  • In this video I will be disassembling a LED Headlamp from a 2017 Mercedes Benz C class.
    I will show you where the internal screws are and how to take the headlight apart to get out the projector, high beam reflector, and wire harness.
    The plastic bezel inside of the light squeaks quite a bit while it's being removed. I apologize for the noise, but there's not much that I can do about it as that's what it sounds like.

    Great video , I was just wondering if there’s a way to open up the backing and change out the headlights without tearing the whole lens apart ?

    • @gftgrill
      @gftgrill  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The lens has to come off to get access to all of the screws inside of the light. You might be able to cut holes on the housing, but then you would have to reseal those holes somehow. Removing the lens is the cleanest way that I know of to get access to the inside

  • @mfdoom808

    Hi, my right sidemarker LED stopped working. Would it be possible to take the headlight housing apart and only replace the faulty component?

    • @gftgrill
      @gftgrill  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it would be possible, but you would need one from a donor headlight. Generally it's easier to buy a new headlight and do the whole light swap than try to disassemble 2 headlights and swap the parts and then reseal and reinstall. The question is how much can you get a different light for vs how much is your time worth.

    Hi,
    Is there a possibility the signal indicator could be changed?

    • @gftgrill
      @gftgrill  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you look here: th-cam.com/video/K1hZDdpLwec/w-d-xo.html
      That is the turn signal LED. it's a small circuit board on the heat sink. You can replace that unit as a whole, but if you wanted to change it to something custom, that's going to require finding one that meets the same specs with a different color or you have to modify the existing PCB yourself.

    Is the ballast under the headlight? Can I access the ballast behind the front wheel without taking the wheel off. Also with a new ballast will it have to be programmed? I’m asking some reviews on and some say it was plug and play.

    • @gftgrill
      @gftgrill  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes it is underneath. I don't know if you'll be able to access it without taking the light out.
      Mercedes says you need to reprogram the light when you change the ballast, headlight, or vehicle. If it works without reprogramming, you will run the risk of damaging the LEDs.

      @@gftgrill appreciate the info. From now the previous generation you could take the wheel off and the plastic under the wheel well and access it. Just doesn’t seem like you’ll be able to get it at the angle its at I saw it the other day(it’s a friend car) unless there’s plastic to access the bulb or underneath the front to do a fog light or something with some extensions

    • @gftgrill

      Yes, it could be a controller or fuse. you should be able to swap the ballast from left to right to see if the failure travels with the ballast.

    My headlight is working but lens is cracked, is there any way that i can just fix or change that cracked part (lens) ? Thanks

    • @gftgrill
      @gftgrill  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll have to find another headlight and remove the lens, then remove yours and do the swap. You have to be careful to correctly reseal your light to avoid moisture and condensation problems. For most people it's easier to just replace the whole headlight and be done. 30 minutes to replace whole light vs 2 to 5 hours to do the lens swap.

    Hi, How long do you put it in the oven to take the lens off, thanks

    • @gftgrill
      @gftgrill  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "it depends" not all ovens are the same. it's best to start at 15-20 minutes and work your way up from there. you most likely will need to put it in the oven more than once and you don't want to over heat it in and melt the plastic. IMO, baking headlights is more of an art than a science.

    • @gftgrill
      @gftgrill  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      While that's not uncommon, they probably didn't reseal the lens correctly and you would need to pull the lens off again and apply a new liquid seal.

    hi, do you need to code those type of headlight? i want to buy and mount them but idk if i need to code them?

    • @DrAcid12
      @DrAcid12 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alina Serbu yes you have to code them. Only Mercedes can do that. The module that’s behind the LED light needs coding. The LED module burns out sometimes and that module is £220 alone. If the actual LED light burns out you have to change the whole headlight on my 2013 SL it was £1079. Cross your self and walk away from these lights in fact head for the hills and run there not worth it.

    • @gftgrill
      @gftgrill  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. the seal just needs to be popped off (carefully). It is meant to be replaced if worn or damaged and has a part number specific to the seal.

    My boyfriend broke his C200 Cabriolet right headlight due to a minor accident. A day after, the auto light stopped working on the right one, and full beam on the LEFT headlight stopped working as well, even though there’s no damage on the left side. Any idea if both headlights should be changed or just 1?

    • @gftgrill
      @gftgrill  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That issue is going to require hands-on diagnosis. there could be a bad fuse/relay, you could have damaged the wire harness. the left side light could have been damaged from the shock of the impact.
