by the way) mixed with Mon-Khmer. You can clearly hear the Mon-Khmer influences by how Thais roll their Rs and the heavy use that is predominantly absent in Lao (r sounds become L, H or W sounds).

@@ferdinandsy7366 Possible but not very likely. Way more likely is that you saw the flag of the Lao Revolutionary People's Party. That is officially a Marxist-Leninist party. But Lao is not communist. In fact not a single country in the world ever claimed to be communist and sometimes the theory (and symbols) might also (sometimes slightly, sometimes more) be different from the reality.
