There was another Essendon player as well but I said "wow, AFL superstars" and he looked a bit embarrassed. They had come from a trial match against Power.
@Princess Daisy That wasn't Geelong's philosophy at that time. I can remember them having at least half of their regular best 22 playing in that match. They had about 7 players representing Victoria, and at least another 5 players representing the All Stars. Even their coach Mark Thompson was coaching the Big V on that night.
Kane Cornes was a very good footballer. Don't know how people forget this. 4 Best n Fairests, 2 All Australians, 300 games. Probably the best ball-winning tagger the game has seen. 6 times averaged over 27 touches in a season, whilst keeping his opponent honest.
Leading into that Brownlow count I was surprised that Cooney had made All Australian. His first half of the season he was on a blinder, but then faded pretty hard.
@@Samfoote If Geelong didn't have 15 players stealing votes from each other Cooney wouldn't have ever gotten close. Brownlows should go to the best player of the year, not the best player on an average team.

Some trivia… GAJ averaged more disposals, kicks, handballs, marks, tackles, goals and behinds than Cooney in 2008. Cooney played 4 more games though.
