How sad so many were just tossed away. Their parents were the cause of this. My Aunt was a deaf mute. She was in the family and part of us. She helped my mom who was her twin raise not only us but all my nefews and neices. We loved her had our own way of talking with her. She passed away about 39 years ago but i will never forget all the love she gave us. She also help with my children. So much love in her heart.

I live close to Pennhurst. In junior high we were forced to take a trip there for health class. I will never forget seeing a young, handsome male in his 20's who seemed perfectly normal in every way yet was a patient at this facility. He took an interest in our class and seemed to be observing us with longing to maybe be a part of who we were on the "outside" I will also never forget our confusion on the bus ride home as to why this young man was a patient. The only indication that he was in any way "different" was the patient shuffle he had learned to imitate. To this day I wonder what ever became of him. Pennhurst is now a "haunted attraction" at Halloween time. Very sad.

Some cultures would celebrate those born differently and treat them with dignity and respect.
Some cultures and religions blamed the parents for delivering a disabled child.
These parents could get divorced because of this shame, blame, and guilt.
That stigmata would place pressure on the family.
    Ignorance and fear is horrible.

My best friend suffered for most of her life with horrible psychological issues. She has been so strong over the years. God bless those who had to endure the torture that place inflicted upon them. Purposeful ignorance was a convenient way for this hospital to end up the way it did. There is never an excuse for inhuman cruelty the patients received.
That place is haunted as a graveyard. I loved the video!👍🏻😊❤️

My sister was a Shrinners kid, she was in hospital so often at times for months, so they did hospital school for her, so I am not surprised to see education books in a hospital which had children. Also medical books were available to staff.
