Man, that Sherwood brought back some memories. Before about 1986 that's what most all car audio amps looked like. Alpine, Concord, Sanyo, etc. They were all big, chunky lumps with massive heatsinks. No esthetic value whatsoever! Who would have thought in just a few short years we would have sexy red anodized amps and even a few that were gold plated. It was an amazing time.
Yep! I had a Sherwood XA-1240Q... just a big grey lump of heatsinks. Pretty meh sound quality at full range, but it made my 2 Cerwin-Vega 12's thump pretty good.
My uncle had multiple of these Sherwood amplifiers. He might still have a couple of them. They are what got me into car audio. My uncle doesn't actually know how much he has influenced my life. He is still a major part of my life, but he still doesn't know how much he means to me.
WOW...The Sherwood was my first amp back in 1988. That amp was a beast. Rated for 8 ohm and it ran 4 ohm its entire life trying to Run two MTX Terminator 12's. The giant heatsink would get smoking hot. Love this channel.
I had the "400W" version of the Rockwood Detonator back in the day. Roughly 1992-1993 timeframe. The light blue paint would flake off if you ran your fingernail across it, LOL. This video brought back some memories!!
Those Blaupunkt class T amps were known to wreak havoc with radio reception and certain vehicle systems. The electromagnetic interference they create is epic!!
Sherwood was a pretty solid mid-range brand back then in the mid 80s. I worked at a small stereo shop that was a Sherwood dealer and I still own my Sherwood home integrated amp from back then. The Sherwood car decks were also pretty decent for the money as well. I installed quite a few at the time.
DAM I LOVE THESE VIDEOS... I REMEMBER USING ALL OF THESE AMPS. WATCHING THIS VIDEO MADE MY DAM DAY !!! CAN'T STOP SMILING.. BRINGS BACK ALOT OF GOOD MEMORIES OF ME AND MY BUDDIES WORKING ON OUR STEREOS TIL 2 OR 3 IN THE MORNING, JUST TO SOUND LOUD WHEN WE WENT TO SCHOOL THE NEXT DAY.
I had the 4 channel version of that blaupunkt. Worked great. Took it out of that plastic shell, it was sorta like class D, was very cool and never got hot. Worked for years and never had any issues with it. 4x100w @ 4ohm
I had both the Rockwood in the video and a Detonator 300. The 300 was a lot better amp that was actually worth the money. Fortunately I didn't give much of anything for the big one.
🔵Blaupunkt was an early adopter of the Tripath chips, whose technology is now used in the majority of amplifiers. That amp was Blaupunkt's innovative push to take market share in the American car audio market. Smaller than any other competing amp with a similar power output at the time and half the price, its plastic body was unheard of in any other application, because amps all got so hot that it was impossible to use a plastic shell. 🥵 I'm genuinely stoked to see what that amp can do, and how hot it gets when running at a full load. Keep up the great work, Big D.
@@BblastedD It's been so long and I now suffer a brain injury, but I know I set the record in NM for 500w and under. Took a music teacher, a science teacher, and two months working with MTX and a bunch of testing, but if I remember, I hit over 150db. And musically on a SQ drag I tied for first against a guy running 5000w. I basically did a 7th order loaded horn, but using the natural design of the car made it like a horn but with the subs in a ported box. 2 12" blue coned MTX Blue Thunders. Pioneer components on a 50x2 Art Series Precision Power ran off a Clarion head Unit and Clarion electronic crossover. Last I heard a few years ago, no one has beat it yet. I actually want to find the same car and retry with current technology
that was my first amp in 89 or 1990 had bridged on one eminence 15 in a 79 sunbird hatchback it seemed like a monster at the time compared to the power boosters i was used to
Awesome timing! You never fail my friend! 😁❤️ You know we appreciate you and the slick things you do! Crank that puppy up and enjoy your day! 🕺🏻 YOU'RE SUCH A TEASE and I should have read the title better. Loved the outro though!
I think seeing some of these oddities is just as cool as seeing some of the classic and coveted all stars of yesteryear. I have an old school Sherwood amp sitting on a shelf and it is surprisingly well built.
Wow this is cool i rememder these amps when they were out it was 1983 when i first seen mine . I remember installing it an it sound great . This is the second one iv seen ever. Thanks for posting
I bought the 2 channel version of that Rockwood amp brand spanking new from Raynham Flea Market in like 96. I remember it like it was yesterday. I paid $200 for it out the door. I got it home and ran it to a set of Aura 12” subs and the right channel was dead from the start. The guy didn’t want to take it back but I had bought a bunch of stuff off of him at his Fall River MA store over the years. He knew I knew how to run audio and that I’d never buy anything from him again if he didn’t take it. The following weekend I saw it for sale again. He said he fixed it by jumping the left positive speaker lead to the right positive speaker lead on the inside and was selling it at a reduced price. Never bought anything from him after that 🤣
That Blaupunkt amp reminds me of those candy colored Mac computers of the same era. Back when Apple took a chance to try something different and succeeded. :)
Wow!!! I had 2 of those sherwoods😂pretty solid amps.installed many rockwoods🙄thats Blaupunkt is cool af,but that American graffiti 😮😮😮i been in 12v for 40yrs and have never seen one of those,i cant wait to see dyno!!!
The Sherwood is beautiful 😍.... But I think that the blaupunkt should have a surprising performance for its age and size.... I had no idea that any manufacturer used the Tripath chips! They were able to produce high power at lower temperatures.... Good clean sound too! Those two I'm waiting to see how they perform....
I got 3 new in box sherwood dts-x80. Somethin like that. 1/2 din Dobly 5.1 surround decoder for the car. They are super cool but nobody had center channels anymore. I still like mine. At work today i was in a bmw with center channels and it sounded so nice
Looking forward to the Sherwood tests. I had a Sherwood XA-1240Q which did pretty decent on subs for a bargain company in the 90's. My guess is it'll be within 15% of rated power.
Dude I remember someone bringing in one of those big fleamarket amps for me to install. I took the bottom off of it, and the actual amplifier board was like 1/3 the size of the aluminum body, and had a steel plate bolted in the other end to give it some weight 😂
I can't wait to see that Sherwood I have silver Sherwood BP series amps XA-2105BP amps 1 in near mint condition the other is just as good just had an issue with the fuse holder but they both work and running my deck this makes me want to do a video on them if I do in like a week it would be an honor if Big D Wiz checked it out much love from Jersey 💯
sherwood stuff - hifi amps and AV stuff was sold here in the UK by Richer Sounds a long time ago, maybe 10 or 15 years. Made some pretty beefy power amps.
@3:19 - I am using a Kinter K2020A+ Tripath amp for my PC powering a pair of Bose 2.2 vintage speakers. They sound very nice. I am wondering what the chip number is in that amp.
Those American graffiti amps were sold by JR music world if new york. Also mcm audio sold them. I really wish big d would get some Hollywood sound labs stuff. Hollywood and Pyle made most subwoofers for most brands in the 1980s and 90s. Hollywoods excursion subwoofers were way advanced for their day.
This video is worth its weight in gold! I can't wait for the testing! Awesome old school stuff.
I can’t wait for the dyno videos!

Man, I had a Sherwood 70x70 on a pair of Cerwin Vegas and it was loud.
I have 3 brand new in box old Sherwood eqs. Dts-80. Dolby surround 5.1. Super rare cant hardly find info on em but they sound cool.
Same! Had that Sherwood back in 96! bought used of course! :P
The little tube shaped one will be interesting
I cannot wait for the dyno on that Rockwood. I used one of these in 1991. But it was silver and was 300 watts. It bumped my 10's hard.
This is so fun. I have my own personal 80s/90s car/home audio treasures. Hope a time machine gets sent to you next.
I was going to say the same here but when I thought about it I only have a pioneer head unit that I refuse to let go.
My uncle had multiple of these Sherwood amplifiers. He might still have a couple of them. They are what got me into car audio. My uncle doesn't actually know how much he has influenced my life. He is still a major part of my life, but he still doesn't know how much he means to me.
That sherwood AMP looks like an old Jensen. I had back in the day.😅
I stayed till the end ! - What a tease - You are such a Richard !! lol
What a treat that was. Thaoks to Old
School Audio Restorations for the amps for us to enjoy and test. - Surry Virginia
WOW...The Sherwood was my first amp back in 1988. That amp was a beast. Rated for 8 ohm and it ran 4 ohm its entire life trying to Run two MTX Terminator 12's. The giant heatsink would get smoking hot. Love this channel.
I have a SCA-2100. It was my first ever car amp. Proud to still own it and it still works.
Rockwood Detonator was The most powerfullest flee market amp I ever purchased, got it at the San Diego swap meet in 1991.
2:17 These looked so cool. I always wanted one of these when I was a kid.
I had the "400W" version of the Rockwood Detonator back in the day. Roughly 1992-1993 timeframe. The light blue paint would flake off if you ran your fingernail across it, LOL. This video brought back some memories!!
It doesn't matter which you test first, I'll watch them all!
Can't WAIT for the tests on those amps!
We've all seen, had or wanted to buy those!
Be cool too see actually performance especially the Sherwood!!
Man, that's like xmas morning all over again!
Big D I'm droolin over here can't wait to see full vids on each of them! I bet it is going to be interesting getting that cylinder one apart

This pile of amps screams flea market. The tube thing I have never laid eyes on before. Perdy cool.
I'm betting that that Blaupunkt gives that Rockwood a run for it's money.
😂👍

I had a 4 channel rockwood like that but in red. Really looking forward to that.
I had the 4 channel version of that blaupunkt. Worked great. Took it out of that plastic shell, it was sorta like class D, was very cool and never got hot. Worked for years and never had any issues with it. 4x100w @ 4ohm
OOMG Derrick, I had this exact amp back in 1992 in my 1977 Bonneville rocking some 6x9's.
People used to harass me because that is my last name.
I never forget how hard I laughed at my friend who bought a rockwood!!! The market told him it was made by Rockford fosgate😂😂😂
I had both the Rockwood in the video and a Detonator 300. The 300 was a lot better amp that was actually worth the money. Fortunately I didn't give much of anything for the big one.
Those are some really awesome pieces of audio tech!! Can’t wait to see the next video on them!!! It’s like Christmas again!
That Sherwood is a beautiful piece of tech! looks more like a modern, high end home amp than anything automotive!
Santa came early this year!! Congrats on the incredible finds, That Rockwood amp is a beauty!!

I definitely would like to see the Sherwood tested first!
I've always thought that older design was cool looking!
These videos are awesome!!
Rock wood for the win 🥇
Man I loved Sherwood! I had the 200x4 if I remember, or 100x4. I loved it, set records
1st place in my power class with a Sherwood xat-??? (440…?) , massive amp. 140.1 db

Loving that rockwood! Beautiful
Back in 1989 I had that same model Sherwood amp running 2 Petras 15's in the bed of my 1983 Toyota 4x4 with a camper shell. They sounded great!
that was my first amp in 89 or 1990 had bridged on one eminence 15 in a 79 sunbird hatchback it seemed like a monster at the time compared to the power boosters i was used to
These are really cool. You have really got a motley Crue sitting on that table.
Nice new haul. I want to see that Rockwood. The purple is a winner. Looks like the Mobile Authority amps.
Awesome timing! You never fail my friend! 😁❤️ You know we appreciate you and the slick things you do! Crank that puppy up and enjoy your day! 🕺🏻 YOU'RE SUCH A TEASE and I should have read the title better. Loved the outro though!
great show Big D, I look forward to the reviews

I can't wait to see these tested. Great video, as always.
OMG more stuff I drooled over in my teens.
Rockwood! Hell yeah
Those Sherwood amps had a smell all of their own. Best described as 'hot electronics'
In the early 2000s I bought a USA acoustics 100 x 2
That thing rocked
Yeah that American Graffiti amp was really neat. Good video as always
Wow this is cool i rememder these amps when they were out it was 1983 when i first seen mine . I remember installing it an it sound great . This is the second one iv seen ever. Thanks for posting
I had a Sherwood cassette deck in my car back in the late 80s, great gear!
Luvin it!!! Exciting stuff indeed! I vote for the I-Mac Blaupunkt amp : D
What a preview!!!
I'm looking forward to these. Sherwood and T-class definitely got me curious 😮
That Rockwood tease at the end was uncalled for, Big D! :D Excited for that one and the Blaupunkt (because of the Tripath chip.)
I wanna see the layout of the guts on the round one
Wow D!!!... just wow. I rember those sherwoods, Crutchfield I think. can't wait to see the rockwood dyno'd.
I actually had one of those plastic Blaupunkt amps back in the day. For what it was it was a nice lil amp!
That's one awesome lineup. 😎👍👍
I used to have one of those "SPHERE" amplifiers. I totally forgot the name of it but it was such a conversation piece at local Crank It Up meets
70 70. Brings back Memories!!!
I remember those sphere amplifiers. It'll be interesting to see that and the Rockwood.

Hot dann, I had the Sherwood in my car. Actually I had two. They were running Pyle driver 12, lol that brings me back
Can not wait till it go open and see the inside.
Yes thats is all for me.
My very first sub amp was an alpine that the sherwood was a clone of. It was also bridgeable and I used to run four 8” Pyle Driver subs with it.
The Sherwood is beautiful 😍....

Wow I can't wait!!!!

Rockwood 4 life! 200 watts RMS.
Rockwood - haven't heard that name in a while. Have you ever ran across their "partner" Kenford amps? LOL.
Yes I have one but it doesn’t work. American HiFi, Rockwood, Kenford and a few other all under the same brand
Thanks.

Very nice Amps indeed
That Sherwood is cool
That blaupunkt is playing off those differnt color apple computers you could get back in the 00's.
The Rockwood 1000 watt! 😂
Very cool

That Sherwood looked like every amp in JC Whitney back in the day
Rockwood first! King of the flea market amps will output around 600-700rms is my guess. I had a pal that had a big Rockwood and it didn't suck.
That outro was just mean!!😂😂
😝
I had that same amp! wow

My friend had a Rockwood detonator 600? Watts in late 80's. It was like 20" long opened it up and the board was about the size of a credit card.
I wanna see that rockwood....knew somone had a large rockwood on two cerwin vega 12's in a hatchback an it beat pretty good for back in 1994
See the Rockwood AMP-1245x
