I had the immense pleasure of meeting Diana in the mud 90’s. My husband is Sephardic and we knew her via the Sephardic synagogue. She was just a lovely woman’s and very open to discussing her experiences. Amazing woman. Joy to be able to listen to her testimony.
I’m listening to this in 2021. This beautiful lady is no longer with us .May she Rest In Peace.A wonderful person.
I stumbled upon her story by chance really and ended up listening the whole way through. This project is really something special.

I found the lady rude when this wonderful woman didn't understand her question.
The Questions are very important as draws out critical information that may have been forgotten + as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr said, " Silence is Betrayal".
I agree .. the narrative is broken up by the questions too much.
The interviewer obviously wasn’t trained, cutting her off midsentence a few times. Nevertheless, her story is clear and amazing! And she shows great patience and understanding with the untrained interviewer. A lesson for us all.

Me. Golden’s testimony is heart- wrenching. I so appreciate her sharing her experience. I wish the interviewer had been better trained. The interviewer rushed Ms. Golden, interrupted Ms. Golden and actually distracted from her testimony.

Yeah Diana would say something so horrific and emotional and all the interviewer could do was immediately interject with some cold question of fact.

The interviewer is very skilled at what she does. Far from interposing herself, she guides Diana Golden most effectively through a long and gripping interview which results in a historical document of great importance. She asks the right questions at the right time. Both interviewer and interviewee comport themselves in an appropriate manner, with both parties adopting the right tone throughout to achieve the intended result. This is one of the clearest and most compelling narratives conducted by the USC Shoah Foundation.
Literally my thoughts. Let the lady speak! Always interrupting with asking the person's name or when? or how long? I was just so captivated by Diana and her story and I kept holding my breath because I knew the interviewer would interrupt any moment and disturb the fluidity of how Diana was telling her story.
This was a historical testimony you clowns. The interviewer did a wonderful job. This lady did a beautiful eloquent job with her testimony.

Can’t you have your interviewers show some empathy for these survivors? None of them show any kind of sympathy especially when it becomes very emotional.
@@ilenekaplan109 Ilene, permit me to point out that this is an oral history taking place for the historical record. "Emotion" emanating from either party would only cloud the testimony. The neutral tone is one of the reasons that Diana is debriefed so effectively. I consider the "exchange" between Diana Golden (interviewee) and Hilary Helstein (interviewer) to be exemplary, one that might be shown to trainee interviewers and held out as a benchmark to aim for in conducting such interviews which are archived as a matter of historical record.
Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful testimony, Mrs, Golden. I am so sorry for the terrible crimes committed by the Nazis against your sweet family.
What a horror this extraordinary woman has survived. And what dignity and strength she has. This is another impelling recollection of an unimaginable time. I found some 'personal and intimate' details I have always wondered about explained for the first time. She did not shrink from describing them - and that took another level of courage. Thank you Diana. And your beauty and your smile says much about your inner state despite the cruelty you had to endure... and you still maintained hope.

So lovely to hear someone speaking with so much respect to the survivor. Oh my, we cannot begin to imagine what these people have been through and, you’re right, they maintained their dignity somehow and ‘ got on with life’. Puts the problems of the woke moaners to shame does it not. How would they cope. They wouldn’t , because they do not have the inner spirit and beauty these people have, Man is an inhuman creature at times. Sad testimony for humanity . Mrs. Golden was a very engaging, beautiful lady and she taught me a lot about her homeland of Rhodes that I didn't know. It's amazing how different one survivor's story can be from another. I have to say I didn't like the interviewer's style. She was abrupt to the point of being rude in her way of asking Mrs Golden questions. She frequently interrupted, rushing her and asking her "what happened next." But Mrs. Golden was always gracious and eloquent. She went through a lot and she survived. I am grateful for her memories and willingness to be interviewed and share her experience and strength with the world.
This is by far the best explanation of what life was like back then. Amazing to see how long all these orthodox customs have survived! Amazing memory and how she organizes her thoughts. Love this!!!

Doug R actually when she was born in Rhodes and was living there it was part of Italy, she also spoke Italian and not Greek.
I kept expecting the bored interviewer to yell "SCNELL!" to make this sweet woman hurry up! SALUTE Diana!

God...that "tell me what happened." After she just said her father died...just seems so cold and hard..it made me tear up
There may be awkward pauses when the interviewer interrupts with a question but it is not out of rudeness, rather a responsibility to keep the guest on track and get as much information for historical record as they can.
Well said! I see a lot of negativity in the comments in regards to the interviewers but I believe they are trying to keep the interviewee on a steady timeline of events to make everything more structured and fluid!🙏🏻🇮🇱👍🏻

The more I listen to these stories the more I admire Jewish people and their culture. Through so much tragedy and being always stateless until Jewish state of Israel was established they still maintained a very strong sense of Jewish cultural and religious identity. Just amazing.
Lovely woman. She's very right, prisoners who didn't speak Polish Yiddish or German were at a major disadvantage. And the ones that had been there for years definitely resented those that came much later in the war.

The survivor’s’ stories have so much more impact when they are allowed to speak freely and narratively and the interviewer essentially fades into the background, only speaking to clarify something or bring an important point to light, based on what the survivor has said. So much emotion is lost when it is a Q&A session. Q&A’s also push the interview to three and five hours, and not many people have that much time at once to listen, not to mention ‘listener fatigue’ setting in. I fast-forwarded a lot trying to find the most pertinent parts.
You have completely missed the point. This is a personal testimony, a historical record.

This is a serious subject matter, one that the USC Shoah Foundation documents as a matter of historical record. I am calling a halt to our personal exchanges. I shall not respond to you again. Watch out for my next posting, directed at no one in particular, but meant to inform people out there who don't understand the nature and MO of Foundation's interviews in general and Diana Golden's in particular. Both interviewer and interviewee conducted themselves in an appropriate manner at all times. The interviewer is very skilled at debriefing the interviewee. The interviewee was cooperative and forthcoming, with a narrative that was clear and delivered in impeccable English (her 4th language after Ladino, Italian and French). This wasn't meant to be a fireside chat over coffee.

I have watched many of these testimonies. I often am puzzled by the questions asked and often there are negative comments regarding the interviewers. I try to give them the benefit of the doubt.
Probably they were trained to conduct interviews a certain way and ask certain questions. Videotaping was not so widespread and easy in the mid 90's as it is now.
Possibly they wanted to prevent long rambling stories. But often that is what we listeners now want to hear. I am thankful these important testimonies were taken and preserved.

Countless people like her retained or even honed their humanity, despite being subjected to the cruelty of brutes. The world continues the battle between our basest instincts and our noblest inclinations. Apathy is a vote for evil to prevail! We must never forget.

Where do they find these Interviewers? A beautiful, intelligent and extremely articulate lady being constantly interrupted with largely irrelevant questions that seem to be an attempt to keep Ms Golden "on track" but have the very opposite affect. Not to mention her utter lack of humanity/empathy, why oh why?

Almost every interview I’ve seen these “interviewers” are so cold almost rude in their tone.

I do not know if it's because they are American. Many know only English, anyway they do not strive to be understood or heard properly, no symphaty for the old person. It is pittiful for us foreigners ( from Argentina) to hear them.

Agree. I wish the interviewer would just be quiet and let the lady speak and tell her story. Even if the interviewers are volunteering, as someone said in a comment, common courtesy dictates to let people speak and be respectful
All of these survivors are so elegant and intelligent. The world lost so much with the Holocaust and now that the survivors are passing away. Thank G-d for these testimonies.
Is the interviewer listening to what this woman is saying? She’s interrupting her to asks questions that she is in the process of answering or has already answered. The interviewer seems as though this is a job she’s trying to get through and doesn’t understand the significance of this woman’s words.

Ms. Goldman's story was wonderful and she is good hearted person but the interviewer lady was very dumb, not allowing Ms. Goldman to explain her story properly simply puts next questions quickly.

I agree entirely with you Maddie Ferraro; her tone at points verges on impatience and frustration.
One can achieve the objectives of achieving historical record, whilst maintaining a sense of humility and appropriate compassion - or at least - appreciation.
I noticed the impatience also. It wasn't too bad but seemed rude, at times.
I can't stand when these interviews keep interuppting beautiful stories.
Fantastic. however the interviewer should have done her homework on Ladino and the Sephardic communities of the Mediterranean.. Ladino is a Jewish language not just Yiddish for God sake---also the school is the Alliance Israelite Universelle which was very active in North Africa, Greece, Turkey, etc. The communities of Greece especially Salonica were beacon of Ladino and Sephardic culture. I am happy however that Diana Golden was able to testify. Out of almost 2,000 people deported only 151 survived the Shoah---

Another Survivor Testified that the morning coffee contained something to STOP women from having their period..... Maybe that’s why hers stopped totally. God Bless all of these SURVIVORS 🙏🕊✨💖

She said a punishment was to give castor oil and they were "send out". What does that mean? The interviewed didn't ask what it was and instead ask the names of the people it happened to.
Hi, I know that your comment was made 1 year ago but I saw this great testimony only today. I am Italian from Bologna (the actual city that was also mentioned by this incredible lady). I know what Mrs, Golden was referring to about the Castor Oil see that I grew up listening to our father and mother talking about the war. The Camicie Nere (Black Shirts / Fascists) used to force people that they considered against the regime to drink extremely large amounts of Castor Oil and then let them go - the consequences I can leave them to your imagination. I would like to add that this Testimony really touched my heart so deeply - a truly amazing woman

faith Davis If you read at the top of the page there is a description of how these interviews will be indexed etc. Remembering and identifying people lost in the Shoah and documenting it for history is an important factor. There are testimonies not just personal remininscences.
The "interviewees: are the people responding to the questions asked of them. American 'education', aint it grand?
@@christopherbattle5161 Amen to that, Mr Battle. We had exchange students from William & Mary College in the US at my law school in the UK. They were ill-equipped in the kind of knowledge (history, geography, etc) to prepare them for what is needed at Law School. However, they were outgoing and personable, and one of them taught me how to throw a frisbee.

Lovely story , amazing lady ❤. I’m a little torn hearing about the zionism…. Specially in 2024 . But her story makes me look at it with a more open mind.
The sick part is this is still going on at this very moment in China & many other places😓 I’m pretty sure I’ve recently watched almost every single one of these testimonies😞 I was born in 1980 & during school I wasn’t particularly interested in learning about the past & now as a mother/ grown adult I find myself wanting to know it all. These people have been through so much. I truly hope they have found happiness in their lives! Sadly, now in America they now pushing critical race theory so now if they’re here their grandchildren will be taught that they have to feel guilty because they have white skin. Most Americans POC don’t understand that in America you have people who came here from all over the world that went through some of the same things they’ve went through & never owned slaves. I feel in America people have it too good, to the point that they’re looking for reasons to be angry with others, all races these days here have some reason to be upset. My ancestors migrated from France. My mother didn’t know English until she started school but they were made to feel ashamed that they spoke French so they assimilated to the point that they stopped teaching French to the children. I’m 40, my mom didn’t teach any of us French & it makes me so incredibly sad that she chose not to teach us.
Diana Golden, a beautiful, dignified, courageous lady and then the interviewer, cold, rude and discourteous. Not deserving of breathing the same air as Diana.

That was a good question asked”What did you do to maintain your dignity” I would have asked ....”Was their anything that you did that would comfort yourself”? The interviewer is a bit cold.. but she’s trying to keep the interview on track and I think not feel about the horrible things she’s hearing but she has an abrupt manner and her tone is harsh ....It detracts a bit from the interview....

I hope this lady did not mean Magda as in Magda Hellinger… I just read her book, “The Nazi’s Knew My Name” and so many people have said things about her but she was trying to save them overall from the SS. She was so misunderstood as a block elder! I hope Dianna did not mean her
