    I am almost through Frame's "Doctrine of the Christian Life" for my Christian Ethics class at CTS. I have found his Tri-Perspectivalism idea really helpful in thinking through biblical ethics!

    Sounds like good old-fashioned OIA: observation, interpretation, application. What does it say? What does it mean? How does it apply? But taken to another level. Thanks Pastor Matt, always interesting stuff!

    Another analogy from music: the trinity can be understood as a triad. When played together as a chord, we hear it as one chord. At the same time, we can distinguish the root, third and fifth, three as one. (Music theory, anyone?). There have been many ways of thinking about the trinity presented throughout church history, but not many by musicians. And we hear this about every day if we listen analytically.

    When I read through his Systematic Theology it took me till like 2/3rds of the way through for me to finally sort of get Tri-Perspectivalism lol

    I'm going to have to listen to this more than once. Or more than twice. To say it's over my head at first listen is an understatement. Then again, completely understanding the Trinity is over pretty much _everyone's_ head. That's what I tell myself, anyway 😉

    This is fascinating! I've seen this sort of pattern but figured it was coincidence or I was just making it up in my head. Our God is extraordinary! How I long to meet Him face to face! I am also glad to know you knew John Frame. I have that ginormous A History of Western Philosophy and Theology. I've started to dive into it. But I was a bit hesitant at first because I did not know anything about the author. If he's recommended by you, then I know I can trust it. (Obviously not blindly or like it's Scripture. But you know what I mean.)
    Thanks for giving your YT audience some deeper teaching & information. I get weary of everything being "dumbed down" to the lowest common denominator. I'm sorry if that sounds arrogant. I'm not saying I'm so brilliant. Far from it. But I do think Christians need to exercise their minds, and this is very rarely an emphasis in churches or among Christians in general.

    A very interesting idea. I first heard this from my elder but it was in a different matter and not put into normative, situational, existential framework. Also, I saw that yo preached at RPTS. I’m currently part of the RPCNA.

    Buyer beware, Prof. Frame takes exception to vast swaths of the Westminster Standards and has written extensively against the historic Reformed understanding of Biblically regulated worship. He is very much a minority report on the Reformed faith and practice.

      I read his book on “contemporary” worship, and I have to say it was very unimpressive. Not a lot of Biblical foundations for his case.. lots of emotional appeals. A lot of people have great things to say about him and yet this is the only book from him that I read, and it made me quite uninterested in anything else he had to say.

      Taking exception to vast swaths of the Westminster Standards is a great endorsement in my book.

    I was reading frames Lordship series and came across his triperspectivalism. To be honest, at a high-level triperspectivalism is OK but as you keep applying it to deeper and deeper levels it just makes things more confusing because I almost felt like I have to keep track of everything. It also seemed to take my focus off the topic at hand and redirected it to where the topic fits within his categories, if that makes any sense. in the end, I felt it was more of a distraction for me and didn't feel it helped me understand anything better. Maybe for others it would be helpful though.

    This method is apprehended only by those "in Christ." When my worldview is submissive to the necessary analysis of His sole righteousness then I am "triggered linguistically" to think with Biblical rationalism.

    Catholic vs. Calvinist thought: which has the more intellectually rigorous tradition?

    • @classicchristianliterature
      @classicchristianliterature ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on who you put into each group and what topic you are specifically addressing. Calvin quoted the church fathers and “Catholic” scholars extensively as did the Puritans. Aquinas is probably the most brilliant scholar (esp. on theology proper) … but reformed scholastics took Aquinas and stripped away the Romish distinctives.

    • @KissellMissile
      @KissellMissile ปีที่แล้ว

      Calvanists are a small sliver of Christian thought, a detail they tend to miss by being very insular. Calvanist contributions to theology are a drop in the bucket compared to post-Reformation Catholics (FYI, I am neither).
