More like arrived at them haha. The hyper expensive stuff has mostly always been solid but In the 90s cold steel under 200 was basically junk, just standard mall ninja crap with slightly better metal than their Chinesium competition. Maybe I just had particularly bad luck but I recall the grinds being god awful. Their improvement from like the mid 2000s on have been super impressive, all the sudden we have great axes and tomahawks even in their budget lines. Can't really comment on the knives unfortunately, I should probably give them a try, but it's incredibly difficult to beat Morakniv or Opinel in the budget market and I would rather buy from a private blacksmith if i'm going expensive.

Proof that a knife doesn't need to be fancy to be good.
Edit: I get it. It's really really good steel. What I mean by "fancy" is that there is no saw, no compass, no "mall ninja" accessories. It's a simple blade, and that's all it means to be.

I used to work at a gun store and a Cold Steel rep called us up one time to try to get their products in the store. I was in no position to make a call like that, but the rep was insistent on sending me whatever knife I wanted from their catalog. He literally just let me take my pick. I got a Recon 1 with a serrated blade, but he sent an extra one without the serrated edge "just in case". I gave the non-serrated one to another worker, and still carry that knife to this day. Probably 10+ years old. You could shave with it right out of the box. I tried to put in a good word with the product manager, but I don't know if they ever talked. It's a great knife, and their customer service was top notch

Cut heavy corrugated cardboard with it to test edge retention. Chopping qood isn't the best measure of edge retention as high impact resistance doesn't always correlate with high edge retention!!!

I have been carrying the old school AK-47 folder. This is the one with the thick aluminum handle non-painted blade and the old I believe it was called trilock system. Anyway I have one that is 23 years old that I still carry every single day now the blade has worn down from 20 years of sharpening but it digs in soil scraped coating off a steel pipe as I am a gas line inspector. Unbelievable knives and I also have the cheaper version of this SRK that is always on my motorcycle along with all of my machetes are the two handled cold steel and I also have a 15-year-old cold steel hatchet that also stays on my motorcycle at all times.
Every go bag has a cold steel product in it.

Cold steel likes to market how far they can bend their knives without it staying bent. Not surprised by this. They do tend use a harder steel in some knives than others so sharpening can be a pain.

I’m pretty sure my dad has the 1st gen of a knife similar to this one; if I can find it and resharpen it (I remember it being sharp as a brick) I’ll prolly start carrying it
Update: I found it, sharpened it, started using it for firewood, kindling, and as a multitool (if I couldn’t do it with my hands I’d reach for the knife) and it didn’t even lose it’s edge when I used it to cut into a tube with metal wires in it. I haven’t had a ton of knives, but considering you can still get a damn near identical knife for like $70 is crazy. Get one

It’s funny when people see someone stress a knife to break and complain
“That’s unrealistic, no knife can do that”
Then a good knife goes through the same exact process and has no issue
Proof that a good knife is the difference, and not the expectations

You should do "the minimalist" knife. I believe CRKT is the name of the company who makes it. It's definetly a cheaper knife. I've had one for going on 4 years know. Obviously light usage on my ended, but would love to see how one holds up.

It doesn't get any better value at any steel they offer... you can pay ALOT more money for a Fallkniven but the extra value you get isn't worth the cost. SRK is the best value for a woods blade. Pick up a high carbon steel heavy blade like a trailmaster or a puzon wilderness bowie plus a nice quality mora knife you have every cutting tool you need other than a machete and hatchet.
