*I consider myself a casual watercolor artist! I bought an A3 watercolor pad and this paint kit for $5 and $9 respectively, and they've held up excellently to my style of painting (which involves far less water lol) *It's actually pretty prettier easy to get a variety of earthy tones if you mix the colors- and the colors do mix very well. It's a very useful kit!
Good on you for doing this. Kmart’s products are often surprisingly good. I bought a brush washer (bucket style) for five dollars that came with a palette/lid. Also a large bamboo board with a raised edge that I turned upside down to provide an angle for watercolour ($18). The 230 gsm watercolour pad is very thick and good value. It stood up to being wet on the back and stuck to the bamboo board then wet in the front for painting. I did some exercises on it and the paper dried absolutely flat. It was on special for $4.
Thank-you for this video, Becky! I really loved the landscape, and the bunny turned out quite CUTE!! It's very hard to get good results with that kind of paper, but I thought you did a great job with some challenging supplies!! Well done 👏👏👏👏 I've been to Kmart recently and bought these plywood hexagons and circles. I figured if I apply some gesso, they would be perfect for acrylic paintings! Hopefully I get time to work with those very soon, as I would love to know how these supplies go! Thank-you for reminding me to test my own Kmart supplies, too! 🤗🤗
Thank you! I love painting on wood, it's so much nicer than canvas. I am interested in trying some of their other things now, like the marker and paint pens.
What a cute video! Id like to see a video when you use all good supplies: artist watercolor brushes, artist grade paint, cotton watercolor paper and then cheap, cheap budget watercolor paint like this. Itd be nice to see what one could really do with these paints if they were used with professional supplies...Idk maybe I just want to know.. lol. Such a cute little bunny. Thanks for sharing and Much love♥️
Thank you! I did think of doing that in this video, but it was already getting too long so I will save it for another time, and do some comparisons between budget and professional supplies. Thank you for your input, I am glad to know you want to see this too! 😆
Thank you! I am pretty sure the grey toning is from the paper being cheap and unbleached, rather than anything else, lol! It would be so cool to get actual toned grey (or tan) watercolour paper though! ❤
@@BeckyTregear have you tried the 250gsm Stonehenge papers? I prime them with clear Gesso for oil painting sometimes but they come in a range of tones ❤️
I’ve used that paper and considering I am a complete beginner, it made me so frustrated! I then splurged on good paper and the difference was so noticeable! Now, paper is the one thing I will splurge on. I hate my fan brush so much, I regret getting that one.
They turned out well. If you need to paint on a budget there are some supplies you can use. I am very careful about what i purchase as cheap is not quality and quality is not cheap. If its on my shelves it has to be good, I think its easier to paint with good products otherwise I am not happy with my results it just gets too frustrating for me. That said you did a good job thanks for sharing.
I totally agree! Cheap supplies are usually a waste of money because they are so often poor quality. I was surprised that the KMart ones were as good as they were....I was fully expecting an epic disaster. 🤣
Ahh there are no more K-marts where I live! I miss that store!! I’m pretty surprised by those paints- usually watercolor found in stores like that are those awful chalky round pans! That yellow in the landscape painting is so vibrant and pretty you would’ve never thought it came from such a cheap paint set!😱 good thing you just used washi tape, imagine what that blue artist tape would’ve done to the paper🥲😂
I reviewed the same paints, but under a different private label name. They are quite ok for the price. I use them as sketch paints in my cheap sketchbook. High end they are not though. LOL
The fan brush I have disappointed me like yours did... I hate those spikes. Though I can still use it for gouache and such paints for grass and bush-like effects.
Yes these ones were actually ok!😂 KMart also sells a travel watercolour set which is even better and costs about $3! I have a couple of KMart videos from a few months ago, that shows that one and other art supplies too. 🙂
Oh, how funny! I'm pretty sure I used the same reference photo you did in this video: th-cam.com/video/ancyg-BrMn8/w-d-xo.html (also with cheap watercolors!). I love your bunny, particularly the striped background. Yes, I can see the texture on the gray-toned watercolor paper, and would be hesitant to use a lot of layers on it, as you said. Fun video!
Haha it wouldn't surprise me that it's a popular picture. Same with that sea turtle....I keep seeing it everywhere! I will check out your video, I don't remember seeing that one. I am pretty sure the grey toning is unintentional, lol. Thanks for watching, I shall be checking out your new vid soon! ❤
It is definitely marketed as Watercolour paper, and has the texture of cold press, so I guess you could use pencils on it, but the texture would be a little annoying. I find coloured pencils work better on smoother paper, like a hot press :-)
they seem to work pretty well, for 25 bucks couldnt really complain about them. you know you are not going to get the best supplies, but they do the job in the end if this is all you can get 😀

I'm glad you're enjoying the paints! 😊
A really good review again, the fan brush will be good fir trees and grasses and special effects maybe. Thank you again for your reviews. Cheers!
I've noticed they now have made their watercolour pad thicker 230gsm, and it's more hot pressed without texture, but the paper is stronger.
Interesting, I'll have to check it out!

They have some great value items! I bought some of their storage bins and they are excellent as well. 😊
Gorgeous.... I really like the blue pink rabbit. So cute. Thank you for this budget friendly supply Video. Best wishes from Germany by Judith
Thank you! I hope you're well over there. 😊

I like how the tree landscape turned out and your bunny was so cute. I've not seen a grey toned watercolor paper before. :)

Fan brushes are very difficult to use! I am glad you found some nicer paper; as you say, it makes all the difference. 😊

i might have to try out the water brush. i like to use them with ink as a makeshift kuretake brush pen. will see if it leaks or not...
It seems like a pretty decent waterbrush and should work well with ink. I didn't experience any leaks when I used this one to swatch the paints 🙂

All of the paper would be stuck to the blue tape, lol! I was also surprised at how decent they were and I was fully expecting a chalky mess, lol!
I've seen them i was intrigued about them great review.
They’re not bad for the price! Some cheap paint sets are abysmal. 😂
I reviewed the same paints, but under a different private label name. They are quite ok for the price. I use them as sketch paints in my cheap sketchbook. High end they are not though. LOL
I am sure they go under many labels, but come out of the same factory, lol!
The fan brush I have disappointed me like yours did... I hate those spikes. Though I can still use it for gouache and such paints for grass and bush-like effects.
Someone else also commented that they are meant to spike up to make grass etc effects, which now makes sense to me, lol!
Thank you for testing these so I didn't have to spend my money to find out myself! I am addicted to collecting art supplies and addicted to Kmart! :P
Happy to oblige! 😂
Would you be able to glue a couple of layers of paper together to make it a bit sturdier? Would this be better to do before or after painting?
I'm not sure...I have never tried that. I might need to do a future experiment to see if it would make a difference! 😊
That's soo pretty😍😍😍
You're soo talented 💕
Btw I subscribed 😊💗
Thank you 😊💟
I am surprised how good these watercolors are. I tried watercolord Daler Rowney Simply there wasn't any pigment in them it is just colored clay.
Yes these ones were actually ok!😂 KMart also sells a travel watercolour set which is even better and costs about $3! I have a couple of KMart videos from a few months ago, that shows that one and other art supplies too. 🙂

Thanks for that. I will try the paint set if I can buy it in Western Australia Kmart 👍
Hopefully you can find it! I think I saw them around Christmas, so I would say the watercolours are still an item that they stock?
Very cool 😊🌸
😸💕

The fan brushes are supposed to seperate like it did. Good for fur and grasses. Like the video though
Well that would explain it then! Haha I can't believe I didn't think of that, lol. 😂😳
Is this paper better for pencils? Oil or wachsbased pencils?

That's what I think too....at least the quality is decent enough to achieve something with them!
