My beloved grandmother had a cockatiel that rode on her shoulder everywhere, nibbled her cheek, said "wanna kiss" and talked a blue streak. She bathed him in her cupped hands under running water. She didn't clip his wings, so he flew free in her apartment. Such wonderful memories.
I had a budgie who talked incessantly, including “Beam me up Scotty” and “I’m a bad ass budgie”. If my partner entered the room he’d say, “Hello Nigel”; if it was me, he’d say, “Hello Dee”. He’d also bathe under a running tap in my cupped hands, even lifting his wings to access his armpits! He’d kiss us so many times, at a staccato beat, each time making a kissing sound. Sometimes the kisses were long, with matching sound, followed by “Mwah”. He was a permanent attachment on my shoulder, whatever I was doing. He only returned to his cage after he said, “Poop”, which is self explanatory. Or after we said, “Time for bed Humphrey”, he said, “Uh oh, bedtime” and then return to his cage. Once the cage was covered, he’d say, “Night night Dee, sweet dreams, I love you.” He was such a special little man that after he passed, we didn’t have the heart to replace him, for fear of not getting another budgie so amazingly talented. Still missed, 25 years later. RIP Humphrey.

The bond between the this sweet woman and her bird is just incredible.... you can tell that she is the of person who should be a pet owner, loving, responsible, and willing to let a pet develop their7 own personality rather than putting expectations on them..... I'm sure her dog had an equally wonderful home.

Very sweet birb with a solid caring mom. A serious note however for people who want to run out a get a pet parrot; this is a particularly affectionate bird as are many popular youtube birds. The personality of your bird is unpredictable and you have to accept that when deciding to parent them. Even with the most most loving, intelligent, experienced, attentive care, some birds will be far more bitey and aggressive especially during hormonal times. They are generally long lived 15-80 years for larger parrots. A serious commitment because re-homing them can be devastatingly traumatic for the birds because they pair bond for life and sort of pair bond with care-takers.

Love Ringnecks and Mustache Parakeets, their high pitched voices are so sweet, it's almost like they took a few hits of helium,lol. So glad you two found each other at the right time, but sorry you lost your sweet doggie, he will be waiting for you at Rainbow Bridge.

That woman has a wonderful personality, the bird is lucky to have her and vice versa. I love that she protects him from harm by not allowing him in the kitchen. I did the same with my kids when they were toddlers, most of the time we had a door we bought at a Home Depot horizontally latched to the walls outside the kitchen. My toddlers could see in but not get underfoot during the use of the stove or oven.

Darling bird! A few words of positivity: Please do not ever despair. As difficult as coping with the din of yhe absence of a beloved pet and best friend is, the memories of them fills you and replaces the chunks of your heart they took with them. I miss my sweet pups every single day. They lived long lives (of course, not long enough) and they still mean the world to me. It is also a good idea to add a beloved friend for company and to immediately maintain your focus on how important you are, as well as your pet pal. You are a kind and loving person. Be there because you need you, and they need you, too. Hugs.
Animals offer such unconditional love. They just want us and they prove all the time it’s not just for food. It amazes me with dogs and horses who have been so abused but yet they still have love for the race that hurt them. They seem to know when people love them and want to care for them. It’s so sad that poor birds develop plucking in response to abuse. Cats I have seen almost immediately warm up and others that take years to warm up and get over it. But so many other animals learn to trust us even though they know humans have hurt them so bad.
That's such a sweet story. I hope you do as well as can be expected losing your 😇 dog, I am deeply sorry for that. Parrots are a lot like people. I am happy you have Darwin now. He is a real find. You got a good one.
Here in Germany we have a lot of rose-ringed parakeets living wildly in the big cities. Allegedly they were imported during the 1960's as pet animals but some were released by their owners because they apparently had a too difficult character to keep them as pets. But despite them being tropical birds they survived the German winters and steadily grew in their populations so we now have literally thousands of birds here. I see them every day but wouldn't even think of the idea to catch one and try to domesticate it. Nice that your parakeet is so different and has such a sweet personality.
Not surprising. COVID lockdown began when my older cat (since passed) was 16. Our office communicated via video for over a year (and we still use video). That cat loved to watch court hearings, attend video mediations, and chirp and trill to other cats, dogs, bird, reptiles, etc. He often got responses. This is _great_ enrichment for our pets! Good for you!
Your story brought me to tears. I know how devastating it must have been to lose your dog. I have such a special bond with my bird - she is a Senegal whom I adopted 15 years ago. I had a cockatiel before her for 10 years, but I was traveling a lot for work and it cud be that I wasn’t home as much. Nevertheless your bond is very special. God bless you all!❤
