Too much of proper and accurate information in a single video.. I need to watch it atleast 10 times to to grasp the entire scenario.. Hail to Amit Sengupta ❤

India has encountered significant obstacles in developing thorium reactors. Its three-stage nuclear power program’s final phase concentrates on exploiting its abundant thorium reserves through thorium-based reactors. Yet, these reactors’ development poses technological hurdles, especially in managing highly radioactive fresh fuel and necessitating remote fuel fabrication. Conversely, China’s TMSR-LF1, an experimental molten salt thorium reactor, was completed ahead of schedule in 2021, marking significant progress. This reactor employs a mix of thorium and uranium-235 to explore the thorium-uranium fuel cycle’s various aspects. Protactinium-233 (Pa233) presents a substantial challenge in the thorium fuel cycle. With a half-life of about 27 days, Pa233’s decay prolongs the breeding of Uranium-233 (U233) from Thorium-232 (Th232). This delay is a fundamental radiochemical issue that affects thorium reactors’ efficiency, as it takes considerably longer to produce U233 compared to Plutonium-239 (Pu239) from Uranium-238 (U238). Addressing this issue is crucial for the successful implementation of thorium reactors, integral to India’s long-term energy strategy.
Thank you Amit, congratulations india. I always find it interesting how india managed to navigate the super powers with whats going on. At one point I thought Brics was going to completely go against the west. But india is not and I hope that india is in the room to negotiate a more peaceful resolution
A small correction at 06:30, in the core, there are no slow neutrons , fission is achieved by fast neutrons only, in fast breeder reactors , there are no slow neutrons.
Communal violence bill 2011, was about to be passed in UPA. It would have made Hindu side 'defacto Culprit' during any Riots. BJP opposed it tooth and nail
i watched this video twice and now I can teach my fellow siblings about the working of nuclear reactor. You're the reason why I started understanding things in more placid manner rather than ill-informed way I used to be Aapko koti koti pranam Gurudev 🙏
This is why BARC is researching AHWR the work is in progress alot of technical advances have been made by BARC when it comes to the design of AHWR but still critical technical problems exist and prototype will take time.
Question should be on timelines....how fast can NPCIL build those PFBR ? It should be on fleet mode like First stage PHWR. First stage capacity is only 10GW by limiting factor of Uranium present in India, but Second stage PFBR capacity is 500 GW. So, it should be the primary focus. Hence India need such 100 reactors of 500MW to fully utilize the capacity.
Great explanation of a solid-fueled breeder but the real advancement will be the liquid-fueled breeder. TerraPower and Exodys Energy are both developing a molten Chloride fast breeder.
In this video, he says we don't have a thorium reactor. In another video, he said we are now in 2nd phase of nuclear journey with thorium usage. May be both are not contradictory. But we certainly need a nuclear power 101 sessions, similar to the way he did the amazing geography video. Please do explain each reactor type in your style. What we developed, what is in progress, what is the future.?... Not many can do it as simple as clearly as you.
In Third Stage we will use Thorium as fuel which will be converted to uranium with help of plutonium we will receive from stage 2 step. The reactor more likely will be same of stage 2
And abundantly available in India - so no dependence on any other country for nuclear fuel. And no geopolitical pressures or compromises. Fully atmanirbhar bharat.
Excellent overview of the subject, thank you. The long-term planning and strategic investments by India are very wise. In the West our governments are like stupid, spoiled children with attention deficit disorder (and worse).
Same in India bruh. But current central govt. Is nationalistic and right wing so good stuffs are happening otherwise we also have the same Leftist idiots.
It's the same here. Only that you guys are facing the crisis recently but had much better leaders in the past, but for a relatively young country, we're facing this way too soon.
(Pu-239)Plutonium is to be used initially as the central part of the core, which is generated in the first stage of the nuclear reactor programme. You may correct it.
Thank you for the video. FYI, the coolant (liquid metal - sodium) makes it very very challenging while decommissioning these type of reactors. The entire reactor, primary and secondary circuit pipe works, heat exchanger etc gets heavily contaminated by activated sodium which highly explosive when in contact with moisture and water. So decommissioning costs easily outweighs the benefits of power generation but conversion to fissile material is interesting. 🙏🏼🇮🇳
Till now this one was best explanation on this topic. ❤ Thanks a lot for this but i have a little doubt So in this after this fast breaded reactor i.e 2nd stage, we will not be having 3rd stage? that is to use thorium as fuel and complete the cycle. I am little bit confused here i mean it is theoretically possible but you said practically we don't have proper plans to use thorium as core in the 3rd stage am I right?
Sir one thing I want to suggest you that please upload videos as early as you can because it has been more or less 1 month of the news so please 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
