i don't know what's more impressive Godwinson and he's army walking 44 miles a day or 1 Norwegian blocking the English Advance alone
Imagine 14,000 men marching that far that fast. Serious dedication to getting to the battle unexpectedly.
Not to diminish that viking’s honour but holding a bridge bottleneck with an axe is somewhat less impressive in comparison imo.
That lone viking story is most probably just a myth but the force March of English is true, so yeah Godwinsons march was more impressive
@@thesilentassassin1167A lot of good it did him. Hastily gathering and marching an army, defeating one claimant. Then having to turn round and march all way back to figHT another claimant with his fresh Army
Speed was certainly needed but maybe just one day of rest or one additional day of travel so his troops weren't so worn out. Yes, more innocent English would die but perhaps Billy The bastard have lost aT Hastings
I'd say trying to float in a barrel in water.
Both? Both. Both is good.

But a 1 on perception...
Endurance/Stamina/Fortitude would be the more important trait there.

Man, William of Normandy was so lucky
If the Vikings didn’t weaken the Saxon army, William would of had a hard time invading England.
The Saxons were definitely tired from marching so much.
@@thesnoopmeistersnoops5167 but better boring than being persecuted and enslaved by the Normans for centuries and completely changing their culture.
@@bananaskinnedcow6064 colonization is slavery, they pretty much turned England into a French colony and persecuted the local saxons.
@@bananaskinnedcow6064 He still invaded England to obtain land, power and wealth. And his armies still persecuted the saxons, no different from slavery. William was a bastard and shouldn't have taken England, even English historians and Tolkien himself hate him.
Its a shame the legendary berserkers name was lost to history
His name was Þjóðólfr Sterki-Einn (Tjodolf Strong-One)
@@POLITICUS-DANICUS If this is true.. lol our Scandinavian names and descriptors have always been so weirdly to the point.

"Dramatic Parley" The story mentions Godwinson telling Hardrada He'd get "Six feet of good English Earth. Perhaps slightly more, as he was a tall man."
True innit
And then Harold got shot in the face. Fin.
Only to be killed by William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings a few weeks later... how sad
The man was running marathons up and down the country fending off invasions lol
@@kingt0295if the Normans invaded 2 month's later instead of 2 weeks he could have had a chance, but his army was too exhausted from the battle of Stamford bridge and the forced long marches
Pretty reductive to put it like that he truly was a great military leader, someone’s just mad over something that happened a Millenia ago for some reason 🤡
@@hoplite723tired or not the heavy horse would still destroy them, would dominate the battlefield for centuries sorry but no chance.
Harold Hardrada would have had a chance at defeating both had he not been so arrogant. The northern regions of England had a very high Scandinavian population.

Under full armor and weaponry nonetheless!
Harold Godwinson laughs at such weakness.
Harold was a monster of his own, a real life Stannis
They travelled on horseback.
They fought as infantry though, because the Saxons used the shield wall as much as the Vikings.

@@Aquila476William the bastard of Normandy
To the lone viking, a tribute!
Upon the sturdy Stanford Bridge he stood,
A son of the North, carved of ice and wood,
In his veins flowed the ancient Nordic blood,
Lone, resolute, in the face of the flood.
His axe gleamed under the morning sun's crown,
A Viking warrior of immortal renown,
One man against an army, he would not bow,
With valor in his heart, he made a solemn vow.
"Here on this bridge, I stake my final stand,
No enemy shall pass, none shall tread our land,
With Odin's might, I clutch my brother's brand,
Against the foreign tide, immovable as sand."
Echoed his roar across the steel-grey water,
Stirring fear in the heart of the invading slaughter,
Like Thor's thunder, his voice filled the air,
A hymn of defiance, a warrior's prayer.
His axe swung wide, his shield held firm,
In his eyes, the Nordic fires did burn,
Upon the bridge, the enemy took their turn,
Only to meet their end, their fate confirmed.
Bodies piled high, his shadow cast,
Fierce and fearless, till his very last.
His legend woven in the Nordic past,
An epic tale, to the icy winds broadcast.
Then came the arrow, unseen, unheard,
Struck the Viking, swift as a bird,
Yet his spirit, undaunted, undeterred,
His final battle cry in the distance echoed.
The Bridge of Stanford, painted in blood and strife,
Witness to his end, but also his immortal life,
In that final stand, in death's embrace,
Lived the eternal glory of the Viking race.
Through fjords and mountains, his legend rings,
A tribute to the warrior, the echo sings,
A Viking's oath, on raven's wings,
In our hearts, the lone guardian forever clings.
In the Northern sky, a new star gleamed,
The warrior's soul, by Valhalla redeemed.
His saga scribed in the Northern lights' beam,
In his honor, we remember, and we dream.
In the whispers of the wind, his tale is told,
A lone Viking, bold and cold,
Upon the Stanford Bridge, he forever holds,
A symbol of courage, of a spirit uncontrolled.
Raise your horns high, let the mead flow,
To the lone Viking, a tribute we bestow,
Sing his saga, let his memory glow,
In our hearts, the seed of bravery sow.
Forever, his story in the Nordic soul grows,
In the frost-kissed lands where the cold wind blows.
Pissed off farmers go poke poke.
I cried
man this is amazing 👏
Wow 🥹

Sire!! should we shoot arrows into that giant dane holding us up?
King: NO - finally the time has come good soldiers…. BRING UP THE BARREL OF FLOTATION.
The Dane was too close with the English infantry, they couldn't fire at him without shooting their own men in the back
@@admiralthrawnstein9943 the concept of walking away for 2 minutes so some archers could kill the guy was sadly lost on those 40 englishmen.
@@nick-hu1nx That could have led to Harald's forces pushing up reinforcements to the bridge, prolonging the battle. Momentum and initiative must be maintained to achieve decisive victory.
@@crowe6961 those reinforcements wanted to leave, so i doubt they would have.
they didn’t have any archers in the english army
Godwinson was underrated as hell, William only won because his forces were depleted from Hadrada
If there was one thing in history I would change, it would be for William’s fleet to get destroyed by a storm and wash up as corpses on the English beaches
Godwinson spent the entire year waiting for him with the army assembled, only after he had to let the people go back to their lands in September that Harald invaded the north, so GodWinson went North with the men he had left. William the Bastard found no opposition in the South. After defeating Harald, Godwinson thought it would be best to rush back to the south instead of rest and gather more people.
So he faced William with a depleted and tired army intermingled with some peasants, apparently he put up a tough fight to William, William's forces had to retreat and this led to some peasants to break formation to pursuit them and this was their demise.
@@user-qh4dr1vy9d i do t know for sure but I pretty sure it is still debated on whether it was a route or a feigned retreat on the Norman side
I think there was a battle in medieval total war 1 like this. One "beserker" on a bridge that would just cut down your units like nothing, so frustrating lol
What a beast that man on the bridge!!!
@@tommysoliz3064 kind of but he had a perfect place to make a last stand Think about it, the bridge was barely wide enough for 2 men to walk side by side and was humped. So he had the high ground and they could only get to him one at a time. While they tried to scramble up to him, he just slammed the huge axe down on them and waited for the next. There were a handful of defenders and they'd have been swapping round to preserve energy. Incredible that the last survived for so long but makes sense when you think about where he was stood. Amazing that the Norse he bought time for didn't get ready even though their camp was on that side. Even more amazing is the English didn't just use a volley of arrows when they saw the bridge, any commander would have seen a handful of men could slow an army down in that position, and they'd surprised the Norse, yet the defenders were buying them time to get over their surprise. So a quick volley to clear the bridge and start moving skirmishers over to keep the Norse from getting ready makes perfect sense. Yet they wasted an hour or 2 on them. The number he killed was recorded by an Englishman too, think of that. They hated the Norse and saw them as barbarians and heathens, yet praised one man and said he'd killed that many. That almost surely means the number is wrong cos they wouldn't praise a heathen scum with so many proud English Christian deaths, would they?. If it was a Norse telling the tale, I'd have said half it cos they loved to boast and tell stories. , but as it's an English man I'd say add more.
I just know that lone Norwegian on the bridge will dine with the brave in the great halls of Valhalla, forever
At this point in history, it's more likely that he was Christian, at least semi-Christian, like Harald himself.
Odin has that man as one of his personal champions and sitting right by him at the feasting table.
Bro just came in his pants thinking about brave Norwegian men
@@Gabriel-ip6me Odin doesn't care. Einherjar are Einherjar.

Hardrada's whole life fascinating and now he's generslly just known as the guy that softened-up England for the Normans.
This is one of my favorite battles in history because it showcases the threat of the Vikings very well and why people fear them even though they lost.
When you are the MVP but your team is just not good enough
Noble Six?
Objective....
Survive....
They had to race back south right after this famous victory . His army must have been bloody exhausted when it faced the Normans . It’s a credit to them that they almost pulled it off after Stamford Bridge .
Williams timing was absolutely perfect and he was no slouch on the battlefield either
That one Norwegian must be a berserker
Hardradas men did not expect to fight, since it was hot they were given permission to leave their chainmail on their boats miles away..... A message was sent to backup guarding the boats the men armored up and ran miles to back up hardradas. It was too little too late and they were all slain
Harald Hadrada. The Last Viking.
When your medieval army has a John Wick type
The real last vicking they should make a movie about him I would see it.
Had Harold Hardrada not invaded the north William of Normandy would never have succeeded in his invasion at Hastings
The Saxons cannot catch a break with these damn Vikings
There was a man like this for the Turks called Bayezid Thunderbolt, who would somehow move armies like going through a portal. He was also killed by a bigger fish soon after, the vicious Tamerlane.
The Turks have great warrior history!
I've heard it said that this one legendary berserker was the only reason the Viking army didn't instantly fold; he gave his comrades time to get their shit together and arrange themselves.
...and then the Normans attacked😮
lucky bastards they were ,was unfair for Godwinson ,but history remembers him well
@@dand7763 Keep crying, they had no chance to beat the chad french norman army of william anyway.
@@amind8324 war against 2 sides in the same time is hard...he succeed against vikings but that forced march on foot from north to south , his soldiers were tired ,no time to rest...while normans were fresh and had high morale...just bad luck for Godwinson
@@amind8324 Apart from they did, and they were winning! The shield wall was intact and the French were getting massacred against it - but they pretended to retreat, and Godwinson's men broke formation to run them down, but the French re-grouped and killed them. Without this ruse, the French would have lost and William would have been killed.

Good soldiers don’t make great kings

On horseback in the river ? Or was the horse and rider both in a barrel and under the bridge?
There are multiple accounts of the event from both sides, impossible to know the exact truth. Its pointless to argue facts from an event a millenium ago

The Saxons rode horses on that 4 day journey though. They didn't walk 44 miles a day with all their armour.
Once in battle, they dismounted.
That Dane experienced the medieval equivalent of having to 1v9.
One thing I never hear mention of, and a great theory to debunk the lone stand by the Norwegian is where we’re the English archers? English archers were among the best in the world at the time, in an army 14,000 strong there wasn’t a couple guys with a bow to shoot at him?
While yea pretty sure they had archers or skirmishers, this is the saxon army, based mostly on spear infantry. The longbow focus came later with norman kings
@@juliusnorr3041 hardrada was killed with a arrows to the throat though
"King Harald's Saga" is such great reading
I love this recount, so badass
Such a lackluster end to a man with such an adventurous and glory filled life
This is just great , after a video of kings and generals you got also shorts Who comes handy thanks k and g
What's more impressive is the parlay, with Godwinson himself going out to ask for them to surrender, and they didn't even realize until he had left their lines
This story changes every time I hear it.
Thats a Zhang Fei moment.
Hardrada had a fascinating life.
About 10 or 15 years ago by chance on the banks o the river a horde of silver was found . It was thought to be part of Hardrada's war chest
Many of the Vikings joined him for his defence against the French Days later.
Hardrada apparently attempted to write his death poem with an arrow in his neck.
As much as I'm Team Saxon for this battle, that Viking will live on forever as the ultimate chad.
Team Anglo-Saxon ftw
And Harold then had to march south to Hastings to fight William the Conqueror, with a depleted tired army. It was Harold's last battle, and the last of the Saxon kings.
That one man army was my greatx9 grand father. We still fight alone to this day!
185 miles in 4 days?!
The unknown warrior that held the bridge was a great feat if he was not killed in a cowardly way i reakon he would held his ground untill he got tired the unknown warrior
The barrel move was a "spear in the jewel"
If you know you know.
I remember this part for Vinland saga
The warrior on the bridge is on Odins side right now for sure
Hadrada’s biggest mistake was underestimating his opponent. He was probably the most experienced soldier during his time, having worked as a mercenary for half the world at that point. That mistake was probably done out of carelessness
so... they got 40 of their men killed... until somebody remembers, that longbows exist...???
The Viking was too close to the English infantry, if bows fired they would kill their own men
Imagine losing a bridge battle, couldn’t be me
Man I think people forgot what Hardrada had been through, fighting in civil wars, venturing to the Keivan Rus, and arriving at mikligard the legendary Constantinople as a varangian, fighting and defeating islamic armies, killing the young Byzantine emperor after the old one died, and returned to norway as King. I bet some of the men he brought were veterans of his adventures. Maybe if Hardrada had fought the English with his full army with their armor. I mean the English had mostley conscripted inexperienced countrymen to fight with only a few thousand elite Huskarls. But who knows
This battle and the following battle against the Norman's at Hastings is covered by the English writer G.A. Henty in his book Wolf the Saxon it's an amazing read
Hardrada as a badass too. Chief of the Varangian guard for the Byzantine empire.
"The Viking king Hardrada lay dead with an arrow to his throat" (1066 flash game)
You should do like a full video of a video like Björn ironside, Ragnar Lothbrock, Harald hardrada, Harald finhar, you know people like that. It would be cool
Vikings were humbled here. Never mess with the English
That one lone guy was definitely using cheat codes in bannerlord 2 until he got caught and banned from the server. What a shame
I was searching Mourinho's first loss at Stamford Bridge and I ended up in this video.
French general Thomas Alexandre Dumas similarly held a bridge alone against an entire Austrian cavalry squadron during the revolutionary wars. Supposedly by the time reinforcements arrived he had killed 7-8 enemy and wounded many others.
The og “you shall not PASS!!!!”
i love how in the 1066 war for england when an army uses a shield wall they lose😂

I couldn’t imagine rucking 47 miles a day for 4 days straight. Those dudes must’ve had God tier leg muscles
I always loved this story. Even if Chad on the bridge still fell.
Can you make a video about the siege of haithabu? Haithabu was the most important Danish city during the viking age, and was attacked by Harald Hardrada using fire ships
That one Viking from Norway is living through all this centuries with respect among all the Warriors who hear about him... he must be having so much fun and pride in Valhalla...
Given that this happened in 1066, it's fairly likely he was Christian. Harald was.
