Hugh actually performed in school plays at a very young age. While his mother left him, his father was always there for him so he wasn't totally abandoned. He & his mom rebuilt their relationship over the years.
I don't want to get too deep into the Oedipus Complex, partially because I think that theory might have included some level of projection on Sigmund Freud's part, but I wonder how much of Hugh and Deborah's connection is based on Hugh's lack of a maternal figure in his early life. It's clear that they love each other deeply but maybe part of it is due to Deborah being a maternal figure in addition to a romantic partner.
I don't wanna be rude, but his "mother" didn't came back just bcoz she wanted to, she came back just for all the fame and stardom, she came back after he became famous. If Hugh wasn't a star today, he would have still been estranged from his "mother". Sad but true.
That postnatal depression is just an excuse for her. And Hugh is too innocent to see through that.
