This symphony is one of my favorites with a very jolly and exciting feeling to it that is very different from the Beethoven like symphonies which most symphonies try to mimic at this point. This is truly Unique (Except for Bizet which was after)
A lovely symphony, and you can indeed hear the origins of the Bizet symphony in C in it. I have always wished that Gounod had used the trumpets more in the finale.
OIne of the earlier French symphonies before the rebirth of the instrumental music in 1870 under the auspices of the Société Nationale de Musique. Bizet used it to conceive his symphony, written at the age of 17.
Saludos.
The third movement is in fact an old-fashioned Minuet and Trio, the form abandoned by Beethoven in his first symphony. (though both are labelled Scherzo). I love the outer movements.
Uplifting, playful, tuneful, colorful: Gounod's first shows echoes from Schubert, among others. Gounod's style, in turn, would influence Bizet and Tchaikovsky (among others).
Comunque ben orchestrato e piacevole. Ottima l'esecuzione e la direzione. Complimenti per il post
+srothbardt Acctually, the Bizet Sym. in C is patterned after the Gounod Sym in D. Bizet took many themes from the Gounod work. Gounod was the mentor of Bizet at the Conservatoire de Paris. To Bizet, this was a student composition. He composed it in 1855, it was found in 1933, then performed in concert in 1935. Using themes from other composers was once considered showing respect.
srothbardt curiously, the slow movement of this symphony contains a theme (beginning at about 8:15) which Bizet incorporated into the slow movement of his other Symphony in C Major, known as "Roma".
Wayne Warmack yea, this sounds a lot like the Bizet Symphony in C. Both are wonderful works in the Classical style. If I have a preference between the two, it's the Bizet, on account of its gorgeous slow movement.

This symphony is sort of like the coffee you take in the morning to prep for all of the other music you are going to listen to.

can't believe i haven't heard Gounod before- thank you for featuring this artist
This is a magnificent post, along with Symphony #2. Thank you so very much. Such lovely music.
Thanks for sharing with us.

Gounod is the big french talent of the 19th century. Nobody has a sense of proportion like his.

I had the same thought about Bizet.
This really is a great symphony to play and it's so catchy too.
: Nice music to listen, but also as background by work, sprinkling and not aggressive, marvelous.
You are right, the style is delicate, like lace.
A lot more to Gounod than just operas, great as the best of those are.

I cant believe that this is a picture of the Champs-Elysées...
Inspired Bizet's Symphony in C. Sounds very similar.
