- It's all about the bait! In this video we take you offshore after dark in South Florida in pursuit of the Big Eye Scad, aka the Goggle Eye! Goggle Eye are one of the most prized baitfish in South Florida and all over the world. They can also be very elusive and drive you crazy trying to catch them if you don't know the basics!
Goggle Eye are typically caught after dark and in the early morning hours just before sunrise. They can be found anywhere from 10 feet of water out to several hundred feet of water. Typically they are found out deeper, 150 to 400 feet, in the evening hours and move into shallower depths as the morning hours approach.
Moon phase, tide, and current are all factors that contribute to how the bait feed and when they feed. In the early morning hours, 5am to sunrise, they can often be caught in shallower depths around inlets and other shallow water structure.
Make sure you carry plenty of bait rigs for the occasional cutoff or birds nest that wrecks your rig. Hayabusa makes one of the most popular rigs for goggle eye fishing. The rig is a D119 and hook size is #15. Other manufacturers like Offshore Angler and R&R Tackle make a similar rigs that work well too. Recommended weight sizes vary from 16 to 32 ounces. Enjoy the video and feel free to comment if you have any questions!

Why you use big sinker?
Fantastic and informative video
Have things changed from when I used to go out of Hillsborough inlet and got gogs? We used to just hit the inlet buoy markers at 4 am until sunup and put a ton in the live well. Of course I’m talking ‘89-‘92. I’m in Stuart now.
Great video guys

Awesome video!
are there any areas that should hold goggs?? by a beach? inlet? offshore?
I know this is late but do the goggle eye like to stay in one area? Is it best to mark the spot and make passes when they stop biting or drift when found until the bite dies down?
Do you know someone I can get live bait from in W palm?
Having a hard time finding a conventional 10-12 ft rod for this rig. If anyone knows of any let me know 🤙🏼
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
How does this guy only have 800 subs?
😎😎😎
Now I know how to properly stow the rig afterwards. Thanks
