I also haven't played with Ultimate Doom Builder in awhile... My impression has always been that, Ultimate Doom might be easier to do basic building with, but Slade is a better packing tool for manipulating the WAD. Not that I see all this new stuff coming out, I wish I would have paid more attention to the real development features that it has to offer, since I am a programmer.
Slade really is pretty much only for scripting/wad creation/editing. But it is actually slowly expanding it's feature set and who knows might one day rival ultimate doom builder. That isn't today sadly though. GZDoom is a very impressive engine for making "Boomer" shooters as people call them.
Nah, I think Slade3 is as easy as UDB in the map editing department, while at the same time allowing you to add new textures, more maps (you CAN do multimap WADs in UDB, but it's a confusing process) and it has better support for advanced stuff, like scripting. Basically think of UDB as Notepad, while Slade3 is the entire office suite.

Hey man, I'm trying to create/edit a Doom map in UDB, but when I add the doom.wad and click OK, the editor opens but a bunch of errors appear. Could this be because the game settings only have options for Doom2? When I open Doom2.wad in UDB, no errors appear. Furthermore, in Doom Builder X I can open any of the Doom and Doom2 WADs without errors, there is the game configuration option for both Doom and Doom2.

Hey, may be a bit of a long shot but, i try to follow this tutorial but when i get to the actual "create a new map" part in ultimate doom builder, it says "a resource archive is required for this game configuration but not present "gzdoom.pk3" without it UDB will have severely limited capabilities" which includes a bunch of enemies and creates 29 errors. Whenever i try to look for other people having the same issue, all people talk about is them having the file but it not being detected by GZdoom. i am not sure where this file comes from, please help
Yeah when you pick GZDOOM(UDMF) format. You need to click add resource -> Navigate to the GZDoom directory and add gzdoom.pk3 as a resource. Then the issue will go away
when launching slade for the first time it says to add some base resources archives and to specify a zd pk3 folder, what do I do? Btw very helpfull video!
I use doom builder with DOOM2.wad as a ressource, but it also ask me for gzdoom.pk3 as a ressource... is it normal ? I see nobody adding it in the tutorials, is it required or do i have a problem with my install of doom builder ?
Sorry for the delay in the response! You only need gzdoom.pk3 if you are using GZDoom and even then you "technically" don't need it. But it is apart of GZDoom look in wherever you put GZDoom and just add the pk3.

Hello! i hope everything is fine and I'm sorry to ask something that maybe simple for many. I'm a beginner at map building and Ultimate Doom builder, and I've encountered a problem that I don't see people mentioning. When I started using the program a couple days ago, there was a highlight everytime i was on 3D mode, making me able to see what i selected or am selecting. Now for some reason that blinking highlight, the orange-yellow-ish highlight, it just doesn't appear. Is there any way for me to fix that? It gets confusing to work without it.
Sure ask away.. Hit H when in 3D mode to return the highlight. Feel free to also join the Discord. Lot's of others on there as well doing GZDoom mapping.
I've been planning on making a retro FPS using another engine I got, mainly just to get a concept going, but it's an easier program to use. That said, If I do get somewhere with it, I would like to potentially remake it using GZDoom. I've always loved more classic shooters anyway.
Here's how I would describe it... You're creating a map that depends on the wad, and the engine depends on the WAD for control. So, it runs the game from the WAD while telling it to open your map. You're constrained by the game WAD you're piggy back off of, until you learn how to make your own, with your own scripting and assets.

Did I say Slade3 is better than UDB? I can't remember it's been awhile. Hmm well to answer your question. You need Slade because it's the best wad/pk3 creator/editor. So if you want to do custom content or pack all of your maps into a single wad/pk3 then Slades your friend. For actual mapping I find UDB to be better. So keep Slade handy as later tutorials once I start getting into creating content from scratch. You will need it.
@raven67854 so slade isn't a map maker? It's just the finalization after your done with your map, you use it to put it all together to make it playable?
Sorry for delay but I never saw that you messaged about this. This tutorial only covers Ultimate Doom Builder. But I could do a smaller Slade 3 only series.
Yes you can create your own game with this. Provided you do all of your own art, code(ACS Scripting) and so on. Games like Selaco use this engine / toolset.
Keeping Doom level editing alive is a venerable pursuit.

I’ve been using Slade & UDBuilder in tandem-the “Reload Assets” function lets you see any alterations made in Slade instantly. That’s the way to go.

In the newer version your are advised to not add doom.wad AND doom2.wad in resources. Also you're advised to add gzdoom.pk3 for full effects.

The issue I have on Win 11 is Slade's start page is trying to use corewebview2 that fails, so it flashs. If I just close that It seems fine.

You want to grab the FreeDOM Wad files.. Or if you own doom add those instead. Whichever :)

Do you need the freedoom files if you already own doom 2? I have the steam version for only doom 2.
Nope you can use the Doom 2 files! I just use FreeDoom because it's well free and that way anyone can use it legally without having Doom 1 or Doom 2.

When i click on UDB it won't open i think i need to convert it from 7z but that won't work either
Download 7zip from www.7-zip.org/ and then use it to open the 7z archive.
I have the app it just won't display it in my folder when i extract it
I don't really know what that means. You just drag it to the folder of your choosing then run builder.exe.

It should load the entire WAD file as that holds all of your assets.

UDB Files? You mean the zip? You extract the file into a folder of your choosing then run builder.exe

So when i download the 64bit binaries for slade all i got was "slade_3.2.2_x64" is there a next step or did i do it wrong?
Slade is compressed as a 7zip archive. You will need this to open it
