  • 18th Of February, 1977 - Armed soldiers raid Kalakuta Republic, the home of Afrobeat singer Fela Kuti, leading to the death of Funmilayo Anikulapo Kuti.
    Kalakuta Republic, the home and communal compound of Nigerian musician and activist Fela Kuti, was raided by the Nigerian military on this day in 1977. The raid resulted in the burning down of the compound, and Fela Kuti's mother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, was thrown from a window, leading to her death.
    The raid on Kalakuta Republic was carried out by the Nigerian military under the orders of then-president, Olusegun Obasanjo.
    Some said the raiding happened because of a Fela Kuti's song tittled "Zombie" where he attributed the army as an irrational being who just follow every orders.
    Another said, it was a retaliation for the beating of a soldier by Fela's boys a day before the place was raided.
    Also, ex Police chief, Babankowa claimed the raid was for search of missing girls.
    Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti was thrown from a second-floor window, Following the raid she was hospitalized and eventually lapsed into a coma. She died on 13th of April, 1978 as a result of her injuries.
