I think Betty Grable's outfit is the one I would want the most, I love the belt and the fact that it's convertible, and the shorts have buttons in the back, what a stunner.
Vintage style > vintage values is one of my favourite mottoes. I fell in love with vintage style back in 2019 and only now started to put it into my everyday life with dressing vintage. It’s soooo amazing!
When women stars were turning giggly and wiggly like Monroe and Mansfield, or fey fauns like A. Hepburn, Bacall maintained the intelligent, angular, raspy asperity of the great prewar divas such as Swanson and Davis. Betty Bacall had been a model, but she projected more dramatic force and self-possession than most clothes horses. She added a refreshing dash of angostura bitters to the sweet, sticky cocktail of Fifties femininity in Hollywood.
Marilyn was under rated for her talent though her figure did get the credit it deserved. She really was a brilliant comedienne. In this part she played a girl who could barely see without her glasses. That is why she stumbles trying to step up on the platform. It takes artistry to make that look accidental, keep your balance, and make a klutzy move so cute and endearing. I'm no fan of the gimmick accessories, but the garments themselves were lovely. The gimmicks were no worse than they are nowadays. And notice these women were all curves. Their makeup was designed to flatter. Not an anorexic in the pack, no bizarre cosmetics or tortured hair. These clothes were feminine and celebrated the female shape.
@@jochenstossberg5427 so? What's your point? Have you never seen any photos of her that were personal? Not on a set or movie shoot? She was just as pretty in a natural setting.
All the women casted had curve, because they're models thats what job required then. but thank god weve started to see that theres more than sample size. they are beautiful tho ❤ style was great, everything else could die edit: spelling
@@jeancarlos_qp we aren't seeing women like this on the runway etc. Plus size, obese models, which is what they are showing now, are not what these women were. These women were truly hourglass shaped, with small waists, flat stomachs, shapely arms and legs that were toned.
Well, then, as now, money talks. Tom Brookman was worth (if my memory of a later scene is correct) $200M. I'm sure Mr. Antoine would not be throwing an impromptu fashion show for just any schnook without a necktie on!
Marilyn had the best build and legs ever. And a gorgeous face. Sge was also way more talented than she ever got credit for and took her craft very seriously.
This is so true! She actually said it in, I believe, 'Gentlemen prefer blondes' - if a girl is pretty, everyone thinks she's stupid. She was extremely talented because she made the audience truly believe she was that stereotypical silly blonde bombshell, which simply means that she was a good actress. The collection of books and magazines she had in her house just instantly proves that she was highly intelligent, motivated, and absolutely witty.
This movie was expressionism in motion. What's special about this movie is it's when the Golden Era of film was coming to a close. This was one of the last films with sets designed for every scene before they began shooting on location. This level of acting and expression was designed to be captured frame by frame to look like a painting 🤩
Kitt E. Cat - every film has sets designed before the cameras go in. And the casts of almost all of these old films almost never went on location. It was all done on soundstages with footage projected in after shooting. It looks like a painting for one reason - every scene had to be 'designed' and worked out before it was shot, simply because the new extra wide screen had to be 'filled,' and the photographers had to learn how to fill it. That's why these films look so 'stagey' with everyone spaced out artificially across the screen. It was new technology, and many directors, before they figured out how to take advantage of the width - hated it. Vincente Minnelli was one of the first to really make it work. Watch any of his early 'scope films and you'll see how clever he was. He was first and foremost a window set designer, so he knew how to do it.
A lot of movies at this time had a fashion parade thrown in to fill in the time - and the new extra wide screen, while the men with the money smirked from the sidelines. Nobody in real life wore clothes like this. Pity the print is faded. The new Cinemascope format in it's early days had issues. If you put an actor in the center of the screen in a close up, they immediately 'put on weight' so the cinematographers had to come up with ways to fill the width without close ups. It's great to see these old films though - just to remember how we all were as audiences. Innocent!
I might do this for my clients, friends and co-designers to show off the latest collection before anyone else or the public can see it. Sorta like a run through or a preview.
Does anyone knows who's the beauty wearing the Mexican outfit at 3:20 ? I know she could be my grandmother right now but damn! She's the ultimate crush!
They were smart to film this in wide-screen! Great use of wide shots to allow the audience to really admire the beautiful women and their dresses. We need movies like this today, full of colour, beautiful clothes and witty humour. Perfect distractions for a few hours from news of wars, hate and corrupt politicians.
@@Hunny1au Honestly? I heard this twice, in 1987/88 I was 14 a15 I believe it's more than likely unfortunately, all it would take is one backyard procedure, or even a rich one, to fuck up her ovaries and beyond. Her life was harrowing growing up, she made something of herself, but the reality was that yes. I am not sure if she wanted children or not, but, she had to abort many. She could have had children, but didn't. Despite having endometriosis, she was pregnant many times and could have gone full term if she wanted to.
Fashion parades were very popular in 30s, 40s, 50s films, often as musical numbers. In black and white films they were often a stand alone section in Technicolor. Of course, the economics of a vast stage with curtains and endless gorgeous models showing gowns for a single customer who doesn’t buy any of them, is ridiculous. Which is why we love these movies. This was the first film from 20th Century Fox in widescreen so in several scenes the leads lie elongated on chaises just to exploit the format.
