The larghetto alone is so sublime and gorgeously orchestrated. I'm blown away having never heard this piece. My appreciation for underrated Hummel has skyrocketed.
Richard Allen the slow movement opens in the most Romantic way possible, with the extended hornmusic. Not unlike Weber's Freischutz and Brahms' superb 2nd piano concerto. Hummel...is a fantastic composer, even if he felt intimidated by the omnipresent spectre of Beethoven.
One of the most underrated piano concertos. Great work, great interpretation...
SenfonikAnkara yea this concerto op. 89 is even more underrated than the excellent a-minor opus 85. Both abound with flowing lyrical melodies, and this one in b-minor is at times operatic, and always dramatic.
It's high time Hummel is acknowledged as one of the finest composers in the early Romantic era.
The introduction, alone, to this piece, is really quite outstanding. Hard not to see that Hummel put a lot of effort into this - NOT going ahead when The Muse was failing him, and waiting until it came back. Patience with the process is a lot of what this kind of art takes, not just craftmanship and technical know-how.
Bee Sheerhan that third movement, especially, could fit admirably into a Chopin concerto!
Definitely not Howard Shelley but Chandos best selling disk of Hough and the. ECO which won a Grammy award in 1988. For some reason Hough didn't record any more Hummel for many years and Howard Shelley recorded the remainder of the piano concertos. But this is a supercharged performance
The amazing music is so artfully accompanied by these precious paintings -- lovely...
What a fabulous pianist and superb composition.
A big thank you to Hummel and Hough over twenty years ago in H M V I was told THIS Is the one you want they were SO RIGHT
Bravo brilliance music concerto bravo
00:00 I - Allegro moderato
16:54 II - Larghetto
24:48 III - Finale: Vivace
merci pour cette découverte magnifique concerto ....
Felicito al virtuoso pianista .De esta version.De un gran concierto.
Un descubrimiento precioso!
A dramatic first movement followed by a beautifully peaceful and harmonious second and an exciting third.
Graham Palmer vintage Hummel. He was Mozart's pupil but by this time he had developed his own voice. Hummel, like Beethoven, Schubert and Weber formed the "post-Classical" school of composition--not quite full blown Romantic, as they all were heavily indebted in the Classical forms, but they were getting there.
Thanks for uploading this wonderful piece.
great concerto, perhaps his best
This is actually the recording made by Stephen Hough

Thank you for that remark. It's true. Unfortunately, this recording disapired from my youtube domain, and I post my copy.
I don't understand this answer. If it is the recording made by Stephen Hough, why do you ascribe it firstly to Howard Shelley ?
Can somebody please tell me where can I find the score of this concerto? Orchestra and piano parts.
IMLSP library have it
The A minor and B minor are SO FAR SUPERIOR to his dribbly others in the major!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the recording of Op. 89 (along with Op. 85) that everyone knows. But IMHO the perfect interpretation of both can be found in the Protopopescu/Rahbari recording - they really nailed it.
