    I have been studying and playing classical guitar since the early 70s. Never have any of my instructors ever even mentioned the Travis Pattern, nor have I come across a good presentation or method of how to quickly learn it, until now. Greg did a bang-up job on this lesson. By the way can any of us say "Shades of Kansas - Dust In The Wind". 😁
    A little over a year ago I decided to teach myself Jazz and so I treated myself to a Joe Pass Emperor II Pro. I purchased several Jazz instruction books, but became a little frustrated in the techniques presented in the books. I figured it would be very simple to transition from classical to Jazz since I have no trouble reading standard notation.. But came to realize that there really is a bit more to it.. I just might sign up for one of his courses.

    Like the Intro to 'DUST IN THE WIND,' correct? Nice teaching way, a little -at - a -time... Thanks! Do you teach patterns for other chords: G, D, A, F, E?

    • @markfreemantle7608
      @markfreemantle7608 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll venture a reply, even though I have not yet mastered this pattern: the thumb normally starts on the Root note, so an E chord, start on 6th string; G...same; A - 5th. D is odd in that the root is string 4 and the second thumb note is a lower note, A, on 5th string. As to the fingers? I'm planning to start with the exact same pattern and maybe only change the nature of the chord shape. For example: G chord? (left hand) 3 fingered version or 4 finger? A chord? maybe an A9 where needed. etc.

    There are hundreds of videos on TH-cam using the generic label "Travis-Picking" which is a complete joke; Elizabeth Cotten (and a host of other Folk/Blues players) played finger style (inc alt-bass/treble picking) long before Merle Travis. Also Merle Travis only ever used one finger, so it's ludicrous to refer to finger style/fingerpicking as "Travis Picking" - how did the myth ever get started I wonder?

    Sorry, but this isn't Travis Picking! You're demonstrating even-time, finger picking. Travis Picking is a swing-time, syncopated finger-picking.
    See Tommy Emmanuel's version instead. He shows the thumb playing strings 4, 5 and 6 only. He shows how to anchor the little finger and how to use the ring finger as well as the index and middle fingers:

      Are multiple pattern variations while this is applied to modern classic rock and folk songs.
      The country ones are even different than Mr Travis's as he actually only picked with his thumb and index finger..
      In the 60's many variations were furthered from his base with his Thumb and index,reason entire aspect is named after what he started.
      Tommy Emmanuel is a great for the one you refer to..

      kingdom777866 .... I hear you buddy, and you’re right ... there are many patterns and it can be confusing. You just have to select one to learn and do it. After your muscle memory learns one, you can simply move it up or down. Visit my TH-cam channel; I have a couple tutorials on Travis picking that I know will help. I also cover songs, many of which are Travis-picked!Cheers mate.

    • @DennisAnthonis
      @DennisAnthonis 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      kingdom777866 ... as it turns out there are many variations. As a Travis-picking instructor myself, I suggest learning one pattern at a time. Since every Travis-picking pattern has common elements such as the unrelenting alternating base throughout, played with the thumb on the downbeat. I think people have the hardest time with introducing the fingers to the steady and persistent alternating thumb. Pick one pattern, learn it. Tackle another later. Have you looked at one of my tutorials? Anyway, good luck my friend.
