I came to love it just because of Higurashi, I watched the anime when I was young and play the visual novels games right now. The sound is fascinating and calming me in my very core. I'm dreaming of a dry summer night, walking threw a fantasy like forrest in japan in midsummer. This sound is touching something inside of me, and i wonder what it could be...could be? Hauuuu

If you don't want to, it's okay, I'm just curious. It impacts and influenced me too, especially after I played the VN and in the answer arcs there's a "session" with the author himself, I love those sessions.

i've lived in Spain for a long time now and the cicadas here sound almost the same, although they don't usually make It to the higher pitched notes i must say, still, they're quite pleasant to listen in the monotonous summers, as the chinese said about them they're noble insects who feed on dew, don't cause harm and devote their life to singing, quite an ideal if you ask me
These are known as Tanna japonensis, or evening cicadas. Here is a wikipedia article about them: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanna_japonensis It says they can be found all over the island of Japan and even Taiwan. They prefer certain types of trees, and my guess is you'd hear more of these in rural areas in Japan.

One thing that I find odd is that we have cicadas here, but they make like a whining sound that rises and falls in pitch, but I never hear them making this "squeaky gate" sound you hear in Japan. Different types, I wonder?
