中国种树大工程 -- China's gigantic reforestation effort

I was invited to Inner Mongolia by Alipay Ant Forest at the end of April. This is a non-profit organization within the Alipay and the Alibaba Group that has designed a very innovative way of transforming the physical activities of its users into credit that can be used to protect the environment. The area we went to, as well as other regions in northern China and beyond the border in Mongolia, have been the sources of many sandstorms in recent years. China is engaged in a huge process of afforestation and desertification prevention. Ant Forest is just a small part of it, but a very interesting part. I stayed only two days there, but it was eye-opening.
By the way, I think I didn’t explain yet what ‘Lao Lu’ means. Lu, or ‘road’, is my Chinese family name, which is fitting considering my original French name is Ruelle, or ‘small road’. Lao literally means ‘old’ and it is often used to address friends who are older than oneself. Everybody calls me Lao Lu in China, or ‘old street’ :)
四月底，我被支付宝蚂蚁森林邀请到内蒙古。这是支付宝和阿里巴巴集团内部的一个非营利组织，它设计了一种非常创新的方法，将用户的体育活动转化为可用于保护环境的信用。我们去过的地区，以及中国北方和内蒙边境外的其他地区，近年来一直是许多沙尘暴的源头。中国正在进行一场巨大的植树造林和荒漠化防治进程，蚂蚁森林只是其中的一小部分，但却是非常有趣的部分。我只在那里呆了两天，令人大开眼界的两天。

中国人在这方面是真的在做实事，十多年前我去甘肃旅行一片片的黄土，现在再去真是满山的绿色。

无知，当你不去治理，沙漠边界将会扩大，居住的人群不得不迁徙到你所在的城市，哪怕你居住在沿海，人口密度也将越来越大，与你形成生存竞争，这就是和你息息相关的情况。再一个，看看北京几十年前的天气和现在的对比。即使生态治理是超过百年的，那么不考虑你自己，也给自己的后代考虑一个未来吧。
