    Thank you Jay. Thank you for not being pretentious about money. You made it, you have it, now you do stuff! Everyone in America should look up to you. And everyone should say "Hey, this is his thing, I like his thing." Long Live Jay Leno.

    Hello everyone - Since I am the one who put the turntable there, I am glad that most of the commentary here is positive.
    To answer some of the questions - yes, we make outdoor units, but they are designed to be in a pit (flush surface) and there was not sufficient time to get the permits required and excavate.
    Since the garage does have a lower level, a pit was not possible inside, thus the surface mount. This one was built to handle his longest car, the Duesenberg (152" wheelbase), so it will handily accommodate any of his others.
    Keep watching Jay's garage - he is the best thing to happen to "car people" since, well, cars!!!!

      William Osborne
      Hello Bill..I live in Australia and there is an increasing problem of little kids being run over by SUVs in home driveways and turntables would largely eliminate the danger to them..they are also excellent if you are living on a busy road where it's very dangerous to reverse out into traffic..keep up the good work..you are probably saving lives and you may not even realize it.
      And you are right about Jay..he gives a lot of time and effort to share his collection..from watching him I have learned more about steam cars in one hour than months of reading.

      Well when you have a 100+ car garage I doubt you care. You can only drive one home after all.

    • @Jogwheel
      @Jogwheel 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If they were sunk-into the floor as Jay suggested, and positioned right... you could still fit another car or two in there, I'd imagine. Depends on your space, obviously - but I doubt many normal folks even have a 3+ car garage, or the money to buy a giant turntable, haha.

      My guess is that's probably not his real turn-table but instead that's a display unit that was installed just for this show. Notice that he was talking about guys having to turn hard on gravel ... he's probably got a different unit installed on his property that is out of date so they're showing this one instead.

    • @somerandomdudepa
      @somerandomdudepa 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      gmtruckclub I really don't think he cares if he can only fit one car in it.. and rent the other space out? Why? So some random person has access to his garage ..and you think he needs the extra money? lmao

  • @RamblinAround
    @RamblinAround 10 ปีที่แล้ว +36

    If the turntable was outside, you probably could still use all your garage bays.

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed. I've seen various other homes utilize outdoor turntables with huge success. A turntable outdoors not only allows for full garage use, but makes any situation easier than something indoors could do. However all the ones i've seen outdoors were permanently mounted within the driveway and would likely not be as easily serviced/repaired.

    I would put that turn table just in front of the garage. Jay I saw your last show last night and I thought I should let you know, no matter what you are thinking it's not over. Not over by a long shot. I scaled everything down and retired. That lasted about a year before I realized, I have to be a productive. I just can't sit around and I don't think you will be able to either. Don't make the mistakes I made by selling stuff. Keep everything, and go right on living like you have another hundred years. I started a small business that doesn't make crap, but it makes me happy and if it ever makes any money I'm going to scale up and go right on with my life, You should do the same.

    My late stepfather had an old barn in RI with an old turntable on the second floor. There is a dirt ramp leading up to a large door that we used to drive our old 55 Nash station wagon in. We could turn the car around and push it out the door to jump start it on the ramp, as the battery was almost always weak in the morning.

    The Eagle's Nest on Long Island which is also the Vanderbilt Museum has a turnstile like that for I believe Mr. Vanderbilt's 1930s something Lincoln. Me and my brother got the opportunity to see it before it was shown to the public about 10 years ago because we were the only ones there on the tour of the mansion. That was great. Good luck Jay!

    For all the naysayers and those who are jealous of Jay and his money, the turntable may not be for everyone. I cannot afford one and do not want to give up the space in my shop. Ideas like this can be a jumping off point for someone with a functioning brain. I need to be able to turn my motorcycle around in my shop. It weighs 1100 pounds, has no reverse and I'm well past 60. After seeing this, I realize that I can make up a channel that I can ride onto that rolls on casters. Weld on an outrigger for the kickstand with another caster and, voila, a portable turntable.
    Nice product, Mr. Osborn

    I saw a similar contraption years ago but it had no electric motors at all. The turntable used the weight of the car and a slight inbalance to cause the turntable to rotate 180 degrees. So by just shifting the car back or forwards on the turntable you could make it turn one way or the other. It would always turn 180 degrees then stop until the car was moved again.

    There's one of these but from the 50s sitting in an old building here where I live. The building was a car dealership in the 50s and upstairs was too small to turn the cars around so on the drive up as soon as you hit flat ground there's a turntable, it's manual though you have to push your cargo turn around. There was one on the 1st floor but the demoed it because they couldn't stop it from turning and it's now an office. I would have left it and had tuning offices lol

    There was a manual version of the turntable at a small town post office (Bradford on Avon Somerset) but postman are too lazy to get out and push. So you went on to the turntable at the right speed and slightly off to one side, then you stamped on the brakes and off you went. The trick was getting the right speed so you stopped in the right direction with no manual adjustment needed...

    Jay, now that you're out of a job. You can devote more time to your love about cars. I hope you enjoy it to its fullest. These videos are not only entertaining. They also bring more people into the fold of car people. Plus, people are being educated while enjoying your videos. I must say I am not big fan of talk shows. The only time I have the TV on this for sports, news or an occasional race. Like the 24 hours of Daytona. I have become a fan of endurance racing. Thanks for bringing all these incredible cars to us.

    A little extravagant? It's okay! You're Jay Leno for crying out loud! :) you're a car Guy like me! The classics and muscle cars are my thing & I love that you have awesome cars! I aspire to have things like this one day.

    Would have been more intelligent to have placed the turntable outside in front of the garage doors. Doing that would have allowed the other car bays to have remained useful.

      True but when you have a warehouse/museum on the other side of town you can
      afford to loose a couple of bays.

    If I remember correctly, the Miata was also designed to be a "poor man's sports car." But the car was so good, the market price was a lot higher than their original price point, and Mazda made a ton of money. I think that was the case with the original Dodge Viper, also- was supposed to be a Corvette Killer- faster and cheaper than a 'vette, but again the car was so awesome it was instantly worth more.

    I was in an fancy old home in Buffalo NY that had an original turntable built flush into the garage floor, not much new under the sun!

    My uncle built a turn table for his motorcycle 40 years ago using a wooden cable spool. It was installed in his shed so he could spin his Gold Wing.

    I get it that he put it in cause he can obviously but I like backing a car into a garage. Especially if you have some of the muscle cars Leno has, the sound of the exhaust from one it goes from outside to being backed in sounds great to me.

    So you did all that for one car to fit in your garage well done

    My only thought is that this turns a 3 spot garage into a 1 spot garage.

    "This driveway is not particularly big"... What!? Our driveway is only a third of that, as is our garage, and it can still fit the same amount of cars. I know it's a problem to turn a Duesenberg around but that is not what I would call a common problem for most of us XD
