Thank you, you’ve saved me a fortune. When I bought some spare lights the guy at the store mentioned it might be worth buying a couple of starters. Had no idea what he was on about. Light went, replaced it to be confronted with just light at the ends of the tube. Looked up fluorescent lights and starters and your zero filibuster video had me up and running in no time. Thank you.

Exact same thing happened to me. Hopefully when i buy a new starter, the new tube will still work and i havent blown it from putting it in with the old starter

Thanks, I knew nothing about the 'starter' and was wondering why a brand new tube would not work. Followed your advice and all in order now, thanks again.

Do note that if you live in North America and have a fixture that is at least 3 ft long, it will most likely contain a rapid start, instant start, or electronic ballast and not have a starter. Just wanted to put that out there so that people don’t get confused when they don’t see a starter.

MAKE SURE you get right size. I also never heard of a 'starter' before. Went to Lowes for help after bulb replacement did not fix problem with older 24'' GE fluorescent fixture. Young employee sold me a GE FS-25 starter. Got home, easily removed old starter. Tried to insert the new starter, but it would not screw in. It just kept spinning round. Tried to remove but it is catching on something. Removed screws hoping to get to back side & see what is stopping it from coming out, but there is a cover part that prevents me from seeing. Now I have to remove the fixture from difficult area above sink, near the ceiling. Called Lowes to see if they could do a cross reference, since my old starter is a FS-22. Every employee I have spoken to has been clueless. Also called GE and they were no help, since they don't even make the Starter. They just slap their name on it. Jasco makes all the GE fixtures, now but they don't make fluorescent. Only LED... plus Jasco employees barely speak English. Was hoping to trouble shoot for an inexpensive repair, but probably gonna have to replace the light. I ''THINK'' a FS-2 Starter replaces the FS-22, but so far cannot find any knowledgeable customer service. Have spent 4 days and about 8 hours calling and reservation. Also called Phillips and Sylvania, but no help. Yep, I'm pissed...especially at G.E. The company is a shell of what it used to be.

I tried to replace the starter in our communal laundry but couldn't get it to click back in, someone called a local electrician we use and he had to use a gripper tool to force the new starter in, so not always straightforward..

  • @HeliosWorksAV
    @HeliosWorksAV 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

So simple - turn anti-clockwise! Thanks! Was about to rip the whole thing from the ceiling and start over!
FYI if you are replacing a traditional fluorescent tube with an LED you have to remove the starter. LEDs don't need starters. Mine is brighter and there is no wait time at all between flipping the switch and the light turning on. Will never go back to fluorescent.

Was appalled to hear about my acquaintances’ issues at Radiance House in Cambridge-damp, mould and poor fire safety. People’s health are deteriorating and lives are at risk for this. They tried to resolve the issues over six years, with no help at all from PfP. When the tenants union ACORN tried to join their self advocacy, PfP ignored the set meeting and refused to speak to them. Incredible disregard for the inhabitants. I hate to think what’s happening across the country in PfP homes. PfP will you take action?

For anyone struggling to fit a new starter, I found that after offering it up into the hole, I actually had to turn it slowly ANTI-clockwise in order for the starter's contacts to "click" into place - and then turn it clockwise a few degrees to secure it.

I have one of these, the light stopped working. I changed the tube and also the starter, but i don't think i replaced with exact same models. The light tube was same watts L58W but the lumens value was a bit higher (brighter tube). The old starter was Osram 111 4 - 65W, 80W, the new one is 4-65W
the problem is after I changed these, the light worked fine for a few days, but now whenever i switch the light on it trips the RCD fuse and the power cuts off, maybe some short circuit issue. BUt could this be due to the starter.
I notice that when i turn the light on, the starter flashes quite bright.

I cannot get the tube back in place, the tube doesn't go down far enough to be able to do the turn. Have tried pulling the end cap but that's not doing anything. Is it because my fitting is approx 20 years old?

It must be the type of UC base I have, although it’s the same process for removing & replacing the starter fuse, but I haven’t seen a video or a comment concerning my problem , it’s always extremely difficult to align the starter with the corresponding holes, & then turn it clockwise, the video makes it look so simple, the way it should be, but I have to get lucky, and it’s not just one, there all a problem. My son, and brother couldn’t do it either, without a struggle, am I the only one with the problem?

My tube won't turn enough to line up with the slot even when I pull the end cap. There must be another trick to it. Also my starter is under the the tube,so unless I can get the tube off I can't get the starter out! I have turned the starter and it came loose and will come out easily if I can get the tube off. but of course the tube is blocking it.

Assuming you have replaced both the tube and the starter, it is possible if you have a 6ft tube you have fitted a standard starter, you need one specifically for 70w tubes

    • @bradbttl

Yes perfectly safe, the likely cause of this is that you have a 6ft tube and are using a standard starter, you need to buy one specifically for 6ft tubes

Hi Places for People, I just wanted to ask why you’ve been ignoring your tenants Ash and Janelle, and the tenants union ACORN who is representing them? They are living in unreasonable, unsafe conditions - damp and mould everywhere, poor fire safety. How do you think its fair to provide that kind of housing? Is that the kind of space you would want to live in? You didn’t turn up to the meeting ACORN organised with you to discuss this and come to an agreement with Ash and Janelle? Why not? Will you come to the table and talk?

Is it a hard turn when you turn your tube anti-clockwise? Because my tube is removed by pulling one side to let the other side be removed. I tried turning it, but it wont come out.
