Thanks for the great video! Really like the idea of “Elbow your brother, phone your mother”. I will need to focus a little more on my open turns!

Cam, I very much appreciate the support. You have to be careful, however: that advice does not work quite as well outside the swimming pool.

Elite method #2! Point your toes as your feet are coming into the wall! You were an age group legend and still a legend.

    Great Vid :).
For more experienced swimmers; keeping one tight line as you enter and exit the wall is super important. Some swimmers tend to push off at an angle to make room for a swimmer behind them after countless yards of circle swimming. This will make your breakout slower, and will make your push-off less powerful. A great way to help with this is to imagine there are two kick boards shoulder width apart on the wall. As you enter and exit, try not to get any of your body parts outside of these barriers and then push off.

That’s a great point. I hadn’t even considered the effects of circle swimming but you are right that that does tend to translate to bad habits in races as well.

This is one of the best open water turn instructional videos I have ever come across for youngsters. You really nailed 90% of all mistake made.
I have not swam competitively in over 20 years, but I can still remember my college coach yelling, “Elbow your brother. Phone your mother!” I have used this saying for years when coaching the little kids and sometimes I wonder if they think I’m crazy. Glad to see I have the great Derek Maas backing me up!

Dear Mr Maas, this helped me with my Open turns today at practice. Miranda had me watch this to fix my turn. I found it thoroughly helpful and entertaining.
    Sincerely,
    Hope Xayaveth

That slow motion butterfly turn clip for head position is excellent. Very clear what should be happening.

The first video I have seen that by describing the mistakes in the open turn, by example shows how to make the perfect open turn. Thanks for that.

Hey Derek I need help with my underwater pullout. What’s the best way to increase my pullout power? Should I just do lat pull-downs everyday?

A great drill to work on driving your legs up is plyometric skips but with extending your alternate arm on each up. As with all plyometric skips, work on floating up and out. This very closely mimics the hip flexor push/ab pull used in driving your legs into the wall.

Your hips are really guiding your rotation. And you can tell that because from your hands, shoulders and hips, it is one solid "plank". As your feet hit the wall, you can now use your hips to turn over.
Rotating off the wall with your shoulders OR rotating completely at the wall with your shoulder breaks this plank and stops the most efficient energy transfer (a straight line) from your feet to your upper body.

Very nice. My friend aldorphanage asked if you could compare the dynamics of open turns on regular walls/pads and high rise omega pads 😮 he trains in baskertarskwannie and they use high rise walls without gutters. He has 12 kids

    • @DerekMaas
      @DerekMaas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This is a great question. I will have to touch on it in a future video. I have heard about the legendary baskertarskwannie pool! I will have to visit there at some time and speak with Mr. Aldorphanage myself.
