  • In this video, I take the ATU-100 antenna tuner on a portable ham radio adventure to a mountain summit (Summits on the Air), testing its performance in the field. As an essential piece of equipment for any ham radio operator, the ATU-100 is designed to match the impedance of the antenna to the radio, ensuring maximum power transfer and reducing interference. Throughout the video, I showcase the versatility and convenience of the ATU-100 as I use it to tune my antenna on the fly, allowing me to communicate with other ham radio enthusiasts from the summit. Join me on this exciting outdoor excursion as I put the ATU-100 to the test and demonstrate its capabilities in real-world conditions. Location is Apache Butte W7A/MN-095 on 4 March 2023

    BNC connectors are fine for QRP but not really for 100W, I have seen them fail at 50W. There is also a version of the tuner that can also attach a wire antenna and ground/counter poise directly along with the normal coax connector. You can set the tuner to full auto so you do not have to push the button to tune.

      Good info and agree about problems with BNCs for non-QRP stations. Thanks

    Hi Charlie,
    Nice activation and honest review of the ATU-100. Have watched Steve's review. Will be starting my POTA career soon and may need an antenna tuner to go with the FT-891. You and Sandy stay safe. 73 WJ3U

    Charlie, thank you for always showing us the route/land/brush on your hikes - it really helps us plan for our SOTA hikes (especially in our old age)!!

    Great video and SOTA activation! Curious, did you modify your ata100 to work with the FT-817? If so, what mods did you perform to the unit? KD4GES

    • @RedSummitRF
      @RedSummitRF  ปีที่แล้ว

      No mods. I just made sure to deselect kyr in the menu, which is the keyer in the radio.

    Nice little tuner om. One day we’ll find you an affordable kx2. Hehe. Do you not use the efhw anymore ? Like the link better I assume

    • @RedSummitRF
      @RedSummitRF  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      kx2 would be nice, but still having fun with the 817. I have the efhw in my bag and thought about pulling it out again. I actually need to get the half square back up and a new one Malen gave me. So many antenna's so little time haha!

    Hi Charlie. Looking good up there. I would suggest taking that tuner, and using it inline with your linked dipole. Would be curious to see what the efficiency readout is for linked dipole from same circuitry measuring it for an EFHW. Keep up the good work and be safe up there.

      Not a bad idea, Mark. That would be a great test. I have a long list of video ideas. Not sure when I'll get to it but I added to the list. Thanks

    Hi Charlie thanks to your video I can breath a sigh of relief I have just purchased the ATU-100-0a to use with my Yaesu FT 817nd then realising I may have to modify it for max 5Watts but I see by your comment no mods were needed I'll be using it with a JPC-7 antenna I only need the tuner for 80, 17, 10 Meters. Cheers from down under VK3CXP

    Another good one Charlie. I have two of these tuners and I get mixed results. BUT, for the most part, they do work.

    • @RedSummitRF
      @RedSummitRF  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I have seen a few people indicate there are issues with them, but like you said, they work "for the most part"

    Thanks Charlie. I am still playing with the 51 foot EFRW into small LC tuner no extra outboard baluns. Can't get my head around the extra loss with out board baluns plus insertion loss from the tuner its self. I could hear you that day on 10m quite well + your pile up, which proves it was radiating quite well. WoW on way to 4 X MG great work. vk5cz ..

      Hi Ian - yeah just pushing along towards the next milestone. I have such a limited understanding about how all this antenna stuff works. I don't understand all those loss issues either. Very cool that you heard me . . . did you happen to try chasing on this summit or another one last week? I know I heard a VK in there but too much QSB.

    Great stuff Charlie. There is a reason a dipole is used for a reference antenna. I have always thought someone needs to make a tuner to fit in the battery box of the 817 / 818. I will be down in April.

    • @RedSummitRF
      @RedSummitRF  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      oh now that is an amazing idea! Antenna tuner in the battery compartment. I'd buy that.
