As a reds fan, I remember watching that play live. Never once did it cross my mind that he wasnt kicking the ball out of anger. The guy was a hothead and was very hard on himself especially. Heads up play? hardly...lucky fluke, definitely
Paul is a friend of my family. When I asked him about it he said that it was more a play of desperation. He couldn't make a clean play on it so in a millisecond with the ball at his feet he tried something and it just happened to work. Call it heads up, call it luck, call it desperate, call it what you like, but in the moment it wasn't out of anger. Paul has a history of being extremely self disciplined and hard on himself when he made mistakes which at times led to him having a temper. But that wasn't what happened in the moment that he made that play. In actuality, he hates that that play gets featured so often as a "heads up" play because he says it was the opposite; a desperate attempt to save a play that just happened to work out. So if you ever meet him, don't mention this play because he hates talking about it.

That play is something that occasionally gets brought up on-air, and thinking back he is usually rather quick to carry on from the subject. It seems to be one of Michael Kay's favorite Paul O'Neill stories though, next to that time he pitched for the Reds in a blowout and tweaked his arm throwing as hard as he could. Very cool to have some first-hand knowledge here though, so thank you!

It’s a fairly common play actually. A variation that’s a fumbleroosky is the ball is snapped and set down, while the o line stands up and the QB starts walking over to the sideline to talk to the coach. It’s interesting to see it working in the NFL though.

I suppose they ruled it wasn't high or "easy" enough a fly ball to call the infield fly. The ump should have though. That ball was catchable with "minimal effort".
Actually during this time, those rules were not yet created. Then later on they created the rules to protect the players and make the game longer
