Afghanistan: Inside the world’s most repressive country for women - BBC Newsnight

  • The Taliban marked the second anniversary of its return to power yesterday with a public holiday.
But few Afghans, both women and men, have much to celebrate.
The Taliban, recently stopped most Afghan female staff from working with aid agencies, closed beauty salons, barred women from parks and curtailed their travel in the absence of any male guardian. In March, the UN said that “Afghanistan under the Taliban remains the most repressive country in the world regarding women’s rights.”
The fall of Kabul on 15 August 2021 followed the US decision to pull troops out of the country by September that year.
Newsnight correspondent Yasminara Khan and producer Ali Hamedani explore the situation in the country today.

So women are not allowed to go to universities, and women are only allowed to see female doctors. So, where do the female doctors receive their medical training from, or haven't they thought of that?

The talibans laws do not only adversly affect medical services to women in the present by only alowing female patients to be seen by female doctors but even more alarming is that these taliban laws also ban girl education past the age of 11, ensuring no Afghani women can become doctors in the first place. These laws are dangerous, ill informed, punitive and cynical. How can we stand by and look while half the population of an entire country is targeted like this?

You don't understand that to change the Afghan culture America would have to stay there for 100 years or more, they'd have to force feminism on them at an early age for at least a 2-3 generations and introduce Atheism as an alternative to Islam. If not then give all the women who don't want to be Muslims access to live somewhere in the west. These wars were completely pointless. "Controlling Spouse".......most controlling spouses are actually female. In most families in the West it is usually the male that spends most time away from the home to provide the necessary income. Welcome to my Ted Talk:
I'm salty about the whole situation. I was in Kandahar a decade ago, and i saw the "real" Afghanistan (i.e. the 80% rural majority). These people couldnt care less about who is in power. The level of poverty, depravity, and ignorance is not what you see in these reports and videos. This is the urban side reporting out, and yes... urban life is 180 since the Taliban. But the rural majority are barely living to begin with. And without a cohesive majority, Afghanistan will remain open tp whichever strongarm minority exists at the time.
The best way to cut to the core problem is looking at Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs.
Afghanistan is on the lowest rung. The majority of the population is illiterate, uneducated, diseased, and starving to death. And from this, the west (through COIN doctrine) thought we could assemble and train an army to be self sufficent and fight for itself. Well, that idea... of freedom and liberty, etc are ALL on higher rungs of Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs.
Your basic Afghan does not have the mental or physical bandwidth to entertain such constructs. They are literally grifting everyday to feed themselves and whatever families they have.
The Taliban have inherited the same problem, albeit they are much closer aligned via language, religion, and general customs. And they are still very draconian in their disciplinary actions (which, again... to the "livestock" and agricultural mentality of rural Aghans... is perhaps a more effective approach).
Instead of having to explain complex legal systems and moral philosophy that was discussed, debated, and matured in the West (and eventually arose to English Common Law - which the US system adopted), why not just cut off the hand of a thief so that the whole village sees the tangible conclusion for such crimes.
It's a hard and sad truth that the urban Afghans saw progress, but as a whole, the majority of the country is ungovernable via western systems. You'd need generations of education and capital to prevent Afghanistan from being a failed state.
All those ANA paper/ghost soldiers (for the ones that actually existed) are first generation. You would need at least 3 or 4 generations of successful career service, progress, and social work to make a difference in that country (i.e. to educate and sustain them enough to where they can move up Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs and actually begin to contemplate moral philosophy (beyond Sharia) and give them a sense of purpose beyond grifting for food and water.
In order for Afghanistan to have been a success story, we would've had to stay there for 100 years, and have generational support. All we achieved (in Kabul primarly) was that we gave girls a glimpse of education. So we have a cohort of 20-35yo urban women (maybe less than 10% of the entire population) who know what progress looks like... that's it.
In order for Afghanistan and COIN to have worked... those girls would've had to hold careers, have families of their own, have their children go to school, repeat, and then their children's children go to school and repeat. But were talking 50+ years of investment to get that generational progress. And even then, thats just urban progression.
On top of that, what was the plan to educate and social work among the rural majority? Because that's who you have to bring up in terms of Maslows Heirarchy. The rural population is where a successful, standing ANA would have had to draw support from. But in 20 years, there's nothing to show for out in the rural areas. To reach the provinces and collectively unite them... would've needed 100 years, across multiple generations.
Without this commitment, Afghanistan will contine to be a forgone conclusion. Your average Afghan (rural) is practically identical to an indigenous tribe on an unexplored island somewhere. Trying to get them to stand and fight (when they themselves thought the US military were Russians because they didnt even know the the Russian war had ended)... i mean... the writing is on the wall.
The Pentagon dropped the ball with COIN and sold their soul to the idea. When all they needed was a Sociology and Psychology 101 professor explain to them that Afghanistan was not a viable candidate for such doctrine.
You'd have to solve multiple levels of Maslow's Heirarchy (which would take generations) to even begin to have a conversation with your average Afghan about "self-determination."
