    Whether you know it as downball, handball or something else, kids have been playing this game all over the country for generations.
    These days, school kids use a high-bounce rubber ball, which is a break from the tatty tennis ball tradition, and they say it adds some much-needed speed to the game.
    That we don’t know where downball came from (or whether it was invented by a kid) makes this sport all the more magical.

    I lived in Australia early 70s in Sydney and we played it in the quad and it was called handball. Always with a tennis ball. The grid seemed to be specifically for that as it didn’t seem to have any other use.

      Our primary school in Brisbane the early 00's had about 20 courts all over the place. No question what they were for. Sometimes there would be 10 or more people in the line for one court.
      Depending on the rules of the kids (mostly the ball owner), either all squares were 'out' (back of the line) or just dunce. we also had AKQ, not KQJ.

    Handtennis was the name in 1970s at primary school, on an asphalted sloping surface in up to 3x3 squares or along a concete driveway in a linear array.. Soft shots for little opponents and low-fast for adept contenders. Spin was rare but tended to win.

    I was known as the queen of handball in my primary school. I freakin loved it and was so good at it I beat all the boys and girls combined. There’s something called a “slug” which is when you hit the handball really fast and very low to the ground that it’s hard for the opponents to stop. I was a real master at this sht. Ahhh brings all the memories

    The nostalgia 😭
    I helped a bunch of people in my school develop ideas for special moves and skills
    My skill was i got reaalllyyy good at hitting it ridiculously low and fast without making it roll. Often people would even lay down along the edge to see if it counted as bouncing or a roll

    • @Jeb.07
      @Jeb.07 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was the second best in my primary school. The best player didn’t have any particularly flashy skills but he had fantastic defence and was PERFECT at hitting it from anywhere on his side to juuuuust into the back corners of your square. He’d win by wearing his opponent out, making them run back and forth between the far back corners, then go for a short hit into the front of your square when you looked tired enough, and you’d either miss it, or overestimate and hit it too far to land in his square.

    • @Jeb.07
      @Jeb.07 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      one skill i came up with the idea for and my friend eventually mastered, putting so much backspin on the handball that it would still have some backspin after the first bounce. If you did this and the opponent didn’t get it quickly enough, the spin after it bounced in their square could still have been enough to bounce it back over your square even though it was still “their ball”, making it impossible for them to hit it without playing a foul.

    In nz in the 80s and 90s in hamilton we called it ''aussies''. Instead of a small ball or tennis ball we used one just bit smaller than a soccer ball. Opened up so much tricks like skims, (which would actually spin backwards as it skimmed from your square to the next.) spinners(left & right) front and back spins if you were really good. Was more tactical, almost trying to trick or outwit the other person. Be awesome to see this style played again

      There's literally a yard full of kids playing and calling it downball in this video. You must feel like you never lose an argument since you refuse to accept reality.
