      I agree they ruined Cordelias character in season 4, she was a well beloved character and the fans were angry about that, they could have managed Charismas pregnancy better than they did, she is not the first actrees getting pregnant in the middle of a series run. I liked season 5 but it would be better with Cordelia on it

    It's why those with money don't want those they have to pay to know who is getting what. If Charisma and James had been talking and had gone in together, either they would have both been offered half what they got on Buffy, or the show would have been deemed too expensive and it would have remained canceled. They're not gonna pay the on screen talent what its worth. They need to profit. This isn't fair. It's business. Most industries have the same problem. You don't pay your employees well AND you boast to the shareholders how much money they're making. It sucks. That's business. If there was a better way to do it, we'd be dong it.

    I don't know that Charisma would have done in season 5. I don't see her going along with the Worfram and Heart change. Maybe she would have refused then teamed up with Spike in wacky duo. Spike wasn't down with W+H at first either or mostly ever really.
    Always thought the working for W+H storyline was stupid, but some good characters and writing still made some good episodes in the last season. Spike did save it.

  • @Farmer_El

    Well, Angel improved with Spike being there, but I think Charisma got horrible treatment with the whole pregnancy storyline. I will say also that I think the whole taking over Wolfram and Hart was a mistake. Angel should have stayed in the hotel.

  • @Ryan_JD
    @Ryan_JD 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1170

    I don't think it's a coincidence that Angel started to suffer when they started screwing with Cordelia's arc too much...the memory loss, getting possessed, sleeping with Connor, etc etc. She became such a badass in the early seasons and I actually think Cordelia and Spike could have carried Angel to 7 seasons. Spike certainly contributed to Buffy's run, and he was right to not take a pay cut to save Angel. It's on Joss for what happened with Charisma.

      I think Charismas pregnacy has alot to do with that, with the 4th season needing an almost entire rewrite, if you listen to her complaints about Whedon alot seems to come down to him resenting being put in that position where his vision for the show is compromised, the same as when the studio forced him to keep Spike in S2 of Buffy

There wouldn't have been another season without James joining and he had every right to ask for what he is worth, every producer will use the excuse about a lack of money to try and get someone for less but there are always ways to keep people in the show if they wanted to - have them in less episodes, Whedon could have taken less as a producer to cover her costs, etc. Whedon looked at it and decided she wasn't needed or important, and her pregnancy probably played a big role in that, and that was it but James isn't at fault for that.

    While I don’t believe James Marsters joining the cast had anything to do with Charisma Carpenter being let go, I really just don’t know. Joss Whedon was apparently really rude to Charisma at times, so my thinking is that if something happened and they needed to “trim the fat” so to speak (genuinely not making a fat joke here, even though Joss apparently called Charisma fat when she was pregnant) for whatever reason, then I imagine Charisma would be the first to go since Joss didn’t seem to respect her, which supports the possibility that James joining the cast is why she was cut.
    But, I still don’t think that’s why she was let go. Angel was always a weird show, from the very first season when they killed off Doyle (I really liked the character) to the last season when they ended the show on a cliffhanger massive battle that they never intended to show. The show had so many weird twists and turns that I honestly don’t think James requesting more money is why Charisma was let go. I think she was let go because Joss wanted her gone for whatever reason. Otherwise, I’d imagine he would have been more respectful to the Cordelia Chase character. Her last season was really rough…

When it was found out that she was pregnant, they could have have cut her out of half the season and brought her back for the full 5th season WITHOUT destroying her entire character. I don’t think hiring James was related to the firing of Charisma because fans wouldn’t have wanted to replace an original cast member for anyone else.

    It seems to me like people are not using their critical thinking. They're giving James marsters way too much credit like he was some kind of Savior to both Buffy and Angel as a show.
    When Joss fired Charisma Carpenter the Execs were probably like "well there is no show. The actress not being there will add a huge hole to the show. (Which it did) So let's just cancel the Series"
    Joss "Wait what if we bring in Spike to Angel?"
    Execs "Well if you can do that then yea you'll get a Season 5"
    You have to listen to James Marsters when he's speaking it seems like the beginning of Season 4 of Angel (beginning of season 7 of Buffy) the execs knew that Charisma Carpenter was going to get fired which is why they weren't planning on renewing it until Joss came up with the idea of getting James Marsters.
    Now the character Spike added nothing to the show (two Vampires with a Soul? Yeah not clever) because the ratings continuously kept dropping which is why we did not get a season 6. All you have to do is use your brains a little bit.

    • @BiggestDawgEver
      @BiggestDawgEver 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are making a lot of unfounded assumptions here. There is no way the execs cared one way or the other if Charisma Carpenter was on the show. That is just not how networks behave. They only cared about ratings and it just so happened that the story that ruined her character and led to her departure was turning off all but the diehard audience. When it came to James Marsters, I guarantee they could not have cared less about him. It was the bankability of the character that delayed the cancelation axe. All Joss had to do was point out the online buzz about the character and the Spike related merch in online stores and the Networks was probably keen. It was also a way for WB to get back a popular character they had lost when Buffy switched networks to UPN for its final few seasons.

      Yeah, Charisma/Cordelia for me was amazing. David/Angel's main offset (and complement), to land and keep in place the core feel and drive of the show. Being integral to Angel as "the show" and its feel you returned to and for. I think those two set the tone, with Alexis/Wesley rounding that off and also as her counterpoint in the direction to push.
      Charisma/Cordelia added great personality, main chemistry, a welcoming access point for the viewer, and a great way to insert the direction to take an event in the episode/series (which I think she and Alexis/Wesley were both huge for).
      James/Spike was also amazing, a powerhouse, but his addition felt more like a new show, "The Adventures of Angel and Spike". Not a new chapter or book, but a different spin-off show altogether. An odd couple buddy duo. I don't think it had to be that way, because James and his Spike character are so versatile that he could have played any number of offset points to the show. But that's what role they inserted him as: the whirlwind.
      And maybe that's what they were going for. Cutting Charisma/Cordelia and Alexis/Wesley took out the grounding framework of the show, and setup the David/Angel and James/Spike to shift into a whole new experience. For that, they probably should have just had them cut the pre-existing cast and setting ties, and thrust them into a whole new arena (setting, world, events, big main storyline, etc.) with driving momentum and discovery of the new tone and centerpoint. Maybe something like Supernatural but with the more energy, momentum, and power that James/Spike brought and was pushing David/Angel back into.

      No it didn't. I liked Charisma Carpenter but there was an expiration date with what they could do with Cordelia Chase. I hate how they handled her character, but after season 3 I was glad to leave her behind and also grateful she got a proper send off in season 5. Frankly though, season 5 was my favorite season. As much as I enjoyed the Cordelia character in my favorite episodes, I really did not care for most of the Cordelia centric episodes or the character's main subplots. Pylea? Nope. Groosalugg? Nope. Romance with Angel? Nope. Ascending to a higher plane? Nope. Sleeping with Connor and then giving birth to Jasmine? Hell no!
      I think it is terrible that she was fired for getting pregnant but I think it is also not great that she initially lied about being pregnant. Season 4 was not meant to be her story and yes, Joss Whedon clearly retaliated. The season 4 we got was altered to accommodate the pregnancy and to unfairly punish Charisma for forcing them to rework the season.
      Lots of actresses on TV get pregnant, and sometimes there are workarounds. In this case though, and I don't mean this in a derogatory way, Charisma was unmistakably pregnant. Her face alone gave it away. Having her sit down or hide behind props or set dressing was not fooling anyone. That meant they had to write the pregnancy into the show and the best way to do that, in theory if not in practice, was to utilize it by tying it to the plot.
      Sorry but Charisma and Cordelia had not been integral to the show since season 1.

That's just her character jumping sharks, in a show and a character that weren't built being about jumping sharks. Who was that for? Or was that just done by Whedon as a way to destabilize the character, break her role and purpose in the ongoing show, and then be able to jettison her out of the show?
      "Sorry but Charisma and Cordelia had not been integral to the show since season 1."

      5) a great way to insert the direction to take an event in the episode/series
      I am in no way saying that the things that I like, were things that everyone else liked. Or that those others who did like (some or all of) those things had to like them in the same ways I did, or for the same reasons.

    That's actually a really interesting insight. It speaks to the importance of honesty and communication in relationships, even business relationships. In a situation where everyone is aware of such restraints, the folks involved can make informed decisions. The TV show legend that demonstrates this is the Big Bang theory cast deciding to take pay cuts to better distribute available salary resources to less well paid cast members (since I'm not one of the cast members, I have no idea if this story is actually true, but it's a demonstration of the importance of communication and solidarity). The general lack of transparency of salaries is detrimental, as is the cultural mindset of money equating to success and things, particularly luxury goods, being status symbols. When we are valued for the way we are seen, what we own or how much money we have in the bank, we separate ourselves from self-love and self-acceptance, resulting in all kinds of issues appearing (feelings coming out as behaviours, essentially).

    News to me, wow. But I doubt it. Leaving Charisma out seemed to have more to do with her relationship with Joss and his overall treatment of her after her pregnancy. This may have been a factor but I doubt it was the primary factor.

    It's too bad the show was cancelled as I liked the format change of Season 5 which resulted in a ratings boost. The WB held the torch after the end of Buffy and they let a bunch of fans go to never return as a result.

  • @doughbafett
    @doughbafett 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Didn't Joss originally want a Faith spinoff with Spike as a ghost mentor(he was technically dead after Buffy Season 7)? So if Eliza Dushku had taken that offer and not done Tru Calling instead, there would've been no Season 5 of Angel?

  • @fleshmasterflex7
    @fleshmasterflex7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That is not the reason. It was Joss Whedons twisted abusive mind and obsessive control he wanted to have over Charisma. He couldn't deal with her being pregnant. There are so many other things that could have been done instead of firing such an important character (this show would have been NOTHING without her) if it was because of the money but that was simply not the reason. Cordelias character started to be ripped apart way before season 5.

  • @apoclypse

    I kind of felt like the show runners on Angel hated Charisma at some point. That 4th season was so bad and they treated the character to poorly it broke my heart because she was literally the heart of the show up until that season. Angel was shaping up to be a complete boring mess, and when Cordelia shows up is when the show started to get better. Whedon is a trash person.

    • @UpRoaryus
      @UpRoaryus ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I dunno, maybe it's just me, but when I read her account of her experiences with Whedon, it tracked a little bit like how when narcissists blame everyone else for their own problematic behavior. I noticed that she seemed like a bit of a prima donna, so I wonder how much of her issues might not have ha something to do with her own entitlement. As an actor on a series, the choices you make in your personal life affect the character you portray, and she apparently made some pretty big changes without consulting anyone about them. For instance, getting her hair cut --that isn't something you do on a whim as a series regular, you need to clear that with the showrunners FIRST. The fact that she didn't was not just inconsiderate but also unprofessional. Apparently, her character had a particular story arc that could not play out because of her pregnancy, so it seems weird that she talks about getting a crappy arc out of spite, since it may have just been crappy because she fucked up a better story that they had to scrap and rewrite on short notice ti accommodate her baby bump. These are thing that are extremely disruptive to a planned production, so I get kind of the feeling that her personality might not make her the easiest actor on set to work with, and maybe she is enough like Cordelia in her own personality that acting self-absorbed isn't a real stretch. Its telling that her favorite episodes are all about HER.

    I think using James' salary as an excuse to get rid of Charisma is totally unfair. Joss was pissed at her long before season 5 was even a consideration. She was on her way out with or without James. It's Joss' playground. If he wanted her gone she was gone either way.

      It amazes me how people that dont know any of these people can chose to just deny their experiences in what happened, just because it doesnt exactly fit their own biased narrative.
      Can no one but Charisma express their thoughts about people they both actual met and give their own explanation to it?
      Why can't both of their experiences be true?
      You and the lot of you in the comment section who instantly thinks "ah but thats not exactly what charisma said last time she spoke about it, so it cant be true", you guys need to learn to think some more!

    I feel like if they had to get rid of a character due to budget constraints, they should have let go of Fred. There just wasn't much to the character until they killed her off and resurrected her as Illyria. Cordy was a breath of sunshine and sarcasm on the one episode for which they brought her back.

      I almost hate to pit the characters against each other this way... but IMO if they had to get rid of a character to save Cordelia (and I'm not 100% Whedon wasn't just trying to get rid of her regardless of money), I'd say Lorne. I like the character just fine, but he was sort of expendable. Cordelia IMO was not.

    • @Faith_Soprano
      @Faith_Soprano 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I don't know much about this obviously, this is all superficial speculation, but my guess would be that neither Lorne nor Fred cost as much as Cordelia. I could be wrong, but it seems like an original cast member that was on Buffy would cost more than these new people who were less known (at least to the show's target audience), so cutting any of the new people wouldn't cover whatever money was necessary to secure Spike on the show.
      If it really was about the money.

    They got rid of Charisma because they intentionally destroyed her character when she got pregnant. It was pure spite on their part. Angel is one of my favourite shows and I honestly like it even better then Buffy sometimes, but I do pretend S4 never happened, and that Cordy coming back in S5 was a failed attempt to get back from the powers that be to stop the apocalypse, and that the whole Wolfram&Hart deal was done in the final events of the S3 finale with Angel being rescued by them.
    Just like I pretend Buffy S6 ended after Once More WIth Feeling, only having the Spike getting a soul arc as the finale and then for S7 to start so I can ignore how they butchered Buffy and Spike with their romantic arc and how toxic Willow and Tara became (I was actually happy she died simply because I couldn't stand watching her enabling Willow's addiction any longer, and I'm a bisexual for crying out loud. The gays are not supposed to be uncomfortable with the gays in a show, but I totally was).

    Buffy would not have lasted that long without James. That's y they needed him when Angel was getting cancelled. Although David was hot and brooding James brought the sexy and the drama. I get y Joss wanted to show the moral of the story but when it comes to ratings your vision trumps your audience. Sometimes writers and directors make successful storylines with just one plot twist. James is a thespian. Too bad Hollywood didn't make any use of him. He would have been as big as Brad Pitt. He is a sensational actor. Maybe Buffy made him pigeonholed. Maybe no one else took him seriously in Hollywood. But his fan base was bigger than Buffy or Angel.

    Angel > Buffy any day of the week. Buffy is way too cheesy in retrospect. And the effects were too bad (Oz's wereworlf suit, anyone?).
    Angel being darker and grittier straight out of the gate made for a much better show I thought. And Wesley's arc is probably the best out of any character in either show.
    I loved the final season Angel, where they manage Wolfram & Hart. And that last scene was spot ot.

    It's odd to me to think of Angel as the "lesser" show than Buffy. I realize it's a spinoff but it has much better writing and stories to me and the characters are better for the most part.
    And it was clear Charisma Carpenter's departure was payback from Joss. He trashed her character then wrote her out. Gunn would have been the obvious choice to write out. As much as I liked Gunn, his character really was flat. They gave him the legal stuff in season 5 but even then, at the end he just ended up being the muscle.

    I loved Cordelia in the early seasons of Angel, but the end of season 4 is seriously one of my least favorite plot archs in the entire franchise. The whole thing felt like it lacked thought, and the character development was terrible. It's not even surprising that the show was cancelled after season 4. That being said, I was sad to see Cordelia be killed off. Her character was absolutely redeemable, and Spike definitely added a great dynamic to the show. It's too bad that things didn't work out for the show in general. It would have been so fun to see where Angel and Spike ended up had they kept going with that arch.
