    I’m trying to understand the concept in 21:33 where it get tighter and looser. So with heat it automatically tightens itself? No maintenance required?

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Great question! Just like the power lines....when the outside temps get cold...metal draws up as the cold molecules get tighter....when it gets warm or hot outside...the metal expands. That's why there is a tension curve in the high tensile woven wire to keep it tight despite the temperature. We don't "hard staple" to the post so the wire can expand and contract with the changing weather and temps. Thus the wire is always moving, but the post isn't being pulled loose from the ground and the staple isn't under constant pressure. Pretty cool huh?

    Don’t forget the best thing to help keep a fence strong is maintenance. We put up a section of fence about 1/2 mile exactly 49 yrs ago this week. Memorial Day 1974. We’ve kept it clean, tight, and made sure the post were in good shape. My folks are gone now but the fence is still holding cows. I wish I has the $$$ to rent such equipment, but I don’t. So I’ll have to rely on old standard techniques. Like making sure the post don’t hold water as stated in the video. And making sure we string and wrap the wire correctly so it doesn’t twist the corner post, and such. Thanks for the video.

    I personally appreciate all the content. Can all us small farmers afford to rent that equipment or hire the contractors? No we can’t. I have learned tons of techniques from them that I use on my farm when I build my fences. Without this content, the only way I could learn it would be by hiring them, which I personally can’t afford. But I can take what I learn from there and apply it.

    Man, oh man, I wish we had all that technology to redo my 90 acres of my small farm way back in the 1980's. That is way so much better than the metal fence poles. When we bought the place the fences were particularly sad. It to us close to two years to replace the fences. Digging holes, putting the posts in, cement. The original fence posts were from 80 years before and made from local pinion trees. Then pounding the posts, metal and wood. Can't tell you how many hours under the hot desert sun my family and I sweated till the sun went down. Yup, wish we had that stuff back then. So much easier and better than what the old timers used back in the day. Great video. 👍

    In Australia all those posts would be galvanised steel pipe with caps and the intermediate line posts would be majority star shaped pickets .
    Electric wire would also be on offset brackets both sides a lot of times as it deters livestock better and minimises kangaroo damage to the fence .

Are there any suggestions for the majority of us who cant afford to pay others to come in from across the country to put up our fence and arent youtubers getting sponsored fencing. Resources? A way to get together with other local farmers to help one another? I mean im about to put a fence around 30 acres myself so everybody wish me luck. You're setting yourself up for failure every time you say "can't" this is psychologicaly and subconsciously training your brain to give up because you "can't" ...never say "can't" always ask....."how can I" and you'll find a way. Can't trains you to stop looking for a way. Build your fence once...build it right. It's not so far fetched for you to buy 100 posts, 3 rolls of wire and start building it my friend. Rent a post driver or hire a contractor to drive them. You have the choice....buy quality and build quality. There's enough info out there for you to learn exactly what to do here on TH-cam. Again....your comment speaks volumes...."Luck", "can't", "forced into buying" don't let your perceptions get you down. Be strong, confident and find a way to be successful or you'll never persevere. The words..."I CAN DO THIS" and "HOW CAN I AFFORD TO" are what you should be saying. No farmer ever started farming saying he "can't" and no doctor ever became a doctor because he/she was "lucky"....nobody is forcing you to do anything. Save, work hard, prioritize and execute your tasks one at a time my friend....you got this!! Can't never could...and never will get anywhere.....you are in charge of your destiny my friend!

    Hi, Josh. I am an avid watcher of your channel and that of Greg Judy. As you know, Greg advises an offset fence of high tensile wire (powered) to keep cattle off of an existing perimeter fence. I have purchased 150 acres in Central Texas with an existing perimeter fence. I intend to carry some cattle, but primarily St Croix sheep. Do you think I can use a “belly bumper” offset powered wire to attach to the existing perimeter fence (consisting of barbed wire)? If so, I can then easily mow along the fence line without having to worry about an offset fence and the inability to mow the grass right up to the existing perimeter fence. Thank you for your advice.

      the staple should have a small amount of clearance so the wire can move.....1/16th ish of an inch....other's are welcome to give input as well if they wanna comment on this. Stapling down the wire is called "hard stapling" we don't hard staple because wire expands and contracts...thus it needs to move so it doesn't work itself loose

      If you don’t like the content, you can always just move on. No need to troll the comments section. It’s his channel, he can run it how he wants. Just because he was in a fortunate situation…why would that make another person mad or snarky?

      We do our own fencing, however it’s great to see the techniques the pros do. If you work with two different farmers, you’ll likely see two different techniques. I appreciate Josh getting all these folks together and getting knowledge on how I can do things better. What I’ve seen is that one of our fences lasts a generation, that means I’m going to have some very serious fencing to do between now and the next decade. We have different styles of fencing depending on the purpose. I appreciate the knowledge provided in a short amount of time without having to travel and chat with other farmers. Thanks, Josh! 🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸

    This is the kinda fence you can get when you don't have to pay for anything or do any of the work yourself!

      I can assure you that Josh pays plenty and does more than his fair share of the work.
