Short and sweet! I don’t know about your practice area but the north practice area near Battleground Wa gets crazy. There are multiple flight schools that use the area so unless you go crack of dawn its busy. These clearing turns have saved my butt a few times just locating traffic. Another important tool is knowing where the landmarks are for your radio calls. Before we flew in for the first time my CFI had me open up google maps and identify the key points the area uses for reference. Knowing and then verifying where they were in the sky made me feel more aware and in tune with the practice area. It’s really nice hearing a call and actually knowing where they are haha. I like the checklist, may steal that one!
This is a topic that I've always been curious about. Because the way that the multiple CFIs that I've flown with do PPL maneuvers is different than what you've done and what I've seen other youtube CFIs teach. Frankly, what you're teaching makes more sense to me: 1) Have a pre-manuever checklist 2) clear the area before each maneuver 3) make a radio call indicating your intentions. None of my CFIs did #1 & #2. And only occasionally required #3. And the DPE that I used wasn't phased by my not doing any of those three things - I passed. We don't have a dedicated CTAF for the practice area that we often use. What I do is use the CTAF of the closest airport and announce there. I've always wondered if I should be announcing on 122.75 instead. What frequency do you announce on? Does your practice area have a dedicated CTAF?
Sounds like people take it more seriously based on the part Of the country you’re in and how congested your practice area is. Yes we do have a designated practice area with a designated frequency of 122.75. It’s actually listed on the sectional chart. So maybe that’s why we’re much more adamant about it out here. But regardless, the ACS lists clearing the area as it’s number 1 skill for every maneuver, so I don’t know why all CFIs and DPEs don’t take it more seriously. Especially with the number of midair’s we’ve had recently like the one in Colorado just last week… which happened in a practice area… involving an instructor with their student 🤷🏻♂️ thanks for watching as always and for the thoughtful commentary! 😊
@@NorthwestAeronaut the way my CFIs have explained the line in the ACS is that I've already cleared the area. I'm also paraphrasing what I understood. It's possible that I'm mistranslating.
Love it thanks !! Have my cheek tomorrow ! Just making sure everything is on point !!
How’d it go!?
I remember us going over this before my check ride. Thanks again for all the help!!
Yeah buddy! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

Yes it means you show that you are able and aware of diligently clearing the area before the maneuver is commenced :-)
