South Africa had simply outlived its geostrategic usefulness. The US/UK then meddled directly in influencing the boundaries of the negotiated settlement. It’s worth researching these realities by looking at the work of academics/hostorians who have accessed records in the USA, amongst others, through laws providing access to information.

Wasn't apartheid largely gone by that point? Yes, they should have ended all segregation and discrimination in where you can live and public accommodations.
