This is the type of vehicle I had to recon, smashed to hell, badly welded back together and all sorts of ghetto repairs. Dealing with those vehicles really pushes your diagnostic and repair skills.
Sorry that you had to deal with these types of vehicles. That front end repair also looks terrible - vehicle probably has all types of alignment issues going on.
@@maltnz definitely my man, I would try to get that vehicle to factory ride height and dial in the alignment if at all the subframe hasn't shifted too badly.
Also check if the alternator has a one-way clutch in its pulley. Had a belt chirp that sounded similar and it was worse with the A/C on or with heavy steering load. The alt pulley had locked up solid instead of slipping one way and that was the culprit as it was causing inconsistent belt tension.
Rescuing that front end wreck "repaired" car could still make a good "Buyer Beware!" video that will resonate with viewers. $$$$ required as parts are rare and hours to fix it will start out undeterminable. Hope whoever bought it got an actual deal.
I had an 04 STI. It was stolen; found it in Newark, NJ, the stolen car capitol of the USA. It wasn't crashed but needed $10,000 in repairs. They were probably going to strip it for parts. Still had the thieves' wheel lock on it so no other thieves steal it. What a mess. FWIW, CARFAX on this particular car came up clean. Yeh, I couldn't believe it either.
I have a 2003 lancer oz rally so I speak from experience when I say that I hope you're able to find parts if you need them. They're great cars and easy enough to maintain so people hold on to them forever or until they crash them. Mitsubishi went out of business so oem parts are expensive/hard to find and IF you find one in a junk yard they tend to be wrecked. I needed 2 of the 3 pieces for my intake, the intake horn and the back half of the filter box. Just the oem intake horn was almost $200. The one half of the box was almost $300. Granted, my car is 20yo

behind the tire is the AYC pump. Fun fact. Mitsubishi didn't think about cold temperatures so anything below - 20c will freeze the fluids in the pump. Cause it to shut off. Making you lose some awd functions.
Never saw a Mistybitchy I liked yet ! The majority of which are usually dead on the side of the highway. Believe me I tried to like them as I worked on the plant air compressors in Illinois quite often. Even the maintenance crew that worked at Mistybitchy wouldn't buy them.

those dif lines go to the ayc pump for lsd traction and snow modes for best traction. also all evo 10s have fog lights so either the plug is hiden or its been cut
First impression diagnostic videos like this are fun. 👍 I say rear tires were originally on the front, that is why the tread is cut. No wiring for fog lights, perhaps the replacement front end came with the lights but the car did not have them originally. I say the likelihood of future videos on this one is dependent extent of problems. I'm betting this was purchased by a flipper at auction, eyes wide open, not a consumer. We'll see.
Those things were hell on wheels back in the day but now there’s a dozen cars that would surpass them. Most were beat to death or crashed. There’s a bunch of YT videos of them racing down snow cover mountains or doing 4 wheel drifting.
@@darekm6859 OK, now I understand your question. Well, just off hand you could look at the recently discontinued Subaru WRX STI or the VW Golf R, Audi S3, Civic typeR or even the Cadillac CT4-V. My brother has a 2010 Evo with only about 70k on the clock and it’s bone stock. It’s a fast little car. I just hate seeing how much parts are when it comes time to replace something. Those $$ signs just keep rolling when it’s time to work on it. It is a pain in the butt to replace the running/parking lights if you have big Sasquatch hands like me. I had a terrible time replacing the amber parking light bulb on the driver’s side. You have to take the air filter box out before even thinking about.
Even the big ones have clearance problems, had to remove the airbox on my 2009 Silverado to change a bulb. The drivers side had the washer fluid tank in the way as I recall. I have huge hands (3X) perhaps smaller hands could have done it.
Evos can often require specialist knowledge. Draining the rear diff / ayc system then it needs bled using software. For your sake I’d leave it to a specialist Mitsi guy to save yourself the hassle. They can be a nitemare. I only say this as I’ve owned about 6 of them (all models including an evo X) since 1999. The hangars can go weak for the prop shaft. Good luck with it but I’ll be watching with interest. 👍 happy new year 🎉
Considering these had one of the highest total count of airbags of any car of the era (even had a knee airbag for the driver) it’s a pretty sad state that only a few aren’t fault coding….. Ray is on the money - the harder he looked, the more he found to support his suspicions.
there should be 2 adjustments on the headlights. One for height and one for left to right. Either it's a 7mm(?) Hex Key or a small cog wheel which you turn with a Philips head screwdriver. But you need a headlight alignment machine to get it correct. And since this car's headlight is below 100cm the alignment is preferred to be between 5-25cm over 10m. For the fog lights the adjustment is though the small hole in the front. =)
There will be an adjustment for up and down and left and right. To adjust the lights properly you need to be parked on a flat surface and it’s best for it too be night time with no other lights around so find an area to park the car where it’s completely dark. Now you’ll need a tape measure this helps you adjust the light to be up to about 30 to 40 inches any lower you won’t see anything on the road any higher your blinding people. With the high beams on you want 35 to 45 inches. Now that’s hight now between the two light patterns you want the gap to be about 3 feet so 36 inches any less the lights will be shining into each other anymore they will be shinning too far out to the sides. I can’t stress how important it is too take the time and adjust your headlights so many people don’t do this and the lights are just all over the place
One of my peeves when driving during the winter is cars behind with headlights too high. Time and again I have to dip my mirror. They don't seem to realise that if they're illuminating the back of the driver's head, the lights are too high! Once, I dipped my mirror to signal to a van following and he didn't get the message, so I adjusted my mirror so his lights shone right back at him. His answer was to overtake like a lunatic and try to run me off the road.
@@terencejay8845 Yeah, a lot of people are just pricks. Riding someone's ass with a jacked up truck and LED lights does not a cool person make, but it does often make for a dead person.
I recall seeing what I believe was the AWD turbo Lancer at the Toronto Auto Show back in early 2000s. What shocked me was the sticker: just over 50K (before shipping and taxes)!!!! As for this model some lengthy repairs will be needed soon. A shame that the buyer Failed to Inspect First!!
The lash adjusters are making the noise, they are a common failure point due to having a small oil inlet. Best practice is to replace all 16. I own and drive 2 evos.
If you do fluids for this do NOT use aftermarket clutch fluid. Has to be OEM diaqueen of imported Castrol dctf fluid. The mechatronics parts will grenade themself. As another commenter states those lines are for the ayc pump. Flat out don't touch it. Make sure you just drain the diff the fluid in the actual ayc pretty much never needs a change and has to be bled in a funky way when drained. The lean code is probably the exhaust mani. I'd bet money it's stock with a huge ass crack in it.
This is what happens usually, young rich kid gets a fancy new toy for college from parents, said kid totals it after modding the poor car to death, insurance sells it to copart, copart sells to shady used car dealer, shady dealer does even shadier repairs and sells it to the next sucker that walks in the door. I don't believe so. Ray had the borrowed A/C machine which means the video is a few weeks old. The car has either been sitting outside all this time, or is gone. The biggest problem with all 3 is you can get them for a decent price, they perform well in their sectors especially the evo and sti. The aftermarket support is massive, and they are popular. So what happens is some wannabee gets it, beats on it, doesn't take care of it. Doesn't have the money to fix it when things break and then passes the problems on. I bought an evo X with 85k on the clock with a new engine, trans, tcase, and axles, turbo (5k since overhaul) for $20k I had to do (clutch, shocks, tie rods, endlinks, fix 4 boost leaks, 2 vacuum leaks, fix a fuel pressure issue, some bodywork, new accessory pulleys, new diff mounts, new oilcooler, bleed ayc/acd, new fluids, new shift bushings, new speed sensor front left, and lastly new front brake lines [the donut that owned it previously routed them wrong] ) Oh and Insurance now values her at 35k (my insurance takes the nearly fully new drivetrain into account) That's what happens when it is beat on and owned by a kid who doesn't understand maintenence is necessary and has to go broke trying to fix it. Now I'm a happy evo owner lol and got a good deal. Oh and yes I do all of my own work and have all of the nice tools to make life easy doesn't even want to think about the cost of a pro handling the repairs.
Thank you for including footage of the wall! I'm just here for the wall. I like the wall... ;) Seriously though, what in the actual heck? This car is a disaster. I deal with accident vehicles all day, and this immediately triggered my "run away" response. Good luck, Ray!
Owner of a modded WRX here, buddy of mine is many thousands deep on his second-hand evo. In my experience, people who own and mod these cars NEVER sell them if they like them, not if they can help it. ALWAYS ask why the owner is selling would be my main piece of advice, then compare what they say to the status of the car. If anything doesn't line up, walk away. If they took mods off before selling, RUN away. You can find good examples of these, and both the WRX and the EVO are fun cars that I think everyone should experience at least once, but the ones worth buying are unicorns and it's very easy to end up with one like this with tons of pitfalls and hidden issues.

Love the channel, daily watcher just a few counties north in Tampa/NPR. . . However, that device is NOT what makes the compressor surge noise on a turbo gas car, in fact the blow off valve is designed to prevent it, if you've got one installed and still hear the noise after 3-4psi of boost then it isn't functioning as intended. . . Which isn't a big deal because myself and thousands of others actually prefer to not run one because of both the sound and the throttle response. Just thought I'd put my half cent in 👍🏻
The fog lights not having wires to go to them is the hilarious piece. I wonder if it was a starter project that was not complete. Because who wants to mess up wiring.
Definitely recommend a full fluid change service if possible with OEM Mitsubishi oils for the diff and transmission. I've had my 06 Evo for 12 years and always maintained it with oem fluids and has given me no problems and no weird noises. Surprised that HKS bov is venting to atmosphere, and not plummed back on to intake pipe. Possible tuned to vent.

It is pretty though...a sh*tbox...no...but it appears to be a rolling piece of misery. It will be interesting to see how this one turns out. Hopefully theres another video about this car. An airbag light indicates any fault in the airbag system. There are many possible faults. I had one recently in my VW Golf. I used to work for used car dealer that has a location in your area, won't name them here directly, but they love the color purple.

Also check if the alternator has a one-way clutch in its pulley. Had a belt chirp that sounded similar and it was worse with the A/C on or with heavy steering load. The alt pulley had locked up solid instead of slipping one way and that was the culprit as it was causing inconsistent belt tension.
The best thing about the car is the interior blue light. This car has more issues than the local newspaper.
Rescuing that front end wreck "repaired" car could still make a good "Buyer Beware!" video that will resonate with viewers. $$$$ required as parts are rare and hours to fix it will start out undeterminable. Hope whoever bought it got an actual deal.
Ray I'm thinking like you. It's a rebuilt wreck , and the airbags went off and they never replaced them. The low miles and abuse would scare me. 😱 🤔
Somebody bought a used modified EVO without a pre-inspection? This sounds like a life lesson in the making.
Right up there with "Hey y'all, watch this!" is "I got a really sweet deal on this at the auction!"
About like buying a used SRT-4 with a stage 3 kit. Have fun with that...
Mitsubishi pulled out of Europe but they are very much alive and well here in New Zealand.
They are still alive here in the US... although looking at their lineup I'm not sure why.

Since the cats are missing off that 2015 Evo need to put a disclaimer in your invoice for that customer. EVOs and STis, everyone thinks it's a Rally Car, but it still needs about $10k more in work to even try. Can't wait to see how many videos this takes to "work"
Other than having to skip past the spoilers at the beginning, great video. Looks like there is much that needs attention on the Lancer.
That Lancer is like Hollywood, CA. All shiny and smooth on the outside. But lurking just below the surface, a complete and utterly chaotic $hitshow of cheesy repairs, rot and rough wear and tear...
Yikes! Money pit!! 👍
I bet vehcor would have a good laugh at the quality of that front end repair!
those dif lines go to the ayc pump for lsd traction and snow modes for best traction. also all evo 10s have fog lights so either the plug is hiden or its been cut
The water hose clamps on the silicone couplings really sells it for me... The previous owner loved this car 😂 poor Evo.
Thank you for us watching. Back at ya. Thank you for a great video.
Love your approach to diagnosing a vehicle. My bet is that this one is going to turn into a slew of issues!
Definitely
First impression diagnostic videos like this are fun. 👍
I say rear tires were originally on the front, that is why the tread is cut.

I would google the VIN number. You'll probably find the auction pictures that show the damage. Looks like a coble job.
Nice to see you are getting a variety of cars to work on !
Great diversity of cars on the channel. The ride height repair on the Benz was really good. This one was even more interesting. Never know what we're going to see next.
I have huge hands (3X) perhaps smaller hands could have done it.
never ceases to amaze me that people will buy these kinds of wrecks and THEN get inspections. hope he got this really cheap. what a hunk of crap.

Rust on repair points on the body? That doesn’t sound good to me.

My god, i would try to return that car. What a nightmare. Thanks Ray.
👍 happy new year 🎉
Cant wait for the next episode. I think you could count the number of functional airbags on the fingers of one foot! And do the seatbelts work at all?
Considering these had one of the highest total count of airbags of any car of the era (even had a knee airbag for the driver) it’s a pretty sad state that only a few aren’t fault coding….. Ray is on the money - the harder he looked, the more he found to support his suspicions.
Happy New Year Ray and Family.
there should be 2 adjustments on the headlights. =)
As the foglights don't even have wire to be functional i assume you're already done....

I don't believe so. Ray had the borrowed A/C machine which means the video is a few weeks old. The car has either been sitting outside all this time, or is gone.
I hope the buyer didn't pay too much for the car. "Fixing" it will cost an absolute fortune, and it will never truly be fixed. Maybe the best thing for it is to sell it for parts.
Nice car to bad it was crashed, probably has no air bags that is why all the bag lights and codes are on. But it was probably a nice car at one time. Boy you have a lot of work to do on that thing should the owner want you to fix it, but you can do it Ray, yes you can. Awesome job as usual.

@@cigarsgunsanddiesel8032 WRX/STI's have a nasty habit of consuming head gaskets.
I don't know if there is a more beat on and molested car out there... They're all modified.

You have to be really careful with used Evos and WRXes. As soon as he popped the hood on this I said "oh no" out loud involuntarily.
I had a coworker who loathed and avoided working on WRX's because of that and how WRX Owners who take their cars to the shop are :p
Buying a used, modified anything usually leads to a grab-bag of problems. Should have been a red flag when the suspension mods were noticed.

Just thought I'd put my half cent in 👍🏻
I bet most of its problems are traced back to that crash. Video is good enough just way on the short side .
The fog lights not having wires to go to them is the hilarious piece. I wonder if it was a starter project that was not complete. Because who wants to mess up wiring.
I bet the car did not have fog lights originally but the salvage front end did... just guessing.
