I grew up watching Emergency here in Australia and I was in my teens. It was an era where we didn’t go looking for mistakes but enjoyed what we enjoyed 100%. Emergency on the television meant we all sat together and watched in the lounge room. I think Emergency was a great show and I don’t care about the mistakes because it bought something to us that is sadly missing in today’s world.
That it did-- it's far more worth it on DVD than Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
I hear that Gage and DeSoto are still great friends. As a retired fireman I've seen many bloopers but who cares, great show.
They are BEST friends. Its amazing and the show is where they met. Search out Randolph Mantooth, it's amazing what this show did.
If by that you mean the portrayers (Mantooth and Tighe respectively), then yes, that is true.
I became I volunteer firefighter because of this show. I also use the Emergency tones sound, for the ring tone, for my doctor's. 😁
FYI: Dr. Joe Early on the show ( Bobby Troup ), is the writer to the song ' Route 66 ' . He was also married to Dixie the head nurse on the show. : ) ~
Julie London played Dixie. Both she and Bobby (Dr. Early) were incredibly talented musicians. Her rendition of CRY ME A RIVER is superlative.

The reason the “vents” aren’t there in the shot showing the actors driving along is because it’s not the same year of truck .Obviously the camera view from the inside was filmed before they went to a newer model (72 I think) .The other shot is the previous model (at least 67 to 70 ish)
I’m a big Mopar guy, the front on view is a 71 on Lifestyle Dodge pickup, the inside out is a 1970 and prior Dodge truck! I notice tons of car inconsistencies in 1960-1980’s tv shows. Wrong starter sounds etc. Dukes of Hazzard was notorious for switching brands of cop cars, mopar cars most of the times but occasionally the outside chase scenes switched to AMC Matadors! It’s kinda funny to car people!
I was told from a good friends father who is a retired LA County Captian. He said those driving scenes early in the Show was a Ford. It was a reserve unit in the County fleet. Until the Show could get another dodge. He also said the only dodge that he saw was the actual squad. In a lot of moving shots you see the Ford and open cab Crown engine
Most emergency vehicles don't have rear view mirrors because the body of the apparatus normally block the back window, so they're useless.

Randy said that the studio purchased 1 brand new dodge pickup for the show and had it specked out there wasnt gonna be any replacements so it was up to them to keep it in perfect nic for the duration of the show and he said they worked hard to keep it running and damage free
One of my favorite shows as a kid.
I once saw them respond in daylight and upon returning from a commercial break the scene continued but now it was nighttime. Wow! Talk about a long run.

They are pretty minor.
Lots of old shows used stock footage even other shows stock footage. It is kind of fun to find these things, but i dont consider them bloopers or significant.

The one that always got me was the night alarms. The same radio dispatch sound effects were used for night scenes as for day scenes. But they would have been able to mute the station radio at night until their tone pair was detected by their decoder. So for those night alarms when everyone was sleeping, the first thing you should have heard was the horn going off, not the tones right before it.
The alarm heard on Emergency! was created by the production crew. They took the tones from station 127 amplified them and and added the horn. In a real LACoFD station all they heard were horns several times before the dispatch.
Despite the minor inconsistencies with the different shots described, Emergency! was a very realistic show which helped popularize the use of paramedics among the nation's army of first responders. I find it interesting that as time went on in real life, one now generally finds paramedics manning ambulances as opposed to dedicated fire rescue squads. It makes more sense as there are probably relatively few daring rescues performed by practicing paramedics than were often dramatized in the show. Of course the design of ambulances has evolved from the older Cadillac wagon style vehicles to the modern van type that allow more room for equipment and for the paramedics to work to stabilize patients during the trip to the hospital. Hats off to Jack Webb for creating a great drama show that also undoubtedly saved many lives.
My favorite oddity is that Reed and Malloy would sometimes be seen as actual characters in "Emergency!" Yet there was one episode where the men at Station 51 were actually watching "Adam-12," but were interrupted by an alarm. Gage is then obsessed with how the episode ended.

It’s a little bit more complicated then that.
1. Hood vents- the dodge never had the vents. Some fords used by lacfd had the vents.
2. Rear view mirror- the lacfd shops removed the mirror has they had the rear cargo box and would be useless. The older squads had a rear cargo box but the older ones the box was slightly lower and you could see agin slightly out the rear view mirror. So they used an older squad running code to to film the stock footage.
One other thing the vents aren't for cooling. The hood vents are purely for looks, a design characteristic of the 60's model Dodge truck. The vents by the windshield (70"s model Dodge) are intake vents for the the heater/A.C. blower motor, and has nothing to do with it being a fire truck.
There one long shot in this clip (4:25) of an older 1970 Dodge D200 or D300 Fire squad. Dome older 1960's Dodges had vented hoods, but the one in the clip has a 1970 grille.

I was a kid in southern California when this show was on. I dreamed of being a firefighter. Years later as a firefighter/ paramedic in northern California, I was on a strike team that got stationed at station "51" it was a dream come true. Also, about the show, if you notice, a lot of times they leave the station and turn left, well, right across the street from station 127 was a refinery, the way they turned only went a few hundred yards. Also, in the dorms every bed had a scba next to it in case of a leak or explosion across the street.

@@gofgwoodworking Oh, I see now. I thought you were on the strike team in Northern California. I was a dispatcher in the Sacramento area back in the 80's and 90's and Florin Fire's stations are all 50 series, including a station 51.

I'm familiar with those areas too.
The driver would have relied on his side view mirrors, a rear view mirror would have only reflected the back of the truck because of the height of the truck.

The red VW belonged to James Page. A real LA Paramedic who was a consultant to the show and one of the pioneers of EMS.

With regard to the rear view mirror and the hood vents, there were indeed two trucks. They did not switch between the trucks so that you could hear the guys talking. The first truck was replaced. It was an older truck and, in addition to the hood vents, the biggest difference was that it had a single revolving red light on the cab roof. The newer truck had a light bar. Because they re-used stock footage, you sometimes saw the older truck, even though it had been replaced.
Exactly. This was common practice to use stock footage in the 70s.

I thought the real reason there was no rear view mirror was from a line in the 1976 movie "The Gumball Rally." Franco said the first rule of Italian driving is "what's behind me is not important." 😉

I FINALLY found “Emergency!” just yesterday. METV dropped this show back in 2017. Ever since this, we’ve been trying to find the show with no findings. Until I clicked onto Kodi yesterday and found it. We have been watching it for hours.
I guess this could be a blooper: Gage and Desoto are in an apartment tending to a victim. There is a dog running around the apartment, at one point in the background of the scene, the dog runs head first into the closed patio glass door. Gage looks back at the dog and says "Dumb dog" and continues with the scene. Its a brief shot and unfortunately I don't remember which episode it is in.
"Limelight" in the sixth season had a hyperventilating babysitter, bratty kids, PONG on TV, and a sheepdog that bumped into the glass door.
Randolph Mantooth's voice was off in that episode.
Might also be the “push don’t pull” scene
I laugh my head off everytime I see that heck I start laughing as soon as I see the boys outside cause I know it's coming 🤣
This episode also had DeSoto looking at his left arm to time a pulse on the banysitter.. Only problem is he was not wearing a watch at the time. He played it off very well. In the following shots his watch reappeared.
Its probably been said before that the rearview mirror is removed from most movie cars as to not block the faces of the actors. That said, this one is a utility truck with a box the covers the view out of the rear window. So no mirror would've been fitted. The shot with the mirror is from the first few episodes which featured an older Squad 51 with the previous body design (notice the hood vents in the shot). It may have been filmed with a different vehicle. I do not really consider this a blooper.
A blooper typically consists of the actors messing up and then laughing at eachother and trying over and over to get their lines correct or whatever it is that they are doing until they do it the correct way it was supposed to be said or done depending on what was happening. I honestly don’t consider anything in this video a blooper….
According to the dictionary, a blooper is just an “embarrassing mistake.” Your definition is an assumption
My thought was: What are they hoping to see in the rearview? Is it just so they can pick the hamburger out of their teeth after lunch? A N Y W A Y ... the blooper aspect of this would be switching from one view with mirror to one view without mirror, back and forth, with no evidence that they're switching trucks.
I was a volunteer firefighter during the run of this show. The biggest blooper from nearly every episode is that when they go to fires, they will put on the turnout coat and helmet. Only in one episode do they put on the bunker pants and boots. We also wore hoods and gloves. Also, on the show they wore poly blend pants. You do not want to wear poly blend pants in an actual burning building-that is a bad idea.
Back then many departments, even large progressive departments wore only turnout jackets and helmet during the day. They only wore turnout pants and boots after they went to bed for obvious convienience. I have had burn patients that wore polyester clothes. The cloth melts and adheres to the skin. When removed the skin comes with it.
Just like EMS, the seventies and eighties began a tidal wave of innovation and safety in the fire service. 🚒💨
@@davidweston6653 OUCH!!! I was fortunate in that my FD paid for my gear. They were deathly afraid of lawsuits and preferred paying up front instead of BIG later.

At the time of the show LA City and LA County FD's DIDN'I wear "turnout pants." Not a mistake, real.
Great work as usual! 👍For me the biggest bloopers on this show were always the calls. Injuries that in real life would be very bloody or very painful, weren't. Women giving birth would never experience much pain, they would just pant a lot and out came a clean and dry baby, with the mother looking no worse for wear. EKG's done with no pads on the chest, yet the readings were always accurate. Despite it all, this was still an amazing and inspiring show. I'm glad it made your list of shows to cover!
The network actually said no blood
That is not a blooper but a real necessity. It would have gotten the censors to pull the show off the air.
Other things, a decade earlier, you wouldn't see a toilet on camera in shows that were set up for kids. Divorce was a no no topic, and for family friendly TV times, husband and wife had to sleep in separate beds.
1970s TV audiences did not have the tolerance for blood as do audiences of today. Networks simply did not allow it. Did you ever see Quincy with blood on his greens after an autopsy?
Yes, there were issues as you say but it was not that much different than other shows unless it was medical shows like "untold stories of the ER" or "I didn't know I was pregnant". It WAS groundbreaking because of the reality of the shows. There were some gafs like the ER scenes where the Bird respirator was cycling way too short a period for a teen or adult. Sometimes they would show the pressure gauge on the respirator and on babies to maybe toddlers and pressures that high would have killed them. Also I believe that It was Jack Webb that was so insistent on the accuracy of the show. All of the stories for the show were from actual calls from the fire department. The same was done by Jack Webb in doing Adam 12. There was however another interesting story BHTS about one of the episodes where the producers and pyrotechnicians went overboard to the point where the houses on either side of the one being burned caught fire. At that point that county or the state banned any more shows in that county which lasted a year.

Thank you for the bloopers 😊 now I see them. I bought a 1971 SeaGrave Engine just because of Emergency. I am restoring her. I love letting kids get in cab. I remember back looking at those great SeaGrave Engine from back east in Fire Engineering magazine. I wanted one so bad. Now I am Mike Stoker driving my baby, 5 speed Transmission, big old Detroit Diesel 8V-71 powering me along to next public event for the Kids to enjoy getting in cab. Even parents are shocked that YES Fire Engine had manual transmission.😊😊😊

There is every chance that any original Sqauds would have had no interior rear view mirror, as all that would have been visible was the front of the compartment box on the back. Cube vans also leave the factory with no internal rear view for the same reason
It's not an error, most shows back then took out the rearview mirror so it wouldn't block any of the shot. Check out most of your 50's, 60's, 70's, and some 80's shows and you will see this was standard practice.
It has nothing to do with what year/make/model the trucks were. There's no mirror because there's no windshield to mount it to on the set truck. They usually remove the windshield for filming because of problems with glare from the multiple light sources and camera angles.
Most trucks don't need the Rear view Mirror as the rear window is blocked by a Box in the Back and the Mirror serves no purpose
Agree the blooper is the presence of the mirror on the forward looking shot.
It’s pretty standard that all trucks are built with rear view mirrors inside the cab from the factory. All the special beds and storage cabinets are installed after they are manufactured by another company. So if the mirror is not there it was taken out buy someone.

When I was a kid, I really did not care about "bloopers" it was about the show and the stories that interested me the most. I thought they writers did a pretty good job of being factual for what the technology was for that time frame on the medical stuff. As a result of this show, someone saved my life when I was 15 years old and choking to death at a berry processing plant where I was working. Let me explain in more detail.
I had severe knee swelling and had tried to swallow two VANQUISH, if anyone remembers that product, those were pills that looked like modern day Tylenol Caplets, only very large. I had a very small throat due to huge tonsils, which were finally removed at age 47. Well, these two pills lodged in my throat, cutting off my airway so that I could not talk, breathe, or swallow. I grabbed by throat with my hands and looked around the lunch room. NONE of the 30 women who were eating lunch with me responded! I tried to swallow water, and it came right back up and so did the Jell-O I tried to swallow. I want to the drinking fountain, and everything came out of my mouth, except the two Vanquish capsules. They were definitely lodged tighter than tight in my throat. It was now at least one minute plus and I was panicking and becoming very dizzy and light headed. I realized I was going to pass out, probably die in a room full of people. I thought about my family and realized no one would know why!! I was not happy.
Suddenly this woman came up to me, she asked me if I needed help. I nodded vigorously, yes. Then she asked me permission to help me, and she asked me if I was choking, as I grabbed my throat, and making the universal sign to her. I nodded yes to all of her questions. She grabbed me and did a modified version of the Heimlich Maneuver. OUT popped those those pills halfway across the room!! Suddenly I could breathe! I was choking a bit, trying to catch my breath, but she saved me from dying. I was a bit lightheaded, so she had me sitting down, with my head between my knees, then sitting upright, breathing. Then I rushed to the bathroom to check my throat for any swelling. Well she followed me, to make sure my throat was not damaged and did not swell shut from damage. WE called my folks at home to make sure everything was okay. After 20 minutes on the phone with my Mom, we realized I was okay.
I will never forget "Virginia"--that was her name. I asked how she learned to do that: She said: "Watching Johnny and Roy on Emergency! I never miss a show." Virginia was probably in her 50's and me just 15, we became fast friends, as we both were of course fellow co-workers and fans of Emergency! She saved my life because of what she learned watching that show.
Three years later, I would take what I learned from watching Emergency! to help treat a bicycle accident victim of just 7 years old, with a severe head injury--and shock saving his life until emergency medical personnel could arrive to take over. He was in bad shape. As he had no idea of who he was, no idea of what had happened to him, he was covered in blood from his injuries. I had to holler for fellow to people who passed me by who refused to get help for me. This was way before cell phones. Finally I got someone to get help from a police officer whom I knew was just parked a mere blocks away around by a building! These people were on bicycles and did not want to get involved. I had to plead with them to help me.
Because of my experiences, I chose the medical field and wound up working in a local hospital ER for almost 10 years, and finally moving on try and finish school to get my RN and worked in Pediatrics and also a Rehab center and in a place that helped Alzheimer's patients. Finally after 17 years in the medical field I developed a life threatening allergy to rubber latex and lost my job at a mere age of 35. I am now 59. I have outlived many others with my diagnosis because of my abilities to treat myself medically at home before the ambulance paramedics arrive to treat me. I feel blessed. I know it stems from having watched Emergency! as a small child!
I am very grateful for this show! Try not to pick it apart too much okay? Randolph Mantootth did such a great job that at the end of the show, he was asked to actually join the real firemen paramedic program! He decided he could do more as a spokesman and actor for the California Paramedics and Fire Department! Kudos to him.

The truck with the mirror and the FAKE vents is a 68 D300 Dodge truck. It was used in the movie and pilot for the TV show. It was replaced with the 1972 D300. It was reused old stock footage. The 72 D300 has what we call the bathtub hood on it. the depressions in the hood fill with water when it rains outside. It was also called the birdbath hood. The original open roof Crown fire truck was replaced by the newer La France unit. All of these units were real LA Fire Dept. vehicles. Squad 51 was put into service after the show on the back lot since they had an onsite FD. It was later sold off. It was purchased once again an it was restored and it's in the LA Fire Dept. Muesum with both the open top Crown and the LaFrance unit.
"You can see how many shots were re-used." And we didn't care. The real bloopers were the EKG diagnoses.
Something I just noticed: the back door. I have noticed that whenever they return to the station, they BACK IN to it. There is a fire station near me, and sometimes when I have driven by it I could see both the front and back doors open. There is a driveway around the station so they can drive straight into it. I just googled it (San Miguel Fire District Station 22) and I see there are two driveways to the back. If you scroll to the east a little bit, you will see the CalFire station. Up Jamacha Road is a little taco shop and I see them in there frequently. I do take the time to thank them for all their work. (CHP and Sheriffs also go there. I give them my appreciation also, especially in this day of defund the police!)
I might add that in the first episode Doctor Bracket went to Sacramento to testify on behalf of paramedics. This show helped get the law passed to train and add paramedics. By the way: What do you call two physicians? Pair of medics! I know, dumb joke!
Not so much bloopers as little technical glitches. Emergency! is still one of the most technically correct TV shows ever made thanks to the major contributions of the technical advisors who actually were LACoFD paramedics at the time. LACoFD insisted that the show represented the department realistically and professionally. I read somewhere once that the red VW Beetle we see parked on the street in so many stock scenes actually belonged to the creator of the show, Robert A. Cinader. KMG 365.
Jack Web was one of the creators & he demanded it be authentic.
Actually the captain of Station 51 in the 1st season was an actual LACFD captain. Plus Mike Stoker was also an actual LACFD firefighter.
Interesting about the VW Beetle. FETV is now televising Adam 12, and it seems like every time they are cruising they pass a Mustang, and also a Beetle once in a while.

Never ever noticed the rearview mirror. I am always busy looking at Johnny and Roy. LOL You can't see anything in a rearview anyway, back of the squad's in the way.
The reason the hood was different, was because they were different year trucks. The Dodge you normally see is a 1972 to 1975 model. The truck with hood vents is a mid to late 60's. You can also tell this because the older trucks had different style wipers. This was because of the stock footage you mentioned. You actually showed a shot in this video of the older truck. It's at 4:25. Also, most trucks destined for utility bodies, didn't come from the factory with a rear view mirror.
Don't forget that the trucks used for the squad are not fire department equipment. The props people bought a similar truck and fabricated what they needed to put on either a pickup or a truck frame. If I remember the county would not let any of the cast members use or drive the squad vehicles. So the production company got around it by making their own that was owned by the production company/studio. They had to incorporate a real ff/engineer to drive the truck and run the pumps. The FD would not allow cast members to drive the firetrucks as it was a liability for both the fire department and the cast members driving the trucks. For those who might question this, I'm sure that in all the scenes that there were other trucks brought in and being used in a scene that the ff/engineer (driver/operator) were in fact real fire fighters. Either that or it was scenes where the truck was already in place and actors would just make it look like they were making adjustments. If you do a bit of research the ff/engineer is not just responsible for driving the truck and running the pumps but is also responsible for maintainence of the pumping equipment.The other amazing thing about the show which maybe there may still be a few that don't know that Randolph Mantooth and Kevin Tighe actually took the training for paramedic including the physical rescue and medical training. The only thing that wasn't done was that they decided not to take the exam. They were happy they had the jobs they did as actors. And according to what was said I think by Randolf was that they were the ones who actually did all the climbing and the physical rescues. These scenes were NOT stunt people. I have to correct one comment. The truck used for the squad was made by a group associated with the studios but it was not because the cast couldn't drive it but because they could not get another squad made in time by the company that did make them at that time.
@@84953 that's why Mike Stoker drove the pumper truck, expensive it was they didn't want actors driving the pumper truck as Mike was a real firefighter but I don't remember where I saw or read this. Yes your so right.

BTW, I'm NOT arguing with you. that this is why Mike Stoker was hired by the studio because he was an engineer/firemen for LA county. the reason why you see him driving it and working the pumps I can see why the powers that be didn't want the actors to drive the truck. Imagine getting someone who has driven no more than a pickup and let them behind the wheel of that fire truck. Big difference. Not only the size of the truck but the weight plus the water that is in the tank. Not only that but if the tank weren't completely filled to the brim I would imagine that the shifting of the water in the tank would create a challenge. Anyway you have reminded me that yes part of it was because the engines were so expensive but also the County didn't want the liability of "civilians" driving the trucks and I would imagine that it would include all of their equipment. Remember that the squad was not the county's but belonged to the studio. I tell you what though, one of the things that surprised me was seeing cast member jumping on the back of the truck and riding down the street. Although I guess they didn't go very far as they probably only went far enought to get out of frame on the camera and then they jumped off. Another gaff I noticed today for the first time was in the "snake bit" episode where Jon Gage gets bit by a tattler and they are dealing with the kids in a car going off the road and supposedly a fire had started and a nearby helicopter did a water drop on the car. The whole area where the car was was completely dry. LOL

While filming Emergency! no sirens were used, they were added in later. The stock footage of the Dodge with the vents is a cameraman in a real LACoFD squad filming while driving through traffic with the siren and lights on. That's why we see them move to the left when there is traffic and they drive through red lights. During filming on location at station 127 in Carson the streets were closed off. That's why the squad and engine were able to bolt out of the station with no sirens and only lights.

They took the Paramedic Training course, but did not sit the exam at the end. Essentially they were uncertified paramedics.
When production ended, someone associated with the LA County Fire Department asked Randolph Mantooth if he wanted to become an actual fire fighter and offered to help set him up to retake the class & exam. He actually considered the offer, but ultimately decided to remain an actor.
With regards to the rear view mirror. Trucks like this wouldn't come with a mirror because of the utility box on the back. That's also why it has the HIGHWAY MIRRORS to see past the box..
I actually was thinking the very same thing as I watched this! By the way, I own a work truck because I own a chimney company. My work truck only has the rearview mirror because the base model came with it. I added the utility box to the back aftermarket so I could accommodate my tools etc. Since the box is back there I never use the rearview. It is pretty much useless!!
What would be the need of rear view mirror if the back is blocking the view anyway. They have the side mirrors to see with when they are backing in the station. I often wondered why they did that till , I thought they have to head out when they get a call, makes sense. 😉😁. If you noticed the rear view mirror is turned around in the other direction. Other shifts have to use it if they need to. 😉

Little info. First the squad seen at 4:26 is the truck with the hood louvers. That's a blooper as that isn't squad 51. That is the late 60s Dodge truck that served as I believe squad 8 in the pilot episode. It's an entirely different design of truck than the brand new for 1972 D300 that was always squad 51. Also it was common practice to remove the inside rearview mirror on trucks whose rear body blocked most or all of the rear window as the mirror was useless.

Actually, it seems to be about half and half. If the squad gets entirely in front of the engine, they are going right. Otherwise, it’s a left turn. A lot of times when it is a left turn, they put the left blinker on, but never the right.

Had to get used to him in a medical type show, but I've been enjoying it. Currently taking online dental assistant course so it helps me with comprehending anatomy, etc.
The station wagon in the shots for the first 3 or 4 seasons actually belonged to Jim Page.
The hood in the driving shot is from an early to mid 60s Dodge truck, which you actually showed in one of the stills. My dad was a firefighter when I was a young boy, and we loved Emergency. We watched every episode. As a kid I built models of Firetrucks, Ambulances, Police cars, etc. As an adult, I own all the seasons on dvd, and watch the show regularly on HULU. I'm a car guy too, and since 2000 I built and own a Squad 51 replica that I take to car shows, charity events, etc, or just drive it for fun!

I have all of them too, in the oversized keepcase release that was released this year (I'm sure, on the other hand, that you have it in all the individual seasonal releases; may be incorrect).
The true story about the show is amazing which is basically told in the pilot episode and the influence this show made to have cities and towns have their own paramedic units in real life.

You are somewhat inco=text about the hood vents. In the early shows there were two completely different squad trucks. The one that we all know as squad 51 was a brand new Dodge for. The pilot. The one with the hood vents was an earlier dodge body style. It can be seen in some , on road, action shots in the pilot as well some others in season 1. That is the truck with louvers on the hood it also has the rear view mirror. Appearently they originally planned to use the older truck. I am guessing that Dodge wanted their latest truck front and center and supplied the show with a nice new Dodge. But early road shots were already filmed. So they used that footage for a while.
The shots are literally from the same episode and the same truck. No vents, then yes vents. A definite error.
At the time of filming I believe all LA county squads were of the older type. Even when I did my paramedic internship
( Squad 47 Temple City!) in 1974 the majority were still that type
In a number of season episodes the older truck appears. As does the staring squad. I haven't watched my DVDs lately but I clearly remember seeing both old style and new in the same episodes. . I have my DVDs at our lake house. I will get them back home next week. I will study them.
The Squad with the vents was an actual LA Co. FD unit. A camera was mounted in it for “stock” shots of the squad responding to calls. When the show was being filmed, there were NO OTHER Squads that matched 51, so they used what they had to get the shots. Squad 51 was built by Universal and never belonged to the studio, until after the show ceased production and it was given to them.

Emergency! is one of the few shows from my childhood that is still entertaining today. Many shows from that era are so cheesy they are almost impossible to watch now like CHiPs or the A-Team. This show, broadcast nationwide, helped to popularize the real-life roles Paramedics and EMTs play today.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department was one of the pioneers in bringing the treatment to the patient as opposed to the patient being brought to the treatment. Before that, an ambulance was little more than a taxi with enough space for a gurney. Paramedics in the field gave people who may have expired otherwise a chance to make it to the hospital. Stabilizing a patient before transport has saved millions of lives since this show aired.
Today, in most of the US, the fire department and Medic are dispatched at the same time. You would be hard-pressed to find a fire crew that does not have a paramedic or EMT on board. Often, the fire truck is the first on scene and their EMTs begin the primary medical assessment/treatment.

It wasn't from my childhood (I was born in 1981, and just this year started enjoying it on DVD), but even so, it is one of a handful of select shows on DVD that had everything for me and are well-worth the money on DVD (a couple from my childhood, but the balance of them before).
The reason you see the vents on the hood is because in those shots, it is probably stock footage from the 1st episode, where you can see the Rescue truck that Johnny is/was assigned to before becoming a Paramedic, that is the truck with the hood vents, a 1971 Dodge, it also had a rearview mirror in it, as you see it in the shots looking out the windshield with the vents in the background. The 1972 Dodge is the one you see Johnny in after he has become a Paramedic as it was a truck Universal built specifically for the show to the same specs as the LaCoFd units of the time, because the builder making the LaCoFd units could not make one for the show in time. That unit, the one Universal built, was so well built that it was bought and used for a time by LaCoFd as a actual unit after the show concluded. The 1972 trucks don't have hood vents or a interior rearview mirror as they are not needed due to better cooling technology, and lack of need for a rearview mirror because it was blocked by the utility box.
Rick, Captain Stanley's Office was in the front part of the Station and that door you were talking about is where they kept their turnout gear!
I've been to the real fire station in the show many times, as a volunteer communications officer for L.A. County.
I know the man who purchased the large firetruck and have touched it myself, after buying it he drove it cross country from LA. back to Maryland.
I watched "Emergency" all the time as a kid in the 70's and I absolutely loved it when our local fire department in upstate NY actually got a rescue squad that looked a lot like the one in emergency, only it was a beefier four wheel drive vehicle and it was a bright green color, I don't think it was used as a paramedic vehicle. But it was lots of fun when the firemen would let me check it out, which I did as often as I could.
I still enjoy every once in a while watching Emergency to this day being able to watch it on a channel called "Cozy TV".
The one thing about the show that would bug me a little bit as a kid was when they would drive the squad out of the station with them going down the road to a rescue of some sort and then the next thing you know they are driving a squad with a totally different looking front end usually being older than the one they would normally use, that happened a lot on that show, I'm guessing that the regular squad would break down at times or something and probably also from using stock footage this would become very noticeable at least to me as a kid that was mostly watching the show to see this totally cool firetruck.

The reason for the hood vents vs. the non vented hood is because early in the series they used an earlier Dodge squad. The flat non vented hood you see most of the time is a '72. You will see this interchangeably within an episode occasionally.

Fun fact- the old ones are actual LACo.FD trucks. The '72 and newer were built by the studio to LACo.FD blueprints for the squads.

It was a different year vehicle. LA actually used these in the late 60s and early 70s. They used stock footage sometimes. The vents on the hood and a more truck-like look are a dead giveaway.

One more thing about the EMT truck - on top of the light bar is a white dome-shaped light, in the center. This was on the LAFD plans for the truck to differentiate between the paramedic truck and the rescue truck - the paramedic trucks would have the white dome light. So the prop makers dutifully followed the plans, and the light is clearly visible. *BUT*, LAFD never put the lights on the real trucks, deeming it an unnecessary cost. So the real thing never matched the plans, while the fake one did.
I was actually at the station they filmed originally not the “main” active station that was where they wanted to film the whole series but couldn’t due to the number of calls. The map is I believe still there, however where the radio is isn’t where it is in the show and apparently never was even though where they actually have it at station 127 isn’t an ideal place to have it.
The mirror blooper is a half blooper. Let me explain. The Dodge most commonly seen is a 72/73 D300 cab and chassis. Most cab and chassis trucks were assembled without an inside review mirror for the simple fact that normally a back section wod be put on that would block the view out the rear window. The shots from the inside are from the original pilot movie which used a 68/69 Dodge D300 which (for whatever reason) had a mirror. The vent issue is the same scenario. The older Dodge had them, but not the newer Dodge. Had nothing to do with static scene or on the road scene. Thanks for doing these videos.
These kinds of mistakes were common back then in all TV. Though the rear-view mirror... that wasn't there due to video...the back window is blocked. Any truck with that kind of bed would not have had a RV mirror. That means that the first-person driving scenes was probably just a regular vehicle.. might not have even been a truck with those vents you point out.
we loved this show when we were kids. when I catch it these days I realize how terrible the acting was, not by the regulars but all the different people who cycled through the show as accident victims or worried family members of victims
In Season 1 the acting was bad by all cast members. But in Season 2 and beyond it’s fun to watch how the stars of the show began to feel more comfortable and perform more natural in their roles.

That is true-- however, the first go (midseason replacement of 1972) was still far more enjoyable to me (I saw it on DVD) than any season of Chicago Fire or FOX's 9-1-1.

Something I noticed, there must be at least 2 squad trucks. One has the letters D O D G E on the hood painted red, another has them chrome.
Loved this show as a kid in the 70’s. Never noticed these inconsistencies. Cool video.
One thing to keep in mind, and this is true of 'Dragnet' and 'Adam-12' as well, Jack Webb intended these shows to be watched by children and thus they were written and shot from the point of view of a child. Children watching these shows aren't going to notice these inconsistencies. I also think that one of the reasons the truck used in the interior shots has no mirror is that it's a different model and if you look you can see that the tool boxes prevent the driver from seeing out of the rear windshield so a rearview mirror would serve no purpose., if you look at the model used for the outdoor shots you can see out of the rearwindshield.

There are many shows, and movies where in-vehicle camera shots looking toward the people in the front seat dont show the rear view mirror. I always figured this was so you cant see the camera.
On the gap of the lightbar. What you are actually describing is the utility box /bed of the truck as seen through the front and rear windshields. The reason you sometimes see only red and at other times the sky or background is due to the angle of the camera as they filmed the shot. When you see only red, the camera is at a higher angle, above their line of sight, versus when you see the background scenery, the camera is at their eye level. The top of the bed sits about 4-6 inches below the rear windshield.The shot you pointed out is a night time shot, where it's darl below the lightbar, and there is a higher camera angle.
On the very first show there’s the scene of the squad backing into an empty station. Gage and DeSoto exit the squad and there’s the parked fire truck. There was an episode where Capt. Stanley was doing CPR on someone with a heart rhythm on the scope. Those bloopers are fun to catch.
BIG Blooper in season 3 episode called “Snakebite”, Captain Stanley has the microphone backwards as he is talking into it.
Several episodes: the squad is shown leading the engine one second and then the engine pulls up to the scene first.
There's a clip of the guys in Brackett's office and Johnny takes a thing on the desk and puts it in his pocket as a joke! I'll see if I can find it.

The dodge with the vents is a 1970 power wagon 300 series that is the one with those cooling vents on the hood i have 1971 power wagon close to the seventies version with out those large vents on the 70 model

Being an Emergency! Fan and a Mopar fan..I can tell you the difference in the hoods.The so called stock shots were of a 1969 Ram 1 ton which is considered the first generation Ram truck.The more popular shots of the hood were of the second generation Ram truck which started in 1971.
