Brilliant. Thank you mcac. Never have I heard anyone put so concisely the systematics of the art world and the necessary requirements to stand in that world. KJM. Incredible.
This man's knowledge of his craft, his talent, and his wise words... absolutely amazed me! He makes me very proud to be a black artist in America. 🌚🎨🖌🇺🇸💯% ‼
He also said 'Mastry'; and this man needs to be Listened to, and Heard by anyone who considers herself or himself a serious artist working in the world today and anyone headed in that direction. I went to art school too, and had some fine instructors, and I was about to say I wish I'd had a Kerry James Marshall as a teacher, but we're the same age, so that wouldnt've worked out on this particular plane; that's OK because we both gotta get back to work. The truth is just so damn pretty when it's being applied with honesty and wisdom. It may hurt, but sometimes it needs to.
Quite wonderful to listen to. I'm glad there is a lot of content of his interviews and lectures available online. His style reminds me of Alex Katz and Henri Matisse, among many others. I really like the first two works of his new blackbird series.
Mr.Marshall deserves a Master Class video. This offering is way too short for such a master. He lays it down not only for himself but for future and aspiring artists. My only critique is in the production of the video. When showing the individual works, the names of the works would have been helpful to those not that familiar with Mr.Marshall's work instead of waiting to the end and display it in the credits. Most museum videos do this.Otherwise I appreciate the offering.
Holy shit. This guy's really, really good. Must do more research. Some amazing paintings in there. And he can talk about art and painting, unlike some conceptual artists (Koons, Hirst, McCarthy). Really interesting.
Can you be my teacher😂? I just love how you break down the concept of your art , it’s enlightening. I definitely feel like we need more black art to be portrayed in the media and for it to be normalized and it one of my goals!
Making some really strong points at the end. Symbolism is a powerful thing if you use it right. There’s an artist named Serge Gay Jr. who’s art seems almost directly inspired by this man. Recommend anyone who likes this also check him out.
yes exactly!! people paint themselves.. white artists are prone to paint themselves or what represents them..that is what each person is to do..represent yourself through art
Why "Mastry" instead of "Mastery"? What are we supposed to make of this misspelling or intentional butchering of the word mastery? Mr. Marshall is articulate and smart. His paintings are full of meaning and he is a very accomplished painter. Is the title trying to take away from that? I seriously don't get it.
I wish he taught an art history class. Mr. Marshall brings so much life and questions to be asked within his work.
He taught studio art classes, which means you are being taught art history if you're in his art class.
This guy is smart and focused....and a really great painter.
This man is a genius. I truly hope that his art brings forth more question of black image and image to stand forth in this next century.
I'm ready to get into the GAME!!! Thanks Mr. Marshall!!!!

Wonderful Art, and his remarks are a sincere and reflexive explanation.
Great Art, Mr Marshall!

i appreciate you Mr. Marshall...
Yes indeed! Nice info!
I'm so glad he exist 🙏🙏🙏
That was spot on and to the point what Kerry said about mastery...every artist starting out should heed his words.

Its so great to think the Kerry James Marshall is alive right now.
Sincerely,
The It Factor
Extremely informative and educational.
I love him and his work so much

Right! And Ben Shahn.
I am so inspired.
Truly amazing talk! Thank you!
phenomenal elaboration by an incredible artist
i love the way he describes the variety of black peoples skin tones and hair colors.

This is a FENDI fact!
How amazing is this guy? Just wow.
...let's do it! ...a very intelligent man and great artist ....
This is all I need to learn how to do now; speak clearly and informative about my art.
smart man. thanks for the inspiration
What a beautiful well spoken man.
Can you be my teacher😂? I just love how you break down the concept of your art , it’s enlightening. I definitely feel like we need more black art to be portrayed in the media and for it to be normalized and it one of my goals!

Can anyone tell me , “raise that image to the same level that it performs at the same frequency”means?
DANG!!!!!!!! What a FEAST!
💚💚💚 My Hero 🎨🎨🎨
JAZZ MUSIC has a lot of black OLD MASTERS, that I greatly respect.
Wow this guy is amazing!!
NICE VID keep them coming
Mr. Marshall is SPITTING.
So helpful
Nice interview
SoloArt Studio : Congratulations Kerry!!! Your insights has manifested through your Art the respect and recognition around the world. Best Wishes!!!
Brilliant
In terms of intellect and skill, KJM runs circles around Basquiat and pretty much everyone else. Best artist in America.
Yeah!
A modern master
Genius
Does anyone know a Filipino artist who paints in a similar style? Example: The painting OUR TOWN
Manual Occampo ?
botong francisco
I could listen to him for hours. A lot of what he says resonates with me. Art history should be rewritten
yes exactly!! people paint themselves.. white artists are prone to paint themselves or what represents them..that is what each person is to do..represent yourself through art
what is mastry?....
luv you

U R the black master sir.
afropresentismo/futurismo vivo!!
His view on Art school “the system literally”
I'm here because of a buffalo rapper westside Gunn
When does he talk about Kerry? I'm a big fan of Westside Gunn
now i'm legitimately curious if he'd draw white people the same way but with white
Subject: A Little Person as President of America, in the Oval Office
I will just put it out there, better, way better than Basquiat.
Addendum to statement @ :16 - " There are no RECOGNIZED Black European 'masters'."
i always liked kerry's art. im a big fan of his! too bad he looks like a younger bill cosby
I have no idea what he is talking about. why do we need to learn art in college ugghhh....
Identity politics in art. Boring
it's got nothing to do with identity politics...he just centers the image around his own experiences and the experiences he wants to see represented.
Can anyone tell me , “raise that image to the same level that it performs at the same frequency”means?
it means you gotta paint as good as those guys who are deemed as masters, and then do it your own way
