Something that I'm not really surprised that people don't know. Liquor in the old west was kind of crappy. And the Cowboys wanted something to drink that could mask the flavor of really bad booze. I'm honestly glad that I sent somebody else knows this.
True. There was some rotgut. Most of those cowboys were just trying to get drunk and have fun. Be like college kids these days shooting Tequila or Everclear. Nobody really loves the taste, but it gets you there!
My favorite drink back before 74 when I quit drinking was a Tom Collins. I read once that during the revolution, barmaids used to stir drinks with a feather that had enough of the feathers removed for them to hold the stem. A Frenchman, who had ordered a drink, in seeing a barmaid doing this said, Ah, Le Cocks Tail, and supposedly, that's where the term came from.
I know fl. Is not the old west but was one of the last frontiers in the east. My dad told me of a drink that his dad said he heard from his grandfather. So five generations back. And my grandfather was born in the 1890,s. But they made a moonshine from suger cain syrup skimming. So kinda like a rum. Anyway Whiskey mixed with cain juice and the juice of one key lime. I have had a version every was the same but the moonshine was corn based instead of cain. It's not bad.
Santee watching a wild west documentary yesterday on youtube called TONY ROBINSONS WILD WEST, they mentioned that back in Tombstone these hard men's favoirite drink was a Gin fizz toddy (Lol), its increadible to think that these hard dudes were drinking cocktails instead of rot-gut whiskey or anything of that kiind (obviously some did indulge in this beverage, but their fasvourite was...)
Hello cowboy, I'm watching wanting a glass of wine. Keep the whisky. Funny about the punch . Found this very interesting friend. Nice to see ya. See ya in down the trail friend. 🌵
Excellent video, Santee! During the hearing following the Gunfight Near the OK Corral, Wyatt Earp described how he'd tried to get Ike Clanton to sell out some of his cohorts. Wyatt said that he and Ike went out back while the bartender mixed their drinks. So much easier in a movie to show everybody downing straight whisky, but mixed drinks were very popular in the Old West.

Since I just made a beef bone stock last night and it was in the fridge, seemed like a great time to try a _beef tea._ Couldn't readily find any info online telling how to make it, so just put a shot of brandy in about 3 oz of cold beef stock & stirred it with a celery stalk. Verdict: *I like it* Certainly "invigorating" and savory.

You and me both! Seriously, a friend told me that he used to work at an exclusive club for wealthy ranchers out here and they drank the stuff. Bourbon and Bullion.
Buffalo Bill favored a mixed drink called a stone fence, it was mixed with 2/3 gin and 1/3 squeezed lemon. My favorite is a bourbon mixed old fashion, this drink was created in the 1920's. Don't have it often, last one was in February 2020. After this lock down is over I'll have another.
