Back in the 70's I was backpacking the AT with my father, his biggest advice to me was "slow down and look around, enjoy and embrace what you are doing".
The way Sarah is doing this hike sounds pretty ideal to me. Some nights in the tent, others in the van. I’m may give it a try, some day soon....... M pretty sure that poor tiny moth isn’t going to hurt you.......

My dog, George, never responds to dog barks when I’m watching tv. Today, on Ollie’s second bark, as you were heading off away from him, George started barking. I was so startled. It took awhile for me to settle him down. It must have been the plaintive cry in Ollie’s bark that got to him. 🤓
Thanks for your videos! You 3 are a pleasure to "know"!! In 2002 (when we still lived in Nassau Cty. NY) I went on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. That was 750 km or so in 5 weeks. That was in part a consequence of 9/11. Now we are back in Switzerland enjoying retired life at 'home' (my wife is Dutch but by now she prefers CH to NL). I'm now 78 and Désirée is 75. We enjoy (short!) hikes, E-Bike rides (ideal for Emmental which is either up or down!), and regular swims now that COVID allows me to dip in the community covered pool. Good luck and remain healthy! Supported hikes are actually harder because of the logistics and constant switching from hike/camp to RV/Hotel. Once you make that decision to hit the trail it's easier because you have everything you need on your back. You only need to rely on towns for food, laundry, and lodging. The mental game is the hardest part.
I love watching your videos and I am enjoying this journey! I love the juxtaposition of your individual videos. As a mother I feel the odd need to warn you/ prepare you for the inevitably that you are (and need to be) coming to a crossroads where you are each going to be in very different head spaces. What a gift that each of you have hiked the PCT together and understand what it means mentally! At some point you are going to have to have a split…Are each of you ready for the separate journeys this trek represents?
I should add that my husband and I have an RV and have discussed the idea of me hiking the PCT and him (and our kids) supporting me along the journey. In considering it in more detail I came to the conclusion that I could do it for a bit but at some point, having my family along on the outskirts, took away from the necessity for my finding a “tramily” and a deeper connection to the trail. Ultimately I decided that there were places along the PCT where I wanted them to join me for a night or two but I couldn’t be in a mind frame where I came to depend on them every night or every few nights. I wasn’t going to connect with the experience in the way I needed to. Part of the joy and experience of the PCT is in finding the comradery of other hikers living thru the daily struggles that I too was experiencing. I can’t speak to your journey but can only offer that it was difficult decision for us to reach as a couple. Ultimately I had to figure out what it was that I wanted on the adventure and why I was seeking it. In the end I came to the difficult conclusion that it was a “solo” journey. It’s a tough conversation and I know you two will make the best choice! I look forward to seeing how the two of you figure out what your path is!

Ultimately I decided that there were places along the PCT where I wanted them to join me for a night or two but I couldn’t be in a mind frame where I came to depend on them every night or every few nights. I wasn’t going to connect with the experience in the way I needed to. Part of the joy and experience of the PCT is in finding the comradery of other hikers living thru the daily struggles that I too was experiencing.
I can’t speak to your journey but can only offer that it was difficult decision for us to reach as a couple. Ultimately I had to figure out what it was that I wanted on the adventure and why I was seeking it. In the end I came to the difficult conclusion that it was a “solo” journey. It’s a tough conversation and I know you two will make the best choice! I look forward to seeing how the two of you figure out what your path is!
