It's true that experienced framers can drive a nail w/2 blows: one blow to set the nail, one blow to drive it home. They typically use a 16 oz (or more) framing hammer and many of them blow out their elbows around 20 years in, also their wrists (using a hammer is mostly wrist action). But as another viewer commented, most framers use nail guns these days, using their hammers mostly to bang pieces of wood into alignment/place before nailing it in w/a gun. Also, screws are used a lot more these days over nails, as nails can and do pull out, screws do not. And I agree w/many others who commented here that walls and roof framing members should be 16" on center (OC) due to both snow (gravity "live" load) and wind (lateral load). This coming from an architect w/nearly 50 yrs experience who started her career in civil/structural engineering. Great video, as always. Stay warm out there! If you need any help w/drawings or figuring out how to frame stuff, let me know, more than happy to help and given that I am semi-retired, it's easy for me to find the time. If you provide me w/exact dimensions of your cabin addition, I can put them into AutoCAD and provide you with fully dimensioned schematics for that front wall and your roof, easy peasy (for me, hahaha).
The first video I look for on Sunday mornings. I really love this channel. And as a woman, when you included women in your statement about construction workers working in the cold, I knew I was following the right guy ❤
You know what I hate about your videos, Jay? THEY END! I could watch you do what you do for hours and hours. I almost wish I'd never seen your channel until today so I could binge-watch all of them from the start. You're doing great; I love everything you've done to that cabin so far. And if you have to do it wrong to learn how to do it right, that's okay. In the end, it WILL be right. Because I know you won't settle for anything other than perfect. (Or as perfect as humanly possible.) Thanks for another great video, Jay. I can hardly wait for the next one!
Looks good Jay. One tip, give the opening for the windows an extra 1/2" on both the length and width This allows to level the window and room to foam insulate around the windows

Hi Jay. As far as your Mr. Buddy heater I have had the same problem with mine. Number one ... when propane gets that cold it does not perform well. Number two ... the flame from the pilot is not strong enough to satisfy the thermocouple (the metal tube in the pilot flame). I found a workaround by removing the back of the heater to get to the pressure regulator. From there I was able to increase the gas pressure to the heater fr om the tank. This created a stronger pilot flame and better heater performance. Good luck my friend and know that I enjoy your adventures.
It’s because the pressure drops in the tank and the propane within the tank starts to turn into liquid gas which happens at really cold temperatures either warm the tank up or turn it upside down (works for gas cookers as well but they have to be made for lpg use something like the optimus Nova Expedition cooker or similar) or use special winter gas it contains more butane and doesn’t turn into liquid as fast but smells more
Propane in a tank is always mostly liquid and it evaporates as needed. At such low temperatures rhe vapour pressure and evaporation rate will be low. It will also cool further as it evaporates during use. The pilot flame is for ignition of the main burner but also to heat a thermally atuated safety valve. This valve shuts off gas flow if the pilot flame is extinguished forany reason. At such low temperatures the gas pressure and heat emitted by the pilot flame will be less than normal and you will need to hold the pilot starter down much longer than normal if it even ignites. It is dangerous to adjust the pressure regulator as it will then overfuel the heater once the room warms up. Best to use woodstove for the initial warmup and then propane for a quick boost when you need it.
@@JamesV-my9uh I adjusted my regulator as a retired heating technician. It did not take much adjustment to increase the pilot flame. I suspect that many of these heaters are working under-pressured right from the manufacturer. There is no way to adjust the thermocoupling into the flame further. My heater now works well in all temperature ranges.
I personally have to draw out all my building plans. Take your time and draw out that front wall with measurements, get detailed with your rough openings for your windows and all stud measurements you need. It makes it so much easier when it's time to cut your lumber and get it all nailed up. Good luck!
Fantastic video Jay! You're doing a great job figuring everything out and once it's completed you'll be able to sit back and say I did this myself. You're never too old to learn new tricks. As always I'm looking forward to the next video. Cheers
My,my,sure is cold where you are!!And look at you just outside building away! You are a legend. First thing I do Sunday morning, grab a coffee and sit back in my warm house and watch Jay hard at work!!!🙂🙂
Jay you are just so fun to hang out with. My wife and daughters and I had your videos on over the holiday break and they just had a blast. Thank you for always being cool and awesome!! And great job with the framing!!
Suggestion…as you travel to your cabin, carry your small propane bottle inside your coat. Propane does not do well in cold temperatures. Your body heat might help it perform better when you arrive and use your Mr. Heater Buddy.
Yeah Mr. Buddy’s will not run well in super cold, propane is the problem. They are great overall, just not in super cold area. I learned this from post10. ❣️🍀
I use one on my screen/ covered porch in winter and have learned from experience in the cold i keep a blanket wrapped around it all winter, this keeps it cranking everytime.
Love your videos and you continuing to learn. In the US 24" OC is for roof trusses and interior non load bearing walls, exterior and load bearing should be 16" OC.
Hey Jay, love your videos here in 🇬🇧 If you’re unsure about the placement of windows on the front wall, construct the frame using screws, so if something goes wrong you can easily remove the screws and make adjustments
Awesome sunset and moon footage and I can’t believe how fast you got those walls up in those temperatures! Can’t wait to see the finished addition on the cabin! Great video! 👏🏻🇨🇦
me to, would be an interesting experiment to see whether the diesel heaters run once it ( and the diesel ) was left there for a week in the cabin at - 20 F 🤔
You never disappoint, Jay. Hope you had a great Christmas and I wish you Gods richest Blessing for 2025 and the channel will grow significantly. Much love from Ireland.
I put together 6 of those plastic shelving units this weekend and you would’ve thought I conquered Everest. Then I watch your vid and am put in my rightful place! LOL. Love watching you learn and grow more confident in your building projects. Gives me confidence to do stuff like put together plastic shelves 😂
You’re very right. But I do need them in my basement because it’s flooded twice. Although I’ve installed a French drain and a sump (with a marine battery backup), I don’t want anything on the floor in there. Definitely a very different use than Jay’s, but I hear you and don’t disagree.
Great video Jay. I’ve always found when I’m looking at building something and I’m not too sure how to put it together, I draw it out on paper and afterwards if it’s what I want I’ll have a small blueprint of the build to have for reference. Stay warm up there cheers.
Oh my goodness Jay!!! I was telling you to go inside to warm up!!! I was worried… But you did good!! Liked the shelves in the shed! Good job! Hello to crystal! Stay warm😱🌡️❤️
Jay, I have been watching your channel off and on for about a year. I subbed right around the time you released the recap video at the end of last winter season. My 6 year old daughter has started watching with me and she gets really excited when I tell her you posted a new "camping video" as she calls them. Thank you for the great content and helping me make memories that will last a life time with my kids. much love and keep up the great work.
I am complaining about it being 28° F here in North Carolina this weekend! You shame me, sir. I love seeing the snow and watching you work on your little cabin in the woods. Can't wait to see what comes next.
Great job Jay, draw the front wall on paper and then follow the instructions. What is the rough opening of your windows? You know what they say, "Plan your work, Work your plan". You can do it! And if you make a mistake just learn from it and now put it on the life skills resume. Enjoy
Maybe use sill gasket on bottom plates and on wall studs against the OSB of the existing cabin wall. It will make a seal for any gaps in material mating surfaces.
Nice editing this week. Crisp B roll and mic spot on. That ringing sound is the cold and bad temper on the forge. We used to call those dinner bells. Still works fine banging spikes
We live in Illinois/USA. We always say we can tell when it gets really cold here...when the snow creaks and snaps. But, it doesn't get as cold here as what you deal with up there, Jay!
Perfect construction, the screw grabs the wood and the nail has a high shear factor. Living in Canada, you know just how cold it is by the sound of the snow when you walk on it, and that is damn cold lol.
Jay your enthusiasm and excitement for such things as improving your construction skills or a Buddy heater in the outhouse is awesome! I slept out in the Alberta Rockies ice camping this weekend and couldn’t wait to get back and catch up on your channel!
Hi Jay great video once again...run a 2/8 or a 2/10 on the bottom of the cabin where your new floor meets the existing cabin....it will keep those beams from twisting and fill in that gap....👍👍😎
25:47 You hit the nail on the head (no pun intended) on why I LOVE winter camping. No BUGS, no bears. And for me because I camp a lot on public land, there's almost no people. And it's great for when you're working because chances are you can take a layer off once you get too hot; if you get cold, just go inside and sit next to the wood stove. For me it's perfect
Jay is one tough ombré!!!! He reads the cold weather warning and then says let’s get back at it and goes back outside. You are doing awesome by yourself! Great to see Chrystal up there with you Jay. She’s gotta love the improvements you have made and you are doing. Good luck with front wall. I know you will get it done just like you always do. Stay safe and keep warm Jay!!! Epic videos!!!
Well done Jay it's all coming together! Hope you figure it all out & it all works out! As for a window as long as its all studded out & reinforced with batons it should all be sturdy & secure enough!
I have a difficult driveway but a local propane company said they couldn’t deliver yearly contacted another company and they work with me back up driveway but able to turnaround to go down and they come during the winter find a company that will work with you . Just got a supply of propane and it’s such a relief ❤
Awesome Video Jay ! While your framing the side walls at 24oc. I’d suggest 12” o’c for the front wall. You will need to factor in snow load and using 2x4 will require additional studs. 2x10 sandwich headers with 1/2” plywood would be a bare minimum.
I turned up the sound to watch this one , hearing the snow crunching under your feet while walking made me get on another layer of clothing , now I am all bundled up and still inside my warm cozy house .
A+ for your drive and effort! You are going to pull together an outstanding addition just by the mere fact that you are teachable and willing put the work in. Give yourself more credit! Love the heated outhouse!! Can’t wait for more.
glad youre still keeping it real, so many outdoor youtubers have become just become content creaters, just filling space and paid ads to poromote. the story is the best part of why we watch.
Hey Jay. I know I have said it before, but again I am jealous of your cold weather! Here in Texas, today, 68 degrees and wearing shorts. Cold weather coming, but I love your videos and seeing the beautiful snow. You have progressed so much over the years. BRAVO!!!!!
It is wonderful that you are willing to try the new build. You don't need to worry about making mistakes; they can be corrected. You are brave to work in that cold. I am looking forward to seeing the extension progress. Until next time, all the best.
Hi, long time sub from Norway here. I love your videos, but I would really like to see more of your travel to and from the cabin and tents as well (both summer and winter). I am really fascinated by the ice road and would love to see how you enter the lake and your drive out.
Sir I applaud you and your attitude about the cold, I grew up in Chicago and hated the severe cold. I liked the cold I could still do stuff in. This cold would not be fun. Your attitude think is what makes this cold “fun”
Jay When it is that cold you need to hold the pilot light button down for 3 or 4 minutes to keep the pilot light burning until the iginiter warms up. I was having the same problem with gas heater in garage. A friend of mine who works construction taught me and explained in great detail.
I just can't stop smiling at your approach to learning new skills and your little laugh when thinking about how on earth you're going to solve new problems 😊 Go, Jay!!! 💪💪
Dude, your framing sq thin leaf is 16in as well as 1+1/2. The long leaf is 24in and 2in wide, I’ve set out many a stud wall. I would strongly advise you screw everything as it’s much easier to undo if you make a mistake. Search Larry Haun on TH-cam - there are 3 videos covering everything you’ll need to know from floor through walls (including setting out for window openings) right up to trusses and tying in all roof components. Love your videos man 👍🏻
Hy Jay when you build your wall add a extra stud the last stud making a L so when you put up your next wall you we’ll have a bigger area to nail to also 16” O/C would be a good idea. Keep up the great work your doing fine lots of heart 😀🇨🇦
I want you to know how inspiring I found your video. I’m right about where you are in terms of building skills. There is plenty I can build and have built but the idea of a full wall with windows would be intimidating. To see you be open and cognizant of your limitations and fears and then decide to press ahead was just so great. You didn’t deny or dismiss those limitations or fears, you accepted them as reality and made a conscious decision to keep going. Thank you so much for this video. Best of luck to you.
Hats off , most pple will never know the real challenge of doing this magnitude of work in the cold. Ive done off grid in the-30 c range , it's no joke. Gets my support
Jay your cabin is going to be 🔥 and you're going to be great at doing it. You n Crystal are going to have a phenomenal cabin😊😊. It was nice to catch a glimpse of her and yals pupper😅😅Tyfs God bless you
I was too cold to take my dog for a walk yesterday at -30c , this guy is building a fkn wall in the middle of nowhere, what a legend
In your defense, -30 is cold for the doggos feet!
I didn't go to run outside today because it's +5c. I couldn't imagine living anywhere it gets under -10c.
Nothing is better to heat you up than old faithful . Look at that fire roar in the wood stove .
Went for my fat bike ride this afternoon, chillin at -12°
I like cold better than (too)hot.
I live in the tropics, anything under +20°c and I'm cold 😂

Way to go Jay. You were right. Definitely no flies. Love this channel
Loved the “flushing toilet sound” as you left the outhouse.
I had to go back and listen again to make sure I heard that right😂
Put some "Sea Foam" in your gas. Great for old gas and cold starts. Canadian Tire
I use it in my generator, snow blower, snow machine. Great stuff
You used my suggestion. Awesome heated outhouse. Great video

This is the best cold cabin channel on TH-cam. Thanks Jay.
I absolutely love how those viewers who have the knowledge are so invested in this build giving out advice.

Your propane tank maybe too cold. I agree with @Tburd7950
Also before you leave your camp you should load up your wood stove so it's the first thing you do.

I'm absolutely loving the content. And it's great to see you have over a quarter of a million subscribers. 🎉🎉🎉😂😅😊
now that is cold! A tip is to allways fill the cabin with firewood before you leave, also load the oven so that its ready.

I just got back from 4 days in the woods building my cabin, to then watch this guy build his cabin.
Great tip!
This is a great channel, pleasure to watch and you are absolutely on of the best presenters. Keep doing it your way!!
thanks for this kind comment!
For me it's perfect
exactly!
Love the videos and like the honesty. Can't wait to see it when it's done
LMAO @ the flushing toilet sound.
Yes that got me
Jay - your laugh is great. You constantly make me laugh when you do - which is a lot! Thanks for being so uplifting.
Thanks Jay... definently is cold up there 😮 THANKS for sharing your progress. 👍
Looking good. Great progress. Be safe on the bitter cold. Love the heated outhouse
Thumbs up on the storage shed! Looks great
My husband and I love watching you from Newfoundland!
Glad to see Crystal make an appearance. Another great video glad to see the progress.
Hey Jay. I know I have said it before, but again I am jealous of your cold weather! Here in Texas, today, 68 degrees and wearing shorts. Cold weather coming, but I love your videos and seeing the beautiful snow. You have progressed so much over the years. BRAVO!!!!!
you wont be jealous long if you experience it.
@@daver3778I just want a cold winter. Christmas was warm. December was warm.
Kind of like you won't be jealous if you experience the summer heat in Texas! @@daver3778
It is wonderful that you are willing to try the new build. You don't need to worry about making mistakes; they can be corrected. You are brave to work in that cold. I am looking forward to seeing the extension progress. Until next time, all the best.
Everything looking awesome Jay 👍
Hi, long time sub from Norway here.
I love your videos, but I would really like to see more of your travel to and from the cabin and tents as well (both summer and winter). I am really fascinated by the ice road and would love to see how you enter the lake and your drive out.
Be safe with the freezing weather miss you cooking a good meal till next time love from Michigan ❤
Another great video, Jay! You’re a beast!
Sir I applaud you and your attitude about the cold, I grew up in Chicago and hated the severe cold. I liked the cold I could still do stuff in. This cold would not be fun. Your attitude think is what makes this cold “fun”
New or not, seeing that snowmachine crank over and start so easily, after that long, those temps? Pretty nice
Jay When it is that cold you need to hold the pilot light button down for 3 or 4 minutes to keep the pilot light burning until the iginiter warms up. I was having the same problem with gas heater in garage. A friend of mine who works construction taught me and explained in great detail.
Yup was just gonna say that,my buddy heater does that whenever its cold i have to hold the pilot down 3-4 minutes
Great information!👍🏅
The propane becomes more like a liquid that cold. Pressure is poor as well.
I just can't stop smiling at your approach to learning new skills and your little laugh when thinking about how on earth you're going to solve new problems 😊
Go, Jay!!!
Love your videos man 👍🏻
I love the music at the end of the video. Very soothing….
You are so awesome!! We appreciate you and your content so much. Thank you!!
Hy Jay when you build your wall add a extra stud the last stud making a L so when you put up your next wall you we’ll have a bigger area to nail to also 16” O/C would be a good idea. Keep up the great work your doing fine lots of heart 😀🇨🇦
The power cord idea was pretty cool
It was nice to catch a glimpse of her and yals pupper😅😅Tyfs God bless you
amazing video jay incredible stuff
