Al watched you rework those feeders. Like the new idea of the metal grate. An even better solution I think would have been to also make the feeder narrower at the bottom so the hay would all be accessible to the goats. As it is now the feeder will fill will hay that they can't reach. Most mangers I've seen have this angle to them. Just a thought. Enjoying your videos and look forward to seeing them every time. Keep up the good job.

My grandfather used to cook (boil) a lot of the garden fodder that his pigs were reluctant to eat raw (celery, potatoes, onion skin trimmings, beet greens, etc,) along with other tasty things plus a bit of feed, and once cool enough, serve it in their trough as a mash. They loved having a tasty warm stew!

I've noticed it in a couple videos now, your mixer needs some attention/maintenance. A little deconstruction and some food grade grease will quiet it down, protect it from overheating damage and extend the life of it's gears. It would make a great rainy day indoor project, and you could film it and teach everyone.

I hope this design works but here is another possibility. We use a similar design for our horses, except the grate is put on top of the hay. Then it simply lowers as the hay is eaten. In your case, the goats could still put their heads fully in the feeder but would have to work to get the hay through the grate. An idea worth considering if there is too much hay left at the back of the feeders that the goats can't reach.

We purchased a metal one for power goats with this exact same design. Does a great job keeping them from just pulling it out randomly and it has her bottom that holds their extra goodies and extra hay. I love do-it-yourself stuff but no need to reinvent the wheel.

I’m so jealous of your weather. Where I live in North Scottsdale, we haven’t had any rain since May. The wild animals have eaten all of my plants down to nothing. Last year we had so much rain, and we actually got almost a foot of snow in the winter. This summer has been mostly watching wildfires from my porch.

Al I would think about putting the wire in on a angle from front to bottom back then they can get there head in but the trough will catch most of what they pull out. I built my sheep feeders out of plywood on the ends and trough with 2/6 side rails and wire mesh angled to the middle of the trough to catch what they dropped, with a hinged roof on it because you get so much more rain I think you would be able to save a lot of hay.

I don't know if your feed store carries it, but if they do, get a bag of dehydrated sugar best pulp. It is left from the sugar extraction process and can be added to feed and grain to increase pallet ability and caloric content.

Hey Al, great idea for the goat feeder, it will be interesting to see if they will be able to get to the last of the hay as it empties. If they can't you could put a board as a false bottom all the way across at a 45 to the back wall, maybe sand it a little smoother than rough sawn, that way the hay will always slide down to the front of the cage where they can reach it and hopefully eat it till it's all gone.

Use mesh and not wire so that there is some give when the goats push on it. Or you can use slow feeder nets and stuff the hay in them, place these in the feeder and that would work well too. Slow feeders are great as they slow down the consumption (keeps goats busy longer) and very little waste.

Very productive day. With the shop work never has to stop. Nice rain, we hope for some soon --- I think it rained once in July. Very dry and cracked land. Your stew looks great and I know what you mean about buying beef from a reliable source. We are able to buy longhorn beef at our farmers market in addition to pork products, eggs, and chicken. It means a lot to looking the eyes of the hardworking folks who produce the protein we eat. A bit more than the store, but that's ok ----no sweatshop protein for us. Joy Giles

I think the reason that they did not waste in the old feeder was because they left their heads in it the whole time they were eating. I think the new feeders were not deep enough for them to put their whole head in and still see out the other side. Like it is too close to the wall. I hope the wire helps.

I think the wiring on the feeders should work well and the goats don't seem to mind it either, so that is a good thing. Yes, fall/winter is a great time for all those comfort foods and beef stew is one of my favorites. Love having those nice warm comfort foods to warm the soul!. Looking forward to more work being done on the woodshed. We are cool here too, but not quite as cool as you guys. We are low 60's in the mornings and today is cloudy from hurricane Dorian. Hope, you want the “goat pro” or the drill? Lolz, they’re so cute, smart idea using the grate in those feeders, every penny saved counts✌🏼🤟🏼🤞🏼

If you put an angled back plate in the feeders, the hay will slide forward as they eat it. Some galvanized flashing would work.

I hope the wire on the feeders works out for you. The beef stew looks delicious. I though prefer sinigang (Filipino sour soup) when the weather is cool or cold. Then again I will eat it anytime of the year since it's my most favorite food. I even ate it in the Philippines although it was hotter there. I hope to make some for my 40th birthday later this month. We usually eat it with rice, other grains or pseudo ones, or as is. Our preferred souring agent is tamarind. It's the only way I can get my 11 year-old son to eat most green vegetables.

We have had a dry winter too. We are in stage 4 drought in many parts of New South Wales and Queensland Australia. We are now in our first week of spring in the Southern Hemisphere and today it was 84.2 F where I am (Queensland). There is an abundance of dry leaf litter and the trees are mostly eucalypts (we call them fuel on a stick) the mountains to my west are burning out of control, houses are gone and the fire is heading towards a National Park - this is going to be a bad summer for fires in Australia.

Another additional hack you can do to the feeders too is to add a slide board. What I mean is put a sheet from top to bottom in measurement. But the angle is what needs to be in place. So the top of the sheet would be at the back top part of the feeder, and the bottom would be in the middle of the bottom of the feeder. So when you put the hay into the feeder, it slides forward and leeps itself against the cage. Instead of hanging out in the back side untouched until you come and push it forward.
